  1. Re:Game Programmers are weird. on Valve's Gabe Newell Speaks on Console Development · · Score: 1

console games are written for specific machines, the computational power is much more limited but is also near constant. more code runs "bare metal" and fast performance without any errors is expected. patching is rarely an option so code has to be written very close to the hardware running the console

  3. Re:c'mon on Valve's Gabe Newell Speaks on Console Development · · Score: 1

not really, being all PPC means the low level stuff doesn't need to be rewritten as much because the CPU properties (registers, memory addressing) are similar or the same. but the overall flow of the game code will have to be either vastly different in each console, or all the same and only perform well on one consol. reengineering the game to operate between weak PPC + cell and 3x PPC is much harder than porting the game to work between 1x pentium and 1x PPC.

because it's only purpose is to force customers to buy other products from the company. back in the early days of cart based video games someone (i don't think nintendo, they used patents to a similar end) used a required copyrighted piece of data as a required key from a cart before the game could load in order to ensure that all game companies payed royalties to make carts that would work, but the courts ruled in the favor of a third party manufaturer because the "copyrighted work" served no creative purpose and it's function was unrelated to any creative process

you have no understanding of economics. in a free market for a business to prosper it must provide a product or service which is superior in some way to the competition at a particular price point, as well as superior to not utilizing the service. in addition to this the business must be able to provide the service or product for less than it costs that business to produce or provide the product or service.

the essence of any business oppurtunity is efficiency and usefullness. a useful new product or service, or a more efficient way of providing an existing product or servie creates business opportunity.
