What if every road had a toll? The problem with this is that some areas would be better developed. Like the cities. The suburbs and small towns would be left with little infrastructure as the population density in that area would not be able to fund roads, schools , etc. Of course maybe moving most of the american populace would be a good thing for the environment. However, even the cities in Europe fund public transport with taxes and ticket fees. Our society would also be less educated. With out taxes only people with kids would be paying for the schools. Only the wealthy would be able to afford education. One of the great achievments of the 20th century was public education for the masses. We simply could not compete with out a large well educated work force. An even greater economic burden would be placed on families under a per use fee. The middle class and lower classes would get nickle and dimed to death to maintain the life style we have today. I can not see how this would be a step forward for society.

Would we also pay a per use fee on the military? If my house burned down would I also have to pay the fire department for coming out to my house?

However, they are also making their money from society. Therefore they should have a moral obligation to also do what is good for the community. I understand that lay offs are necessary to keep a company in business. However, Corporations that lay off people to soley chase huge profits should be taxed more than a company that keeps it's employee's. Why should a kid in Alabama not get similar funding to a kid in a wealthy neighbor hood in a wealthy state. We are all Americans. It's in our best interest to have all Americans well educated.

I grew up in Central Florida in the 80's and 90's in a county notorious for its "snow birds". Snow birds are basically retiree's from the north. The snow birds didn't want to pay local taxes to fund the schools. The end result was that our schools were poorly funded. Extra curricular programs were limited. The AC wouldn't work sometimes. It's hard to get a kid motivated when they can plainly see that no one wants to invest in their education. The funding is a joke and the kids know it.

is it because there is no standardization that there needs to be a 'fix'?

Codes are meant to keep buildings safe. Building an unsafe home will affect neighbors. An unstable building can colapse and hit other buildings. An improperly wired/gassed home could catch fire/explode and destroy others property. International news always has stories of people dieing in accidents in the 3rd world that could have been prevented if there codes. Many of the accidents are similar to things that happened in the USA in the 1930's and 1920's before we had codes. Ever notice that doors in newer public buildings open out? This is to allow quick exit during a fire. Imagine a room full of paniced people pressed against a door that opens in. That's why we have building codes. I am sure there are cases of corruption. However codes and standards are what seperate the us from the third world.

The warm water from the Gulf Stream is what keeps Europe more temperate. Look on a globe and compare the latitude of London to Nova Scotia. If the gulf stream shuts down most of Northern Europe will become a tundra. Such a shift in climate will be financially and politically disasterous to the world.

However, 20 years of embryonic research would most likely yield real results we could use in society at a fraction of the cost of Star Wars. I am all for a missle defense shield. Is that cost not worth working towards? There is no financial reason why research cannot be done on both types. This is a much more noble and realistic goal than the Star Wars program started in the 80's and continued under Bush Jr. The Star Wars program was and still is considered a far off possibility. I would wager that 10 years of research would yeild much better results than the 20 years of Star Wars research.

This thread is probably dead. However, I am tired of the old ,"I can afford an SUV. I should be able to buy it. It's a free society!" argument. This is just the liberal attitude that the "Conservatives" have in this country. Lets see. 1. You are more likely to die in an SUV due to roll over. So you really are not safer. 2. The extra size and weight means more wear and tear on the road. Thus we have to pay more in taxes to keep our roads paved more regularly. 3. The increase in fuel usage means higher prices for fuel. So high amounts of SUV's mean higher gass prices for you and I. 4. The increase in fuel usage also means higher dependence on foreign countries. Thus we have to pay more in taxes and in lives to protect our interests in oil. 5. They polute our air much more. We will have all sorts of fallout from increased medical bills due to air pollution. We are probably experiencing this now with the elevated amounts of asthma in our youths today. Don't think that air pollution impacts your health. Even though I do not own an SUV. I am technically paying an SUV tax. I do not want to subsidize the use of SUV's with my communities money, lives and health just so some people can liberally use SUV's to look cool. This is about being a true Conservative and not wasting a precious resource and doing what is best for society. Some people actually need an SUV like our farmers and small business owners they need the use of big vehicles to keep our society moving. However, the 90% of people that are using them as grocery grabbers need to think about the community and do the right thing. Those people should get taxed to make up for the cost of the community just to look cool.
