  1. legal wheel keeps on turning on LokiTorrent Shut Down · · Score: 4, Insightful

Does it really help a torrent or ED2k site if you send money to help with legal fees? I would think this would only complicate the defense - having to prove that the money was only used for the benefit of the website.

It looks like the P2P world is going to go through a bit of a shuffle until it can find the "sweet spot" country that will not prosecute, just like what happened with online bookies and casinos.

This story is getting pretty tired. Pirates figure out a smart way to distribute media, old fashioned companies too lazy to change their business model start suing the pants off of everybody, nothing changes in the long run, and in the end the company adopts the new methodologies or dies.

How many times must history repeat itself before companies learn to listen to their consumers? They know what they want better than any marketing department.

Oh yeah, and screw the proprietor of Lokitorrent for being a spineless jellyfish. He did a real disservice to his visitors by ratting them out. There needs to be a P2P code of conduct with a corresponding logo on list sites to tell users that their privacy will be protected if the site comes under legal fire.

The FAQ sheds some light on the software functionality.

Parent File Scan communicates with the developer, DtecNet, only to tell it what version of the program you're using. I'm sure the devs will keep your IP address in a locked vault away from the MPAA. They'd tell you in plain English, in this FAQ or on their cutesy flash homepage, if they intended to connect to your IP with BT or Emule, right? Right!

They also state that the program cannot differentiate between "legal and illegal copies", whatever that means.

  8. Donkeys work for Gator? When pigs fly! on Microsoft Releases AntiSpyware Program · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've installed it (bypassing the genuine OS scan on the download page) and ran it once. It picked up a lot of stuff that neither Ad-Aware nor Spybot found, which was very impressive. It ran MUCH more quickly than Ad-Aware SE.

Strangely, it identified "Edonkey2000" (I have eMule) as a potential adware carrier. I've never known an ED2k client to show ads. Thankfully, the default action for eMule was "Ignore" and there was an "Ignore always" option as well.

Antispyware has the potential to raise the bar for this type of security application. However, I'm a little worried that this beta will turn out to be the best and most functional iteration of the product. The preferential treatment for IE in the options is to be expected, but it could become a troublesome feature if MS pushes their browser too hard.

Very good points, although they are only applicable to cases in the USA. Smart pirates could run a Linux virtual machine like Cygwin and run the BT client from there. When they get the dreaded RIAA letter in the mail they can switch to that spare NIC in the closet and claim "I don't use that client or operating system and that's not my MAC". Er, but that would be immoral.

I'm not really getting this... It's easier to patch than to reverse-engineer, so I presume the warez version of the game is supplied with a crack that fakes out the Steam authentication so that it doesn't know it's being tricked. Nobody who is interested only in the single player game will connect to another computer online.

How can they expect to track people? Bittorrent? The only tracking information specified in BT is IP address, and most people have a dynamic IP which can be changed by unplugging their modem for 10 minutes.

I think people have the right to be policed by POLICE, not by companies. Companies should have the right to hire reputable companies to research suspected copyright infringement. Corporations should not have the right to snoop on people's private property and delete whatever they want - ESPECIALLY with an automated utility. If it was okay for anyone to be their own police, that would be anarchy. If America was anarchy they wouldn't have just had a presidential election.

Plus it's the MPA*A* - America only. I hope the MPAA does go through with this hackneyed plan so that they delete the private, legal files of some poor Brazillian who, in turn, sues the MPAA and the American government for allowing such a travesty.
