When you get that load sensing and balancing for the SAME price as you get your App Server then it makes some sense. F5 and Cisco load balancers that balance at Layer 5 or above are not cheap.Websphere comes out of the box with this capability for ZERO extra and that Websphere code is Java so you have Java app server code load balancing Java apps on multiple machines or on multiple "virtual servers" on the same physical machine.
PDFs of "public domain" or donated works will always be available. Amazon has gotten enough sh*t about the excerpts that they publish to entice the reader to buy the book. Google "e-book" and you'll see Yahoo! is nowhere near the only source. There is even an open-source e-book idea at Open eBook - http://www.openebook.org/ -- Information on the publication specification for electronic books that will allow compatibility between different e-book devices.
I just wonder how Yahoo! will make $$$ of this very small market of public domain works, or if they DO get repro rights to other books what the price model is to download them, or will you just see advertisements in your e-books? The authors are not going to give up their $$$ nor is Yahoo so somebody is going to have to pay for this content.
Are you new here? RIAA and MS Bashing are staples of/.! Without those articles no one would post a thing, and poor Cmdr Taco would go bankrupt;)
Look up "fair use" on Copyright. There are instances where you can download music without violating copyright. There are also works that can be considered public, so no permission is needed. People have been doing this with other forms of music distribution for years, and some studies show "illegal" downloading actually increases Sales. The RIAA hasn't gone after those! Of course they are now threatening the #1 Legit Source of Downloads (iTunes) since iTunes won't charge more than 99 cents/song. It's illegal in many cases but what the RIAA is can also be considered illegal. Sometimes to make changes happen you have to play outside the "rules". If everyone was so concerned about the rules all the time, there would have been no Boston Tea Party and so on..
I don't doubt the Russians would sell their Grandmother to who ever had the money. But the Chinese could cut out the middle man and get it for nothing if they had Dr Olsen. Of course getting it for nothing is just good business for the "Chinese Capitalists";) They also then might have something better than what the Russkies offer which of course they would sell/trade back.
The Russians are OK, If he was flying with the Chinese THEN we worry. I suspect there would be a "horrible accident" and Dr. Olsen would be killed (i.e. disappear until they could get all the technology secrets from him).
Can we use the "nuller" to remove the offending glare from the fake teeth, fake breasts, overdone cosmetic surgeries and massive egos of the Hollywood "stars"?
GREAT IDEA!!! Adobe domes!!! Like the houses the settlers built in the Southwest. My wife's grandparents had one of those. Very cool in the summer and cozy enough in the winter due to the insulating of the walls. You want a new window, cut a hole and put in the window and mud up the cracks.
My points exactly on using the Monolithic Domes from concrete. Affordable, can handle 300 MPH winds, don't burn (insides can but not outside in). You can frame rooms within them to make the "square" living areas. Wasted space? Some but if you get creative that can be extra storage or extra insulation. There is a community of these domes on I-35 South between Dallas and Waco, TX if you are in the area take a look (no I don't have anything to do with the dome companies). My daughter did some research for a homeschool project as to "How should we build on Mars" and she chose the domes. Very sharp idea for a 16 yr old!!
YOu ever seen a web log from a server? I have and I can tell you exactly what was done when if you have the right options turned on. If you know how to read it you can pretty much tell the tale. Of course it takes LOTS of disk space for these logs and they are dumped every few days so there may not be a record.
Yes, it is a civil case but I read the complaint and I can't see a claim in there. The Federal Rules of Evidence might apply here depending on if it is heard by a Magistrate Judge but in any case each side has to fully brief the other side otherwise how can they prepare a complete defense?. Of course you can play games and keep them in the dark as long as you can get away with it. No surprises like on TV;) IANAL, but I know quite a few.
IIRC, I said perception of the DEFENDANT. Lawyers too maybe, some lawyers juries seem to love and some they hate. For silly reasons like the way they look or the way they express themselves.
Two words...Geodesic Domes
You inflate a rubber form, put some fiberglass over it for to strengthen then pour concrete. They have forms that have doors, windows, etc already there. It's pretty cheap, they are amazingly well insulated, and very sturdy. Painted cool colors they look nice.
It depends on the laws covering indictments in that State. There is an old lawyer saying that "You can get a Grand Jury to indict a ham sandwich" which means the prosecutor gets a lot of leeway at that level and does not have to be specific. However, at the real trial there generally needs to be a lot of SPECIFIC evidence to convict. If it is a criminal offense evidence must be "beyond a shadow of a doubt", civil cases just need to be "preponderance of evidence". And then again juries are funky, they can convict or set free based on how thier perceive the defendant and the prosecutor. OJ got off but Scott Peterson got nailed. Neither case really had a lot of evidence that directly proved murder. This case could also end up settling out of court, unless those who are being sued have deep pockets or a pro bono [no charge] lawyer. The RIAA or defendant can always subpoena the logs from the IP provider (assuming they kept any) that should settle a lot of things. If the RIAA has logs they have to turn them over to the defense as per the Rules of Evidence.
Of course then we would have to build the Linux Space Station "Tvorlds" to prove the MS SpaceStation "Ballmer" with it's proprietary technologies is bad and evil. Penguins in Space!
Of course, Having THREE Space Stations (1.5 working, the OpenSource one and 25% of the other two) is a step forward from where the ISS is now.
Good point, someone should Mod you up (don't have mod points today). If you are in contruction, you are often unionized and that helps wages. Geeks have tried to organize but can't seem to.
Construction workers often get overtime and since they are hourly it is PAID at 1.5X. Try asking your PHB for OT pay at your regular scale.
I had a cousin who dropped out of High School, went to work as an electrician, got his licenses, and made about $25/hour plus OT while I was in making 35K right out of school with a BSCS working 60 hour weeks as a Programmer. He went on to start his own business in electrical contracting and made a fortune then retired about 45.
So yea, construction can pay if you get into the skilled trades. Just being a Laborer is not going to do it though.
Ethnic cleansing..hardly.. The Jews in Israel are from many many different ethnicities. If you are talking about the Palestineans, that's a bit different but still not as you say. Most Palestineans are NOT all citizens (some are...there are Palestinean Jews, and some Arabs are also citizens), they are workers for the most part. However they are allowed to live there as long as they behave. Just like foreign nationals in most countries...you are welcome as long as you follow the rules.
How can it be "ethnic cleansing" to protect yourself from terrorists like Hamas? Hamas is made of radicals from many parts of the Middle East, so that's not Ethnic Cleansing either. An Arab is not an Arab, and many who look like Arabs may actually be Syrians, Turks, Persians, and other smaller ethnicities. "Arab" is really a derogatory catch-all term. About the only thing these people share is the Moslem relgion (of all sorts of sects), hatred of Israel and darker skin.
Prove YOUR credentials to me, as you asked me, are you an Astronaut? What is your background in space systems and mission safety? I'll give you a hint about mine, 20+ yrs Space and Military Systems Development, ISS, several Science Missions, many military projects, and part of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board.
ALL the Astronauts were very supportive of our CAIB work, many even helped us behind the scences. They DO NOT want to go up and NOT come down. SAFETY of the entire MISSION is critical to them. The problem is NASA only wants to listen and address those safety issues AFTER they happen. That is a BIG conclusion of the CAIB. It's damned obvious you have not read it.
Having worked with pilots of all sorts for many years, they support making things safer, but the Management often does not since it costs more. In almost all the cases, Management wins. Shuttle Pilots take risks and don't even blink, however they trust the risks have been managed as best they can by the engineers, at least two times that trust has been misplaced.
How does one "sound like an engineer"? You want me to give technical details? I would but in many cases I am prohibited by law or contractual agreements. If you can't tell something about my profession from the UserID then you aren't much of one.
"Names for it in English"? Are you from outside the USA? Unless you are from Russia you got nothing to compare with NASA and the Shuttle. If not then shut the fuck up about OUR Space Program and get your own. It's so easy to attack someone when you haven't a clue about the topic or have no defense for thier arguments.
...something Americans do because often the causes are wrong in American minds.
Really? I don't see any huge public movement for NASA to cancel space flight which would the case if your statement was correct. Most of the public is IGNORANT of the risks, they just like the "gee whiz" effect. And for sure they are not competent to judge the risks. Those of us who ARE competent to judge the risks and the chances those risk may come to pass are not highly thought of at NASA. We just give off too many "negative vibes" I guess.
These were the guys who used to be the heat for the Columbian Cocaine Cartel. Since the Columbian Goverment busted the cartel they branched out into the Internet security area. Why not, they are as qualifed as most of the consultants out there!
Labor is the FULL cost of labor, wages + benefits. Materials is the FULL costs of Materials, cost + delivery fees
Calculating your profit for Taxes is a bit different (some things you can't deduct, you have to capitalize). Calculating Free Cash Flow is yet again different.
I agree. However, the "fourth" branch of Governemnt, The Agenices can make law WITHOUT the consent of Congress. It happens all the time, they are only required to publish the law for review/comment. They FEC, which is pushing this blog law, is the culprit. The agencies answer to no one it seems, the only way to get a agency rule reversed or stricken is to have Congress pass a law abolishing the regulation or do it in the Courts. Both long, drawn out processes. I don't think any Congress Critter would vote Yea on this, in fact it is NOT even a bill before Congress, it's a court ruling in support of a regulation the FEC (A Gov't Agency) wants to make.
Lately the RIAA has been going after BOTH. Don't you recall the case of them suing the little old lady whose Grandkid had download some 100's of songs using Granny's IP address (and her computer of course)
yep, and Joe User can still be sued for downloading the "pirated" movies/music/games/etc. no matter WHERE they got it. Just a thought, you know if they had did this with P*rn during the early days of the 'Net the things we have now would have taken a lot longer to get here. It's a fact that early adopters (and improvers) of technology have been those on the "dark side" such as P*rn and Gambling.
Get off your thinly disguised political attack on GWB and the situation in Iraq. The SAME systems would have elected the other party candidate if the voters had so desired. Would it have been alright then?
Catastrophic effects on society? You are reading WAY too much into US Elections. Are you even from the USA? Learn how the system works before you talk about effects. The President is really not as powerful as you think.
I have done software validation for mission critical systems for many years in my 25 yrs in software and there is no such thing as an EASY proof. Can a system be proven correct? Yes they can given enough time/money. Perhaps Diebold rushed things a bit, but then again the ARE a business and as such products need to get to market sometime or another. "You can just pay armies of hackers" to try to break something," just your suggestion of that shows me you have no understanding of software or system test methodologies.
Ulterior motives? Be very careful there you are bordering on libeling Diebold. They could bring charges. The fact that they have not does NOT mean they couldn't. Truth is they screwed up but that does not protect you from your statement about motive.
"Too much trouble", are you a teenager who does not understand how the real world works? There is ALWAYS a threshold where things are "good enough" and they get sent to market and updates made later. Where they level is must be set by someone, the market or the customers are best but if not the manufacturer does it. Worst case the Government mandates a performance standard. I'm much more concerned about systems (Electic grids, Nuclear plants, refineries) that if they fail can have "catastrophic" effects on society and are running on Windows than I am voting machines.
Just recently I saw an article somewhere (maybe here?) that said because we do more things at one time now, we don't do each one as compeltely as we should therefore we are getting DUMBER. I thought that was a huge jump to a unsupported conclusion. I tend to think it reduces our workload doing the mundane and we can focus on the more important tasks (like posting to/.)

Here is the formula I got with my MBA and I have used in my own business for years.
Sales - Costs of Goods Sold (materials & Labor) = Gross Margin
Gross Margin - Sales Costs (Marketing, Commissions, Advertising) - Corporate Overhead Allocation (Mgt, R&D, Interest Expenses, Debt Service, Inventory Costs, etc) = NET Margin
NET Margin - Taxes - ExtraOrdinary Expenses (Plant Closings, Lawsuits, Hurricanes) = Profit
Labor is the FULL cost of labor, wages + benefits.
Materials is the FULL costs of Materials, cost + delivery fees
Calculating your profit for Taxes is a bit different (some things you can't deduct, you have to capitalize).
