As a software developer, I can see where the call for that comes from - but it's just about as misplaced as it could be. Software developers aren't the 'standard' the rest of the world should orient themselves by.
In junior high, even though I was already planning a career in computers, I still had to take shop class, something I didn't plan to really use. Still, I learned a bit about using some of the basic tools that might be around the house to get some tasks done with them. While my woodwork would probably never measure up to professional standards, I can probably do a few things if I need to for myself.
The same could be said for computers. Even those who don't plan to become professional software developers could still use the skills learned for better use of a this other tool that's likely to be around the house...
as long as you take everything with a metric tonne of salt
No, I think that's a big part of modern health issues... Too much salt! On the other hand, that can speed up conversations with the doctor who can just say "cut down on the salt, exercise..."
It is not reasonable for a police officer to watch your door, 24x7...
And it's even less reasonable for a police officer to watch your door, 24x7, from the comfort of their own office... If they're going to do that, they should at least pay a penalty in terms of work...
But a juror publicly talking about what's going on with the jury, outside whatever is obvious in the courtroom, might affect how lawyers for either side present their case.
Oh yeah, that reminds me, I had a TV tuner card for my PC in 2001... But I was living in India and getting cable TV was such a pain. After two months of it the cable broke or the something went wrong with the signal. The cable guy refused to fix it until I paid the bill and I refused to pay the bill until it was fixed, so at an impasse there I gave up with my new, novel experience of having a television (and gave up watching Tu Tu, Main Main to try and learn some Hindi from a funny sitcom without complicated dialogue...)
Actually, not that, I think she failed to consider that there was anybody who wouldn't have been interested in that show, gender notwithstanding... On the other hand, I didn't know 90210 was a chick show, as I never knew more about it than the name and that it was extremely popular...
I haven't possessed a TV since I finished college and moved out on my own in the early 90's...
Around that time I was talking to a cousin of mine and when I mentioned I didn't have a TV, she asked "you don't have a TV? Where do you go to watch 90210?" And I was like "90210? what's that?" which shocked her even more...
TV interests me even less now that the sets are so much more high tech and thinner, I'm just not sure I can stack books on them.
Actually, this might be slightly less off-topic than it would be normally... At the time I'm reading this, Slashdot's little quote of the day at the bottom of the page is actually about apartments:
Yes, I've now got this nice little apartment in New York, one of those L-shaped ones. Unfortunately, it's a lower case l. -- Rita Rudner
Well, I guess I'll just continue to buy my DC graphic novels at my local, neighborhood comic book shop... The place where the proprietors are enthusiasts and chit-chat about the topic when I go in and can offer suggestions and good discussions about them, making a much more pleasant shopping experience.
I make 100% of my income overseas. I live overseas. I still have to pay US income tax on my income (as well as income tax overseas).
I lived and worked and was employed overseas for quite some time. You know you can deduct the foreign taxes you pay from your U.S. taxes? And you can deduct a significant amount of your foreign income from your U.S. taxable amount...
That's hardly new... People have been saying that about any art they don't like or appreciate... Someone probably said that about the first painting of a woman without eyebrows or something...

It'd make more sense for Pandora to allow you to copy another user's musical preferences... what if your tastes change, you split up, etc?
That'd be a bit like opening Pandora's Box...

Or how about MS-DOS 8?
That would be great for a new remake of The Outer Limits so maybe they really can control the vertical and the horizontal, etc...
It is a shame they left the testies out though, laptops can indeed kill sperm (non-permanently of course) :)
Are you kidding? As somone who hates kids and condoms, that's a selling point!

Everyone who is in the digital camera censor business is in it because they have a chip background.
I would've thought they were in the censor business more because they had a chip on their shoulder...
And how long does it take you to rack up 8 text messages?
It takes me a couple of months to rack up 8 text messages...
Something like chicken nuggets would be a challenge, but there's nothing stopping processors from making single-animal ground meat and sausage.
Then they can probably charge more, sort of like single barrel whisky and things like that...
-what did you do
Of course, that one has a universal answer, "nothing, it just stopped working!"
But a juror publicly talking about what's going on with the jury, outside whatever is obvious in the courtroom, might affect how lawyers for either side present their case.
One tool to rule them all: Assembly.
An Assembly Server Pages framework, HTML with embedded assembly for processing stuff?
I got my first capture card around 2000

The way I'd heard it phrased is "to an economist, the real world is a special case."
Then if it's tied with Angry Birds you can just tell it, "Siri, knock down those pigs" and it'll do it.
I'm certain Iran has some areas of outstanding natural beauty, magnificent architecture, foot, culture etc
Foot?
Here's the PC Weenies cartoon about this one...

Apparently, anything can be called art now.
