  1. Brightness & Contrast Ratio on Monitor Basics - LCD vs. CRT · · Score: 1
    Brightness:
I don't have numbers to back it up, but every CRT I have seen has been remarkably brighter than most LCD's. The only LCD's I have seen that could match a CRT are some of the new Sony's that are almost too bright.

    Contrast Ratio:
The article mentioned something about CRT's only having a contrast ratio of 700:1. I was reading last week, and came across something that pegged a CRT's contrast ratio in the thousands to one, not hundreds to one.

Those are my biggest gripes about this article, but I agree with most what else they had to say.

It is called an RTO, or "Rejected Take-Off". You slam on the brakes, turn on the thrust reversers, lower the flaps, raise the airbrakes...basically anything you can do to get the plane to slow down. I just saw some pictures yesterday of an A340 that had done this. ALL the tires had been blown out, one of the landing gears was actually ripped partway out, and even a few of the wheels hubs had seperated from the landing gear and were barely hanging on. It's not pretty, but you are safe.

  7. Re:Tires? on Spirit Rover is One Year Old · · Score: 1

The thing is, there are no "tires" on these rovers, just wheels. The wheels were carved out of solid chunks of aluminum, with treads machined into the aluminum. There is no rubber whatsoever for these wheels. As you can imagine, trying to drive a car on wheels like that would not give you much traction at all, especially at the speeds that cars drive at. These rovers have been on mars now for a year, and they have moved something like 2 miles each, if I recall correctly.

You are in part paying for the art of the design of the hardware. The functionality is different. It's there, but it may not be what you are thinking. It's simple, but not dumb.
