The speed of sound in a vacuum is Zero. Sound has to have air to propogate. Hence the saying "In Space no one can hear you Scream".
Mach 10 is pretty fast but I seem to recall some Aussies who broke Mach 15 with a very small scale Scamjet mounted on a rocket to give it the intial boost. The name HyShot? HighShot? seems to be what I recall. I don't have time to Google it.
Off topic, mod down.
The article talks about how irresponsible journalists present fringe science as proven facts. In the scienftic world you can find some folks with very outlandish views who have been proven wrong, but the views they have often seem to appeal to those with certain agendas (like journalists). These folks are often outspoken but cannot produce facts to back up their position. There there are the legitimate contrarians who really are onto something but it's not accepted practice and all they get is bad press. Unless you do your own research it's hard to tell which is which the way it's reported in the papers and magazines.
WOW!! A post on/. actually SUPPORTING outsourcing!! What is the world coming to?;)
It does bring up an interesting question, WHY NOT? I mean we outsource damn near all else but Games seem to be off-limits. Can someone give me a reason why? Don't the standard arguments hold about cheaper labor but just as good a quality? Or is there some worry about IP? Are the outsourced programmers/designers not as creative?
It's not you. Of course this is also/. and no one actually RTFA's, they just yap away about them with no knowledge.
I think 90% of the Bush/Iraq bashing posters are just young folks who have not been around long enought really don't understand how the world works. (Hint: It don't work they way ANY of us think it should) Heck most college kids don't even understand how thier own Government works. Just goes to show the educational system in the USA is pretty screwed up.
Nope not random, places I have gotten calls from about PM Jobs and/or Enterprise Architect jobs. They all want 10-15 or more years experience. Entry level jobs are hard to find.
As far as expenses go you are right. I have turned down work in CA at double my rate because the living costs would just eat it all up.
Damn, is anyone on/. capable of doing anything but beleiving all the media and your liberal professors tell you? Do your OWN research, or do they not teach that skill anymore? I really would like to see how many of you actually know how to THINK about anything but technology. Maybe that ability is something that comes with age, and I suspect the average age of the/. poster is about 21-25.
Go look at:
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdoc.cfm?index=5746&type= 1
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/02inplim.pdf (see page 11)
The stats show that (in 2002) 2.4M folks made incomes of over 200K and they paid 330.6M in taxes, while the "Middle Class" (50-100K) paid only 206M spread across 26.5M taxpayers.
Liberals get so blind in your hatred of anything that doesn't put money in your pocket for doing nothing you can't even see the plain facts. I don't like taxes either and wish I could pay less but I'm not getting all bent about it.
The Only good Terrorist is a dead one. Those people don't beleive in sitting down and talking thru the differences.
The Bush tax cuts HELP the middle class, or are you so dumb you can't even read the IRS stats? To wish gloom and doom on your own country is just totally sick. You also take a VERY short-sighted view of things. A stable Iraq will be very helpful in the long run in the Middle East. What if we had just left Germany and France all alone after WWII like we did after WWI, we might be fighting THERE right now.
Kids these days playing on the parents PC's and posting to/...Sheesh..
I see signs that are good here. Like I said I have been around a while and I know what I see. I prefer to be more optimistic but temper that with realism. Maybe your crystal ball is better than mine, let's wait 9 months and see shall we? Maybe a little side bet to make it interesting??
Voting is not futile, it's your right. Folks have died that you may have that right..USE IT!! Having a vote "machine" is old as the election process. The GOP just did a better job this time. Or you could look at the 35 yrs or 9 Presidents cyle and see that maybe the pendelum has swung in a new direction.
I don't see any accusations of Vote Fraud on the GOP side, however it is a well documented fact the Dems paid operatives in Crack Cocaine to forge Voter Reg cards in Ohio. In Philly there were 4,000 votes for Kerry on a machine in one precinct at the start of the day when all totals were supposed to be zero! You could get away with vote fraud on a small scale but not on a large enough scale to swing a National election. When things are as close as the 04 election was said to be there were a lot of eyes looking for fraud. I think a lot of this is just conspiracy nuts, and I would have said the same thing had Bush lost.
Yes, I'm pretty decent at both. I was fortunate to have a good education (BSCS and MBA) and a strong work ethic plus having good mentors/role models early in my career. It's not always been easy, to survive I have had to change jobs often and have moved several times. But I've not gone under! I'm a IT downturn survivor I guess!
You know if all you people who say you REALLY Hate Bush would have bothered to Vote I'd say things would have been different. The "young vote" never happened. If you don't vote you have no right to bitch.
"The quasi-management techies will remain unemployed."
Really? So the check I get every week for going to this place called "work" is really an Unemployment check? Wow, 6 figures a year for doing nothing! I bet Bender and Homer would both be impressed!
Agreed. I just interviewed for a job last week that needed a clearance, they are plentiful. I have a Clearance in the not so distant past so I know the rules. The big stumbling blocks are non-citizen, having relatives in a foreign nation especially one hostile to the USA, a bankruptcy, a criminal record, or having had a clearance revoked for some reason. If you are a citizen, never been arrested, have decent credit and no foreign relatives you can get a Secret level clearance but you are going to be waiting 18 months to 2 yrs. Anything above Secret and the rules get much tighter. At very high levels they ever ask about your lifestyle!
Ditto, me too..yeah what he said.
I got 4 emails and 2 calls today for IT Architect roles or Web Development Project Manager. That doesn't mention the Progranmmer emails I get (and delete) as I have not written code in years. I don't see or hear about as many unemployed IT workers as I did 2-3 years ago. Granted some of these jobs are not in what I consider desirable locations (like Minnesota, Maine, Kansas or Miami), but others may love these locations. And sometimes the $$$ are a bit low but if someone needs a job they are out there. Or maybe my view is biased as the more experienced are in more demand and I have 20+ yrs in the business ?
This concept is still used today in a Pin Router (no, not something that works on Printed Circuit Boards). The tracing arm follows a pattern made of metal that contains the curve to be traced, the cutting bit is joined to this arm and moves in and out based on the curve while moving down the wooden blank with a set speed. The wood is turning on a spindle. If it works why change it? You are just basically tracing a design in 2-D and translating that to 3D.
LDAP is not the same as AD. They share some common features but AD does more than implement the RFC.
LDAP = Lightweight Directory Access Protocol as was based on the X.500 protocol as I recall. But it was "lighter" for the web. LDAP has been implemented all over the place on many different OSes. See http://www.gracion.com/server/whatldap.html for some history on LDAP.
AD=Active Directory which is a MS ONLY service, and it controls a whole lot more than LDAP does, such as setting your PC security, firewall configurations, access permissions, etc. Last time I looked AD had something like 300 plus configuration settings for an NT box.
China wants to be seen as a superpower military AND economic. Their space program is run by the military (as was ours in the early days). China has always wanted to be the 3rd (now 2nd) superpower.
Deficits are not owed to other countries, they become part of the National Debt which is owed to Treasury Bond Holders many of whom are US Citizens, and citizens of many other countries as well. Why? Because they are a SAFE investment. The US Government doesn't owe any other National Goverment any funds unless maybe for military bases in those countries. I think you have things mixed up with "balance of payments" whereby the US buys more imported goods than it sells exports, but that difference is driven by business and the consumers and is not something the Government owes.
In actuality a lot of the work is done in custom ASICs and the software is more for configuration and control. If you had the logic for the ASICs then you got the good stuff. The code may be interesting but not as critical. I worked at Cisco ( as a consultant) when this stuff was first "stolen" and the IP Security lawyers and the best internal folks looked into it and they determined the big deal was HOW it got out, not WHAT got out. Can you trust folks like this to actually GIVE you what you paid for? They have no issues with stealing code so why not steal your 24K too?
I don't think SCO has the cash flow to drag this out much longer. Remember they have the Novell case and the RedHat case pending as well. I seem to recall over at Groklaw (http://www.groklaw.net)that somone did the math which showed at the rate they are going with NEGATIVE net income, plus legal expenses they could hold out around 16 months with the cash they have on the books. And that was about 4 months ago. Even when they go "tits up" the legal cases will continue. If you really want deep insight into SCO vs. The World read Groklaw.
I don't dispute that SOME projects get access. But the ones I worked on didn't. I think you are talking about ISS and other Code M projects. And we did NOT rub the developers wrong, we were not allowed to even CONTACT them to discuss issues. Go ask some of the folks who work on Code S projects how hard certain project offices tried to prevent them from doing thier job (go ask about HST and SWIFT). The same things happened again on GLAST. It's NOT the attitude of the IV&Vers, it's all dependant on the Project Offices attitudess. We were always very co-operative and would take time to explain what we saw and offer suggestions on how to fix things. I know many times I went to a major review (after fighting to go) and when I finally met the developers they had no clue who IV&V was? They had never got our inputs! I know with the new funding model where the $$$ come from Hdqtrs that is supposed to change, and I hope it does.
As far as WV is concerned the people there are great, it's the weather that I hated. Born and raised in the South I have no tolerance for cold just as someone else has none for heat.
Just think about the population difference in the US and China. They have 1.3 BILLION people, we have 290 MILLION. So they have 4-5 times our population. Plus in China the only ones called prisoners are the actual criminals. The rest are being re-educated. Since groups like Amnesty, the International Red Cross and other fact finding groups are banned from fact finding missions in China we really don't know the TRUE statistics, only what the Gov't tells us they are. We found out that the former Soviet Union had extremely under reported the full extent of the Gulags and other types of political imprisonment. Why would China be any different? Many church missionaries have reported that what the Chinese Gov't tells us is grossly exaggerated to thier benefit, in other words its propoganda. In the USA our prisoners don't work to produce exportable products, about the most they do is make license plates or maybe grow some crops, or pickup litter, clean right of ways and maybe build a few roads. Big differences exist, you are comparing Apples and Grapefruits.
Saudi Arabia is the largest supplier of crude oil to the USA
Here is the reference
http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/quickfacts/quickoil.ht ml
If you click on the litle "?" by each line in the table you will see that OPEC and Non-OPEC are almost equal in what they supply. Of the Non-OPEC nations Mexico supplies the most Crude. Canda supplies the most amount of petro products overall (oil, gas, distillates, etc.).
As far as your "beef", BSE is a fatal disease (I'm not too sure about the science of "prions" that supposedly cause it) and ANY country has a right to protect the health & safety of it's citizens. The EU wouldn't let some US Chicken Products in a few years ago after an outbreak of a disease killed some chickens in the general area where the banned products were from. Perfectly legit in my opinion. No use taking chances.
However, GM foods have been shown to be quite safe, but if you prefer you can always grow your own food and that way you are sure it is OK. But don't come asking Uncle Sam for a handout of grain to your country when you starve from that type of agriculture. Everything in life is a choice, but whatever choice you make has consequences you should weigh before making that choice!
Yes, you are so far off I don't know where to start.
Just answer this:
Do you WORK at the Center? Tell me what city it is in? Who are the contractors? Who got the center started? Who is the director? Who does he/she report to? How many floors in the building? What is on each floor? If you don't know this then go back to lurking as you have no credibility to disparage my comment. I was there,in the organization for quite some time, I know what I saw. I still maintain close contacts with the people in the facility. Sounds to me like you are just repeating the NASA party line, which is to be expected. The truth is one thing you will rarely get at NASA. Nothing is going to convince me when this is all based on personal experience.
The speed of sound in a vacuum is Zero. Sound has to have air to propogate. Hence the saying "In Space no one can hear you Scream".
