Err, there are 11 million xbox 360s out there. Thats not failure.
>Profit to loss margin.
MS makes money of licensing and monthly fees. I can give you a 6-blade razor for free, but guess what? Youre paying for refills. This is a non-issue.
>blu-ray
11 million people dont seem to care. The PS3's total sales are half this. If it was such a determinant then we would see a lot more PS3s out there. Honestly, Im expecting blu-ray to be this generations laser disc anyway. Id be surprised if it even takes off, let alone hurts Wii and 360 sales.
>price
Prise is still pretty damn competitive. I own a Wii, yes it was 250 but the 480p cable was 40 dollars (I am using first party prices just like you are doing). Whoops, now I'm at 300 dollars! Second controller and nunchuck? Almost 350. Now its playable but the graphics are so lousy I'm going to trade it in for 360 this weekend.
I dont think it brings anything to the table for them. The higher-ups and bean counters wanted to "own" some part of this new protocol but you cant buy an open standard. So they just bought this firm and put it on the big list of "technologies we bought." Now Jabber isnt some hackey protocol, its a respectable product from a smart acquisition. Someone at Cisco is no doubt getting promoted for wasting money. Perhaps this purchase indemnifies them in some legal way I dont quite understand.
To be fair, they are probably buy some mindshare and expertise, but how hard is it to write IM servers and clients when the protocol is already in use?
I dont think that's it. Its easy to snack while playing an MMO.
I think the unspoken issue here is that America's obesity problem is tied in with the poorer classes. The poorer you are the better chance you have of being obese.
Gamers who can dedicate 4+ hours a day to a game tend to be middle class. They can afford the time, hardware, etc to play these games. A lot of mmo gamers are students and youth generally translates into health. Computer gaming, as opposed to console gaming, has a couple barriers to entry that have been eliminated on consoles.
This isnt a surprised find to me. Id be more interested in a report like this for console gamers. I think then you'd see it fall more in line with our national obesity statistics.
The problem is that all the articles become unnavigable messses of shit trivia and geek mastubatry nonsense. The idea is that this should be a usable reference for a general audience, not a competition against other nerds to crap up articles.
Dont like it? Start your own wiki. Thats the real beauty of the internet. These guys did it and thank god that junk isnt crowding all the pages on wikipedia.
Also, im just sick of reading a general topic, something unrelated to sci-fi and then seeing links like "He also shares the name of a popular Anime character" or "Nuclear aggression was also a topic on this episode of Star Trek."
The deletion policies have really saved wikipedia from becoming a horrible testament to nerd memorization skills and boredom.
My understanding of this is that its trivial for them to produce 3D movies because they are already working in 3D polygons. Ive noticed some kids' movies being released as 3D but only at a few screenings. Everyone else gets the regular 2D version. In other words they will never "require 3D" as you put it, but 3D will be an option for the theater if it so chooses.
I dont think its the glasses. The problem here is that 2D is really good enough for humans. We have a good idea of how things look in 3D space on a 2D screen. Its not such a huge problem for us. The glasses just feel extraneous and gimmicky.
This is also why we dont have 'scent machines' in every home and why people without 5.1 Dolby are able to watch movies without complaint.
Obviously, the state media and politicians in those countries approve of the terms. Who are you to tell them otherwise? I doubt there's a real controversy here.
In some perfect bizarro world perhaps, but not on earth. Im curious as to how the spend, spend, spend GOP plans to pay for this war they bought while at the same time cutting taxes. Oh, thats right, gutting every social service that isnt the military.
So a GOP economist might be thinking "Sure, we're overspent like crazy, but once we get rid of welfare, schools, and social security, we'll be sitting pretty." So to them, this all makes perfect sense. To sane people this is insanity.
Its not. This is just a glaring example of what happens when people who are good at one thing start applying themselves to other things. TBL is good with the ol' hypertext but social issues of truth and bias? Not so much. It reminds me of all those quotes people have of Einstein in their sigs. If they arent about relativity then why bother?
What? That's a third-party add-on. That's like saying "Sure XP can make PDFs, its had that ability for years, you just need to install PDFCreator add-on!"
Joe Software User doesnt know what an add-on is.
Also, we're ignoring the question of trust here. Who verifies this app? Who has done testing? If I can still find traces of browsing and I tell Mozilla, they'll wash their hands of it.
Now, Mozilla is responsible for this feature which means theres a little accountability here. That's a huge change. Joe Shmoe will now be able to see it and click on it. Not to mention the headache of constantly updating your add-ons everytime there's a.1 release.
>The old days Scientific Method of objecttively searching for truth is more or less obsolete.
What old days? When scientists were beholden to Lords and Kings? People who could not only cut off funding with the wave of their hands but people would could have you tried and executed for discovering the "wrong" things?
Or do you mean before that in the ancient world, where great thinkers who spoke out were put to death? Trial of Socrates ring any bells?
You are experiencing whats called idealization of the fictional past. Things are most likely better now (post-enlightenment post-democracy post-civil rights) than ever. I mean, the kids of non-nobles going to university and teaching and publishing disagreeable things?? Scandalous!!
>If all 4 carriers at my local airport were colluding to set prices artificially high, they would be slapped down HARD.
That's because air travel is important to people, thus its important to the government. In that very same airport all the food vendors collude to charge you the maximum for a sandwich. They're not facing anti-trust because people tolerate it.
In the grand scheme of things the price and distribution of music doesnt matter to most people. Its just entertainment. Its like that 8 dollar sandwich at the airport. Life is full of double-standards.

Nope. Doomsaying is a form of extreme vanity. Its complimenting yourself. "I know the world will end regardless of what you eggheads say and it makes sense the world would end in my lifetime because iI'm important!!!" This is a 3rd grade mentality. Most people never, ever grow out of it.
>It would be easy to produce a black and white appliance that ran a single light office suite that lasted for more than 24 hours.
Exactly. Im thinking some kind of ink delivering cylinder that when pressed against "non-e-ink paper" could produce marks which other humans would be able to "read." The life of this setup would last months if not years!
cmvia is command modulated voice interface application. In other words you roll down your window and yell 'MIKE PERRY I NEED THAT FILE.' Eventually a carrier pigeon delivers it to you.
I have some of the world's dumbest users, who click EVERYTHING, and try to install any smiley/weather/junk they get their hands on. They are set as limited users and the machines they use last years without reimaging. I honestly dont know what youre doing wrong. Perhaps your kids are outsmarting you by logging in as administrator behind your back or you didnt do a proper reimage between infections.
Are you kidding? This is slashdot. Usually a blurb contans:
1. Lots of inaccurate information from someone who didnt bother to read the article.
2. Lots of needless editorializing, if outright trolling.
3. A link or two to obvious resources like wikipedia or google news.
4. An unneeded hypothtical question.
5. A link to some blog to up ad impressions.
A copy and paste blurb is most welcome.
I was using national figure, so thats xbox at 19 million worldwide then. Pretty far from a "failed" system.

Yeah, if your band is going to switch from Metal to bland "Modern Rock" then please stop calling yourself Metallica.
Its not "foolish" its a fact. Perhaps you should google before calling people foolish, eh?

Because its an impulsive act for most and there's always rope around. Guns and the proper mixtures of poison? Not so much.

Agreed. Slashdot has hit a new low.

This is just as bad as those malware ads that advertise "YOU ARE BROADCASTING YOUR IP"
>But everyone who supports more government ought to take a look at the incompetence here.
Im one of those crazies who doesnt support more or less government. Just better government.
No, people would think "What? They were almost bankrupt a few years back, I should check the article."
Its incredible that our economy hinges on same lazily written script to sell stock.
