  1. Re:way to go on LinuxWorld Moving to Boston · · Score: 2, Insightful

ive never seen someone whine so much about a city. I think you forgot how good the ppl's hearts are in NY especially since 9-11. Remember the blackout a few months ago. Zero riots. Zero looting. Crime is down. I dont know what your talking about w/ the dirt, crime, rudeness. Guiliani finished his term and it was time for a new mayor. I think every police dept beats up minorities and drives drunk.
If Boston is the birthplace of the revolution, that means they all rioted. Doesnt it mean its the birthplace of crime then.
NYs got the Met, Guggenheim, MoMa, Bx Zoo, so its got culture too. Not to mention broadway, times square, and rockefeller.
Our subway is huge. It can bring u anywhere in the city.
NYC certainly doesnt have the best schools but Columbia and NYU arent exactly trash.
If youve ever been to the javitts center, where linux world is held, you'd know that its remote from the busy streets and your illusions of dirt and crime. You dont have to worry!
I dont even know why im arguing with you, I went to linuxworld 2002 and i thought it was BORING.

I am paying Cablevision for approx 4000/1000.. one week, my bandwith was so horrible, I called to ask if they added a cap. They said "no, there is no cap." I asked, "then what is the maximum speed?" They replied, "Its 100mbps downstream and 10mbps upstream." Laughable.

  3. Blocking ports on Have You Fought Your ISP Over Bandwidth Limits? · · Score: 0

I am running a webserver off my cable modem for some friends of mine. (A mechanism for downloading stuff and a application server running a chat forum).
Since getting cable modem access, basically since the first day it was available, I've noticed my ISP has gotten "smarter" and I would have to work around their attempts to clobber my webserver.
    1. They said in the TOS we are not allowed to run servers. (HA! NICE TRY!!)
    2. My cable modem 'resets' whenever I upload for a random period of time
    3. They blocked popular ports 80 and 8080... and probably ports like 21, 2121 for FTP also.
    4. And the latest, they blocked HTTP requests starting w/ "www" either in or out. Meaning, when people type www.domainname.com which is DNSed to my cable modem, they get nothing.. but main.domainname.com is reachable.
I fear that they may get smarter and start blocking all HTTP requests into the gateways. But im gonna use all the possible bandwith i can possibly get. Word.

  6. What cablevision does. on ISPs Experiment With Broadband Download Capping · · Score: 0

According to dslreports.com, Cablevision's Optimum Online is one of the fastest cable/dsl internet connections available for homes.
I used to be able to get 500KB/sec download and 100 KB/s upload. But now, they've installed some sorta detection that if they notice im uploading a lot (lets say 50 KB/s for 2 minutes), they will reset my cable (meaning i lose connection and my cable modem will try to reconnect), OR if i have multiple users connected to me (as in a game server such as CS).
I believe this is horse shit. I cant get a connection to stay up ALL DAY. And since then, they've raised the price by 10 dollars.

i disagree. IE is nice if you like the media player being attached to it. but one of my biggest pet peeves is multiple windows. I like how netscape added the "tab" feature in 7.0 where i can see multiple sites w/ just one window.
