  1. Sure on Do LUGs Still Matter? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The Central PA LUG is still going strong. I have only been a member for about 3 years, and it has changed a lot in that time. However, it is still a relevent club. There are more new users then ever before (mostly, I assume, related to the lower barrier for entry and growing popularity). Those users still want help with networking and installation etc. The other reason I believe that our LUG has remained active though is that the guy who runs the show is a die hard. For a LUG to remain strong it takes a leader who really wants to make it a success.

    I'll own some of that.

I have railed against religion (though not here). And yes. It's because I am scared. I hear things like "ID" and Prayer In Schools, and "reversing Roe v Wade"...and well yeah. That scares the shit out of me. It's a threat to the things I hold dear. Science, Seperation of Church and State, and freedom from an invasion of privacy.

So to say that I shouldn't be afraid of what one believes, is pretty naive.

  4. Doesn't matter on Learning Java or C# as a Next Language? · · Score: 1

Really it doesn't. I have used both (on linux), but get paid to use Java. They are similar languages. The object (as was once told to me) it to learn to think in code. Every language I have ever used has given me tools that extrapolate across all languages. As far as being in school goes...listen to the other posters who are saying "pick the one with the better teacher". All things being equal, being a Linux man, I would go with Java.

  6. Re:Other than creating free software . . . on Innovation Happens Elsewhere · · Score: 2, Insightful

Other posters have given more than enough examples. I will add that there is a lot of imitation in software, both in the closed source world and the OSS world. This isn't always because someone is trying to play catch-up with a great innovation. It is also often related to (in the case of OSS appearing to play catch up) because there is a proprietary piece of software out there, that has become pretty critical to a business and the OSS community wants to be able to replace it for them (think exchange, who's shared calendering is often pointed to as a reason for not going OSS). Or in other situations where you have to be able to interact with the closed source world (hence the resources spent in developing Open Office, so I can read the .doc .xls that was sent to me, the NTFS drivers, Samba, etc). So yeah there is a lot of so called catch up at times, but it's mostly because we have to start from scratch to emulate or interact with a piece of software that we can't just look at the code or spec to see how it works.

  7. I gotta say on Google Acquires 5% of AOL · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have been giving AOL a lot of thought lately. And I really think there is something to the 'Value-Add' market for broad band. I think there is a real market for a company to come along and offer services that augment the highspeed "experience". If AOL does it right, they could still be a viable business once the dialup world has coughed it's last spasms.

Well what you said is sure to be unpopular. However I have to agree. The problem with indirect democracy is that the folks who get elected think that the constituents no longer matter after the election. However, the point of indirect democracy is that "we can't all be consulted on every detail, so send this guy up there to speak for us". I am pretty convinced that a majority of us would have said "no" to being spied on is such a manner. Therefore, it follows that this person did something against (if you agree to my premise that we would have said no) the public. And the public should be pissed.

I am not defending past presidents with this, but c'mon. Clinton gets a hummer and we want to impeach him...Bush treats us like criminals and nothing happens?!?

I still submit that if the leader of the free world can't get a hummer from a fat chick, then wtf would anyone do it? :)
