  1. Create a new distrobution on United Linux Dead · · Score: 4, Insightful

So UL died. Financial chaos insues. Just create another distro based on what you learned. I find that Linux distrobutions are successfull based on the research that was done to them. Debian has apt and has official packages controlled and standardized. Redhat pushes ease of use with a corporate twist. SuSE has european nations in its grasp and has a little of column A and a little of column B in it, a well balanced distro you might say. Slackware is the tried and true throw everything in and let the user sort it out "hackers" distro. Though its become a lot more friendly to use and is evolving nicely. United Linux wanted to take all the ideas and somehow work them into one. Thier goal was to make a standard set of packages what would work seamlessly together and be user friendly. They wanted to create a set of rules to follow when adding non-official packages and work on schemes to make packages work together and not break each other be accident. There goals have never been met by any distrobution to date. I still see hope for what they were trying to do. Just move on and do it under a different name. Rework management AKA reorganize and try again. The little distro the could so to speak. /rant off

Yahoo has a long ways to go. Aquiring geocities was the last smart thing yahoo did. (that and beefing up my email quota for free) Google has made a lot of news lately about how they try to be non-intrusive as a search engine and try to make it quick, simple, and have relevent search results instead of 10 advertisements and then a real search result. Until yahoo can do something really gripping I'll keep using Google for search engine. If yahoo is smart they will keep focused on thier "community" appeal. They are friggen awsome and community even if that community is the redlight district for teens. With that... I miss the old Geocities. I also miss Altavista (powered by digital) in its prime. /rant off

  9. Why do people water cool thier computers? on One-Way Ticket to Mars? · · Score: 1

#1 reason - because we can. I agree with the former poster that we should go to mars because we can. Another good reason to go is to rape the planet for its resources. Also Mars has less gravity then Earth so it would be easier to launch material into space. There is all this talk about putting a space station on the moon. The moon is thought to be 99% basalt rock which is mostly silica based. Now basalt rock is one of the most common rocks found on the earth and silica is an abundant resource. The moon then cannot offer us any resources that we cannot already get easily here on earth. The moon would be a decent jumping off point because of its very low gravity and zero atmosphere but radiation and temperature would make a base difficult to build. I would guess that it would need to be built deep underground with heavily shielded and fortified above ground structures. Mars has atmosphere, gravity, less temperature changes(although its always pretty cold). I am not sure of the radiation factor but it certainly must be less then our moon. Mars has readily available resources. and I would guess what would happen eventually is that we would send an expedition to mars, setup a permanent base of operations, and start automated factories to make liquid hydrogen and oxygen so that the expedition can make it back to earth. ~6 months there and ~8months. Also automated factories and robots could begin extracting minerals for some beneficial purpose. Lastly the fastest way to make use of Mars would be for private industry to do the manned expeditions. NASA is in the spotlight and if the first manned mission to mars went poorly it would likely be 10-20 years later until another atempt was made. NASA is great for funding new technologies and research. But unless pushed will not do anything overly risky by themselves.

The real trick is telling what is the barrel you want to pick up from the barrel you want to go around. We used the touch to avoid objects after they had been detected by a forward ir radar. We need to start a Geek, gamer's rights movement. I think the bigest problem is that a game is looked at as being just another form of entertainment. The personality and lifestyle difference of an avid gamer never comes into the public light. Of course if it ever did it would be to a negative light. This is the same reason that stereotypes have hindered many minorities in the united states.
