Yeah I am not sure either, but I think they will be. The trend is already starting among most geeks I know, the trend will likely follow to the rest of the population as notebooks become more and more affordable.
For the first time ever (in my computing life), I don't own a desktop. I sold it. I never touched it. I am never without a PC, but it happens to be a laptop. We'll see I suppose, no one can predict the future, but my guess would be that desktops will fall out of favor for all but the very lowend market.
congrats, you got idiot mods to agree with you. I was simply pointing out that the OP was saying that we wouldn't be paying for it if they had insurance, which was and still is inaccurate.
Nah, I put ubuntu on my GF's laptop about a year ago. While on the phone one night after not having seen her for a while I had her open a terminal (she had never done this before). sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. She didn't have any problems. If most non technical users hadn't been "raised" on icons and clicky clicky, the terminal is an extreamly simple interface, they wouldn't be afraid of it.
It's called Repetative Stress Injury for a reason. Just cut it out!
Seriously though, a lot of RSI's come from performing the same task over and over again in the same position (stop it dirty minds!). Vary the activity, take breaks. The problem is aptly named...try to remember that.
Everybody here bitches day in and day out..."These businesses need models that are adapted to new technology"...then someone tries to come up with something and everyone bitches about how dumb it is. *sigh*
I think I speak for all of us when I say...

nah, they don't need it. Install apache and show them how to create html docs...that ought to keep 'em busy for a while...at least until they see some ajax site at a friends house...then the fun begins!
The PVR part is nice. I have a myth box and use it all the time. I would never have bothered with clunky vcr tapes and the bad UI on a vcr, but with mythweb I can schedule everything I may want to watch and then watch it when it's convienient to me. And I don't know, I don't really listen to music so I don't do much with that. The cd's I do have are all ripped to the server upstairs and I can mount them over samba and listen at the laptop if I am in the mood.
Bullshit. I got knocked around all over hells half acre as a kid, and when I started kicking in heads I got left alone. I hated who I was for a while, because anger like that is hard to turn off (though I have now). But bullies, kids who tried to put cigarettes out on me, hit me with two by fours and destroy my property were everywhere for a while. I only got peace after I fucked a few of them up (of course a good growth sport as well as a giant dose of teenage anger helped). Yes I did get the 4 friends treatment a few times, but they can't always be in groups.
Yeah. I mean I understand your reluctance to embrace a tech that was able to be accomplished before (though I might suggest that using hidden iframes was a bit less elegant). However, what do we care about hype. I let it roll off me. I like using the XMLHttpRequest object...and you can get creative in your web apps with it. To be honest, I think most devs just opted for a page reload most of the time before all these libs and such came around. So in terms of "something new"...well it is new in the regard that we are seeing an explosion of web apps using it as decent way to give some of the features that fat client devs take for granted.
Yeah I agree. I get sick of everyone bashing what other people are doing online. Get over it. If people want to use blog software to keep diary, who the fuck cares. As for the google part. I am not sure. I mean I almost never run across a blog that is totally irrelevant. Of course I don't search for "Great curtains and toast" so I suppose that most of the diary blogs out there just don't show up in the results.
Yeah, those 10 people are bastards!

Dude...I am a little concerned about your deep knowledge of Romance Novels.

uh, health insurance means that society would be footing the bill.

While I don't have experience with that machine...I will point you to DistroWatch. Gotta be something there that will work.
Good luckSo as you can see, H&R block did nothing wrong. Nothing to see here.

HTF does that translate to having a windows frontend

This isn't about a rendering engine?

eh, I don't know. I am fine with it
I agree and I don't. The spirit of your argument is correct, but I have hit the submit button and then realized a mistake got past m
But I always called it beer.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was troubleshooting an XML file so I could persist my data.
Despite the nay sayers below, I have done Perl, PHP and Java for web services...Java takes A LOT more code to do the same thing. So, I agree :)
Having used C# (under linux using mono tools) and getting paid to write Java, I can tell you have no idea what you are talking about.

Ahh yes...sitting around strumming the fish.
