  1. VMs have more information to make better choices on The End of Native Code? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think the parent has this almost completely backwards.

As the complexity of enviornments increases (many cores, multi-chip packages etc) it's going to be harder to compile a program to binary that can take advantage of the resources on all the systems it will run upon. It may work really well on one configuration, and may run on many, but it won't make the most of the resources in many cases.

VMs have access to information about the runtime environment and can dynamically compile byte codes to binary to take the best advantage of the available resources - some can even re-compile on the fly to tighten up performance based on feedback from the environment. From a developers POV a program can run on many platforms, and can run as well on all of them.

    Check out OpenSkills (http://openskills.org/).

OpenSkills turns things around and is run by the people with the CVs. The resume model in the SkillsBase is quite sophisticated, and resumes can be exported as HR-XML.

OpenSkills is funded by it's subscribers. It is free to search the SkillsBase and there is no charge for working with people found in the SkillsBase.

It's free to get started, $20AUD to subscribe and an OpenPGP key signed by two current members is required for membership.

Perhaps OpenSkills.org would be of interest to you.

We are a non-profit association set up to help people make the most of their Skills. In many ways what we do is like other on-line resume sites, but that's only one part of what we are. People from 14 countries have signed up so far.

Anyway, have a look. You may find OpenSkills useful.

    In VisualWorks Smalltalk:

And it's been this easy from at least 1980. And it's cross platform, so it'll run just as well on a Mac or Solaris or Linux, i.e. pretty much every OS. And on Microsoft Windows too.

  6. OpenPGP *is* my identity on OpenID - Open Source Single-SignOn · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'd like to see an authentication system that used OpenPGP keys.

e.g. I go to the bank with my photo ID and my OpenPGP key fingerprint and say "this is my key".

When I want to autenticate with the bank, they use my public key (which they can get from a key server) to encrypt a secret and send it to me. I demonstrate I have the private key and know the pass phrase by decrypting the cypher and extracting the secret ... more hand-shake stuff and ...

    ... authenticated!

I don't need the bank to know my password, and I can have one password for everywhere that uses this OpenPGP based approach.

I can't imagine a Kerberos (or Kerberos-like) single sign-on mechanism would be a huge step (relatively speaking) from this point.

I have worked at many banks, and they have all worked in different ways.

I have never worked at a bank as extreme as the one you describe though, but then I mostly worked with trading banks, and they tend to be rather more dynamic. In fact, in these banks home-grown application software is in in the majority.

I even heard that one bank built their own workstations completely from scratch. This was in the days when Sun was in competition with Apollo.

So, there is plenty of latitude for the introduction of standards-based solutions in these organisations. And that in turn means that FOSS can be used. And the banks I've worked with choose best-of-breed solutions, so FOSS has a good chance. IMHO.

  9. OpenPGP Single Sign-on? on Password Security Panned · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'd like to only have to remember one password, and I'd rather not tell anyone else what it is. Even banks, or shopping sites.

I have an OpenPGP key. It strikes me that there mist be some way to register my public key with a site, and then have that site challenge me to decrypt a random string. This can only be done using my private key + my password.

Could this use of OpenPGP keys form the basis of a single sign-on model (well, single password model)?

Surely it must be possible for me to give my public key to a bank (or whatever) and have them authenticate me using that key. e.g. by them sending out a hash, having me sign it using my private key, and then having them check that the signature is good.
