  1. Re:If you've a Gamecube... on Best Way To Manage Growing Console Clutter? · · Score: 1

Exactly. After I bought my first wavebird, I sold off my other wired controllers and bought wavebirds for their place. I think the controller plays better, and I really don't care about the lack of vibrating capability.

As controllers go, I found that it was best to built custom holders for each type of controller out of coat hangers and the secure them to the shelves that I keep all of my consoles on. I originally started going this with my n64 controllers about 6 years ago, and it works pretty well with my dreamcast controllers as well. I don't have a ps2 or xbox, but I'm sure you could conjure up something.

  2. Software on So You Think Physics is Funny? · · Score: 1

A software engineer, a mechanical engineer, and an electrical engineer are riding in a car. The car suddenly starts making a funny noise. The mechanical engineer says, "It sounds like a problem with the crank shaft, pull over and we can check it." The electrical engineer says, "No, no, its a problem with the alternator, the spark plugs aren't getting enough voltage." And the software engineer suggests, "Why don't we just pull over, shut off the car, and then turn it back on?"

-No one will ever defeat 3dfx; they rule the 3d accelerator market.

Its so sad. They were my favorite graphics card company, and I always thought that ATI and nvidia blew goats while 3dfx cranked out great 3d accelerators that diamond slapped onto awesome cards.

Two bad my two favorite graphics card companies were later absorbed and eventually died. But I hear that Diamond's at least making a comeback. Hoo-ray!

  4. 20 Years old is nothing... on Need... More... Power... · · Score: 1

My past two apartments were 50 and 80 years old respectively. The 50 year old building had only two outlets per room, but we had a really great circuit (15A), so our only problem was that we ran extension cords everywhere. Our manager was even nice enough to let us drill through the walls and string our own RJ-45 cable for the network.

However, in my second apartment, we had plenty of outlets, it was just that they had only 2-prongs. It was the crappiest of crappy wiring systems. It had 15A that had to also be shared with the refridgerator and A/C. It left something like 6A for the rest of the house. You'll be happy to know that I only blew a circuit once.

  5. Nobody Benefits from this on Shopping Carts Go Wi-Fi · · Score: 2, Insightful

About 10 years ago, a brand new Schnucks (local grocery store to St. Louis Area) installed something similar on its carts. However, it was basically just a portable ad monitor. It was a BW LCD touch-screen that popped up new specials when you moved to particular locations. It sensed your position from overhead sensors, I'm not sure if they were IR or what, but long story short, they didn't stick around for very long. Maybe this system will have more success because of the automated checkout feature, but I really doubt it.
My experience with self-checkout has been that I'm not nearly as fast as the checker that's been there for years and knows the price codes for all my fruit by heart. I tried to do it a couple of times and because the system has to be designed so that a 5 year old can use it, it seems to take twice as long as it would had if I was a super-user.
