    i don't know a whole lot about china during the cold war put i suspect their position could be extrapolated from here, perhapse WWI era weapons for their best units and pre-WWI for their not so good but good enough to arm units. and the option to pick who to follow in order to pick up their rifle when the armed guy goes down for the rest of their troops.

    the manpower superiority of china is purely in the meatshield department. china only has enough guns for a fraction of thier military and since private gun ownership isn't permitted there is little oppurtunity for any sort of militia force to be useful.

    There are two things preventing large scale war between USA and PRC, nuclear weapons and economic dependance.

    how could it take longer than that to copy an existing filter and obfusciate it enough that MS wouldn't be likely to get caught? or if any of the filters that already exist are BSD licensed to just include it legitimately in office

    more importantly, if you have a source of energy powerful enough to move a 10 mile column of water upards at a reasonably useful rate it would be more efficient to just generate electricity and operate a refridgerator

    also you can improve the effectiveness by coating the outside of the funnel (or in ancient times making the funnel out of silver and polishing both sides) because then heat radiated from outside the funnel would not be absorbed and reradiated to the objects being cooled inside the funnel.

    sort of like diffusion, everything (not at absolute zero) emits some heat in the form of EM radiation and absorbs some EM radiation which becomes heat, by putting a mirror funel around an object on a clear night you ensure that very little radiation is absorbed by the object and that most of the radiation it emits is sent off into space

    creating a filter so word can natively open OASIS docs should not take microsoft more than a week or two, but doing so would make it easier for companies to switch away from MS so it is unlikely to happen.

    IIRC the patents related to PDF's are not in the document formats themselves but rather in variour protection techniques and DRM which are optional comnponents rarely used excepf for things like downloadable ebooks etc.

    still not secure, assuming the user is able to store configuration and data files in some read/write location, some component which reads data from that location could be exploited by saving corrupt data to that location.

    for example a virus embedded in a document which infects the instance of the operating system when metadata is read could spread far and wide within a business without ever altering a system file.

    as opposed to laptops because laptops are so simple to maintain and repair over time.

    seriously a custom designed system built to be rugged and safe for a classroom is much better than throwing a pile of money at the problem and hoping it goes away.

    how exactly is a fragile and expensive laptop more cost effective than a $20 (have to assume the school will be fleeced by manufacturers spending $2 to make each unit) block of plastic with an LED display and a few instance switches?

    i never had such luck. the only teacher in HS i had who used a punched sheet also used an inverse punched sheet to check for double marking

    Iam a huge nintendo fan due to the quality of their products, but don't kid yourself nintendo practically invented anti-competitive corporate bullying. the patented lockout chip in the NES which served only one purpose: force legitimate publishers to pay Nintendo Royalties if they wanted to sell NES compatable games.

    have you tried opera, i use firefox since my slowest computer runst at 1.3 ghz, but when i am setting up fresh installs on older hardware i usually point people towards opera. for quick safe browsing with tabs.

    i haven't seen the new error pages but i suspect they are the same as those enabled in about:config browser.xul.error_pages.enabled = true

    i think that is a problem with the flash plugin, i have seen occasional sour firefox installs almost all were involving flash. though sometimes the adobe plugin was at fault.

    I meant patching for performance, such as one version of unreal tournament would slow down horribly when certain weapons were being charged. you need control of the system because letting an automated system handle much of anything can bite you in the ass when writing for consoles, i didn't mean to imply that writing on bare metal reduces bugs.
