Across the country it can do millions of counts per hour. Australia has been doing so for years, we normally have a result by 10 or so in the evening. The size of the country really makes no difference, America is much larger but would have about the same number of votes per voting place to count.

Voting here is also really fast, I've never had to wait a single minute -- and that's not because of low turn out as it is compulsary.

  10. Preferential voting in Australia solves this on Does Voting Technology Affect Election Outcomes? · · Score: 2, Interesting

In Australia, we have preferential voting. This means one can vote for some small party, and if they don't get in (likely), the vote still goes to the second preference so it isn't wasted.

This also benifits the small parties in two additional ways:

    1. as they get to direct preferences (on their how to vote cards), bigger parties will make deals to get the preferences. This means the little parties get to have policy input on the big parties, proportial to the amount of primary votes they get (or the big parties think they will get).

    2. The more votes they get, the more public election campaign funding they get for next time.

I just got it. He objected to my saying it was a stopgap.

I modified the sentence he objected to, so as to say that it was viewed from 2000 onward as a stopgap for ebusiness customers, but not necessarily for all. I felt he was right about that point. I do fix articles all the time, when I learn more or realize I have made a mistake or need to nuance something. I had an article ready to say so, but his article came out while I was sleeping.

It's why my readers trust Groklaw, actually, I think. They know I care about being accurate above all things, and if anyone has more information that would result in further editing or correcting, I'm happy to receive it.

Our policy from the beginning has been to correct anything that needs correcting, so don't hesitate to let me know if you see any needed corrections. We are striving for an accurate portrayal of the SCO litigation, for future historians, and so getting it right is vital. And Groklaw's advantage is that it's a group effort, not just me, so all the input is of great value.

You can't really classify a camera phone as being in the "photography market". They are in the "camera phone" market, and there is a large difference. Anyone looking for decent optics, a zoom, good resolution and a raft other other features that camera phone's lack, will still need to buy a real camera.

Granted they may replace the bottom of the range camera's with very few features as it is, or even if they get good enough the really compact ones (saves you carrying two devices), but for those of us who want half decent photos not just "happy snaps", we'll stick to a real photographical camera thank you very much.
