Horrifically offtopic, but why not. I'd have to say that, yes, it appears to be common to be able to build mental images. However, I have the odd problem that they're not internally consistent and that I can't focus on them- if I have an image in my mind, I can only hold on to it if I don't concentrate on it. Otherwise, it sorta slips away. It's hard to explain, but I'm sure someone else here will recognize it. Any takers?
This doesn't really answer your question, so I'll just say that "holding pictures" is technically accurate, but not that great.
Really, we're having one of hashest winters in the recent X years...
Are you kidding? We're having one of the mildest winters ever here. It was around 50 degrees a couple days ago, and I'm in Rochester, New York. Today is one of the first days this year when we got snow that stayed, and we normally get somewhere around 10 feet annually.
I've heard that it has a new security feature. When you break in, it says, "Congratulations, you're now an AOL user". It's the only security software with a 100% success rate...
Captcha doesn't stop them, either. They figured out that the secret is to copy the captcha and instructions, then use them on a porn site. People wanting to see the porn solve the captcha to get in. It's a really simple solution, and I don't see an effective countermeasure.
As much as the content providers would want to pull a stunt like that, it just won't work out in the long run. There's just too many companies that have a significant online presence for this to ever work. Google has already announced that they don't want to pay, and their recent track record indicates that they'd fight it in court if necessary. I'd think that they'd have a good case- after all, the consumers bought an unlimited connection to the Internet, not a connection to websites that could afford to bribe ISPs.
What's Microsoft's stance on this? They're probably the most influential party that's potentially interested.
Actually, it's a case of the rare Aquatic Backhoe. No pictures of it are known to exist, but it has terrorized undersea cables for centuries. Scientists are currently attempting to create traps baited with lengths of assorted cable, but still have had no luck.
It is my understanding that Vista will have extensive digital rights management (DRM) capabilities, the primary purpose of which is to prevent users from manipulating files in unwanted means, i.e. copying a movie. I am concerned that these capabilities could be exploited by viruses, worms, spyware, rootkits, and the like. Clearly, all such software would greatly benefit from the capability to restrict user capabilities; it could become nearly impossible to remove. How do you plan to have effective DRM tools without giving writers of malicious software such an advantage?
I think he has a bit of pull with one of the Editor's...
He seems to have a lot more than a bit. I've been doing a bit of research, and it turns out that, not only does every story he submits gets accepted, he gets a large amount of advertising revenue thanks to this site! It's rediculous! Not only that, he has so much influence here that he somehow managed to get a single-digit UID. One wonders how much he pays the editors to get away with this...
In vaccuum, you would die rather violently, due to shortage of air....
Does anyone have any links to reliable data about what happens to unprotected humans in a vaccuum? I'm curious and having a hard time finding anything reasonable accurate
Nuclear power plants make ideal terrorist targets.
Are you kidding? Nuclear power plants are essentially worthless as targets. There's only 2 things I can imagine terrorists would want with them. The first is to destroy it in the hopes that it will release a giant radioactive plume. This is incredibly hard; I believe that the plants are specifically designed to survive a direct impact by a 747. The other method is the massively overhyped "dirty bomb". Most estimates I've seen indicate that yes, this could irradiate some area, but it wouldn't be much larger than a city block.
Electricity is not a scarce resource! All we need to do is use nuclear power, or build that giant solar array that keeps getting proposed, or some other method I don't know about and we've got all we can ever use. Sure, people tend to dislike nuclear because of the whole waste issue, but we can solve most of that problem by using breeder reactors, and significant disasters are impossible if we use modern designs.
You forget about botnets. If I'm not mistaken, some nets have as many as 50,000 machines, and many are supposedly rented out to spammers. If each machine is told "send spam", it will probably take longer, but it will still allow huge batches to be sent out with ease. Sure, you could make it take half an hour to send a message, but then mailing lists will die out (and the spammers will still have the upper hand anyways).
Nice try, but it just won't work as well as one would hope.
Because then people can just make a new account whenever their poster karma runs out. If you then decide to solve that by giving new users lower karma or something, then you block a large portion of the potential submitters. If not, then abusers can just get a new account. Either way, it doesn't work out.
Isn't there greasemonkey script to allow you to collapse an entire thread? Too lazy to look for it, but I could have sworn it was one of the first out there.
I went to what is probably one of the last experimental schools. It worked pretty well, but then it was with high school students who chose to go there (maybe that helped). It's going downhill fast, but was great for a time (although some other people who went there disagree).
It's called the Illinois Math and Science Academy. Any other students/graduates from there on? I know of 2, but I'd like to get the opinions of other people from there.
If you don't mind me asking, how bad was your vision? I'm starting to become extremely sick of my fairly massive prescription (around 10 diopters, but I don't know what that translates to), and was wondering if it could work for me.
An Orion? Way too many nukes. Each one takes 1000-2000 nukes if I remember correctly, and the total global stockpile is around 20000. That's just 10-20 flights. Plus, you have the side effects of all those nukes going off, which isn't pretty.
Go nuclear gas core instead. It's not nearly as big, but it's much bigger than anything else.
Actually, since we're mostly powered by various blends of caffeine and sugar, it isn't much of a problem. We only eat to maintain appearances. Otherwise, we'd technically be vampires of some sort.

7. Intel sucks! Intel has kittens for breakfast! AMD owns!
8. AMD sucks! AMD has a secret contract with Satan! Go Intel!

Ssh! Don't tell them about usenet or IRC! They still haven't figured it out by themselves!

Out of pure curiosity, what are the other major problems that you see here and plan to address?
What conventions do you go to?

Stop fearing what you don't understand

I fully expect this post to be modded troll and flamebait, although it is intended as neither.
Don't worry, I've got mod points and will fix it.
Oh, crap...
Why not have the concept of Poster Karma?

Whoever modded this informative is my new god.
Seriously, it really works wonders for killing small children!
