Why not? Let's say Person A is a salesman who brings a company twenty million dollars in business in a year. Person B is a salesman who manages only one million dollars. Sounds to me that Person A is worth twenty times Person B.
Person B is given Person A's sales region. Person A is given Person B's. Person B brings in 20 million now, and A brings in one million. Now is person B worth 20 times more all of the sudden?
But it doesnt matter as much if the actual illicit item/activity is not itself illicit, so long as your actions go to support only that they are illicit. By that I mean if you are caugh selling ziplock baggies of oregano, but are going around telling people its really pot, and charging like it is, they can arrest you for solicitation.
As it applies to the MPAA's actions, they are trying to setup their own sting operation. By requesting an illeagle download, be it the real thing or something that just looks like an illeagle copy of a movie, you are guilty of solicitation.
Wouldn't this then be like the MPAA trying to sell oregano in ziplocks, but calling it pot?
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
except for the extrememly important internet part?
If the patents say "network" or "electronically", there are ways to look at it yet. The mail system is a network. The phone system is a network and electronic.
'Well, as you know, the President objects to the fact that you would be sacrificing one life to save another, and in this instance there is no harm to the embryo.'
I can just see it now. Bush will claim something like, "By sticking to our upstanding morals, we have driven science further than any other generation ever."
Bush is like a broken path in the Internet. Science will route around him.
Yeah, right. So all the images ever created with POV-Ray's scripting language are not art, however images rendered with POV-Ray but composed with a mesh modeler are?
Or are you just saying anything generated by a computer regardless of what amount of human input went in to it is not art?
I agree, and I would go so far as to say the law is unconstitutional. From the document itself, the 4th Amendment:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
How can I be sure of my security if I cannot monitor it? This Amendment is more than just saying they need a warrant to search. It allows me to be active in protecting myself and my belongings.
I wonder if the 14% has any correlation to the number of chinese players who are gold farmers. Gold farming is a system where it doesn't matter much about having the same character name, unlike real gamers who like to develop some sort of reputation for their character (or atleast have people know who they are).
I sent a connect request. Your system accepted my request. I rang your doorbell, and your electronic doorman answered and let me in. I'm not trespassing.
I disagree.
This is more like me leaving my door unlocked, or leaving it open even. Then you come along and see my open door. You know the protocol for entering a house is walking through it's door. So you use that protocol and enter my house. You proceed to sit on my couch and watch T.V., or just stand inside the hallway like an idiot.
I come in, see a stranger and call the cops. I have to believe that there's not a court in the country that would side with you on trespassing charges.
If I'm "too effing stupid" to shut my door or lock it, I'm to blame for your crime?
So the analogy isn't perfect. However, given that the store asked the guy through the correct channels (the cops) to stop using the service and he continued, I don't think we need analogies. After the store asked him to stop, the guy should have had the courtesy to buy a freakin cup of coffee every once in a while and he could have avoided all this.
I just get a little annoyed when people continually badmouth my town. East coasters tend to think LA is just like New York except with snotty movie stars. It's not
VHS tapes are still on the shelves at most, if not all, video rental stores. Most people are just getting comfortable with DVD's. It's normal to find them in your average household, my parents finally bought one 2-3 years ago. Why do we need a new format, much less, two incompatible formats? I hope this fails as much as the MiniDisc did, and I was a buyer of the MiniDisc. Yes, I know there's a niche market for MiniDiscs. I hope at best, that this is relegated to such a market.

Nothing is said about he is planning on monetizing this. Any ideas?
selling your data.
Next they'll consider "/random 1 100" as online gambling.
You're right about the monetary issue. Make the parent do some ammount of community as well.
Just imagine how the computer feels having to listen to an idiot.

So calling the phone company and pretending to be somebody else to get their records is called Pretexting??? I kinda thought that was called fraud.
Back in the day, it was called "Social Engineering" and corporations were not the only ones guilty of it.

two slashes "\\" is nothing. the real PITA begins when you need to do "\\\\"
effing java.
how the fuck is it resisting when he was allowed change it in the first place and they cleaned it up afterwards
The same way a magnet resists being moved from iron. you can push it away, but when you let go, it will be drawn back.
*insert standard analogy disclaimer here*
Some SysAdmin at /. is probably just upset and hacked this story onto the front page.
I'll believe it when my SysAdmin comes complaining on monday that we forgot about SysAdmin Day. And even then, I won't believe it.
Sort of sounds like a type of collage.

Does that mean A Bugs Life is not art?

I wonder if this build was delivered wrapped in hundred dollar bills.
But to be fair, he might never have done that if it hadn't been for those damned ancient Greeks with their abacus...
It's not their fault that god/bob/evolution gave us hands and brains. I say we shove crayons up our noses and cut off our hands!

Sorry man, but we think it's way worse than that.
Cheers, from brooklyn
