    about 10 years ago in college we toyed with the idea of a washer/dryer status monitor for the dorm, since we could not modify campus equipment our solution was to stick a network aware ammeter in front of the washers and dryers, then have a computer watch the changes in current to count how many dryers were on and how many and what stage in the cycle the washers were on.

    this was long before arduino made projects like that cheap and reliable, and we were never able to get permission to install something like that.

    private shuttles alleviate just as much congestion as public transportation, it is reasonable to allow them to use bus lanes, as long as the bus lanes are not overwhelmed by doing so

    I just remembered one of the other things that makes reddit's software substandard, markdown formatting eats valid URLS if they are not manually escaped

    how they managed to write commenting logic that allows weird unicode symbol drawing, but chews up wikipedia links i have no idea. also I prefer non-editable non-deletable comments but that is more personal preference than technical prowess

    reddit's vote logic isn't very good, by allowing unlimited up and down voting it promotes groupthink and circlejerking far more than slashcode

    it's not a battery failure, combination of Norway's unique electrical grid and the cold temperatures confuses the charging system into thinking there is a problem and it cannot safely charge

    gas chambers of all types are dangerous, if you make it totally painless/sansationless you also make it a hazard for workers if the system malfunctions.

    a fixed aim bench rifle of sufficient bore directly to the head would be a 100% effective and 100% painless execution, so long as the muzzle velocity is such that the brain is destroyed faster than a nerve impulse travels (approximately 60 mph iirc) it would be physically impossible to perceive any pain

    or we could just make life without parole the top possible penalty and save a ton of money AND make errors more reversible

    filter wheels would not fit in a smartphone, and would need to be more than wheels since the RGB channels need to be free of UV and IRso at least those two would have to be independent and able to be engaged with the color filters. fairly trivial on a "let's make one" basis, but very expensive and unreliable to "stick one in every iphone"

    older versions of blackberry OS (4? 5, 6?) had midi support in the music player, sadly BB10 does not support midi anymore

    In imperative (procedural) programming, A=B+C is an assignment statement. A is set when the assignment statement executes. Subsequent changes to B or C do not affect A, unless you specifically re-calculate A. Software developers are responsible for understanding and managing these dependencies.

    Reactive programming is a declarative approach for defining logic. Variables are defined by expressions such as A=B+C, which automatically reacts to changes in B or C.

    this is just rebadged functional programming, except using deliberately confusing syntax

    infrared and ultraviolet are intentionally excluded from cameras with filters so that the image recorded looks like it should, I suppose filters could be applied on a per pixel basis in order to make a 5 or more element R,G,B,IR,UV sensor, but the cost would be .... considerable
