  1. Prosecute me if you must :) on Longhorn to Require Monitor-Based DRM · · Score: 1

Obviously you're entitled to your opinion. But let's just be clear that this is not the approach taken by US (or most other nations, AFAIK) copyright law. The entire concept of copyright was based on the idea that content is "different". A book is a product, a CD is a product, a painting is a product. But story, the music, the image, respectively, are not products. They are information. Information can be reproduced with trivial effort. But transcribing a usable, re-usable, distributable copy of the information was, until the advent of the VCR, prohibitively difficult/tedious. Possible, yes, but tedious. What this meant was that few people actually attempted to do such, to circumvent the creator's right of sole reproduction and distribution (AKA copyright). But when they did, there was a legal channel by which the creator could protect his right. "Unfair" forms of reproduction are what copyright was designed to protect. How can an artist make a living from his work if he has to compete with someone else to sell it who doesn't need to spend any time practicing, composing, or performing, and instead can sit and crank out copies all day long. The digital age brought about the triviality of reproduction and distribution of information. Which means that virtually anyone can now do so with virtually no effort, or even technical knowledge. You don't need to buy heavy equipment or expensive ad space in order to copy and distribute. But that doesn't change the fact that each instance of this is a violation of the creator's sole right to reproduction and distribution. Each instance is an infringement of the copyright. But that shouldn't be the final word. One must keep in mind the spirit of the law. Was it ever intended to prevent people from obtaining a copy and making use of that copy as many times as they want, in whatever ways they want, short of copying it for further distribution? Arguably, no. I would argue that any attempt to claim that a consumer should pay for each and every use, or even just multiple copies for different presentation devices, is unabashed money-grubbing. It is equivalent, in my mind, to an artist claiming grounds to sue you for reading his book aloud to your children-- or even just to yourself-- in the privacy of your home. Or an author claiming grounds to sue you for playing his song, on your piano, alone, again in the privacy of your home..... Unless you've paid for the license to do so. I don't think there's a valid argument that this is the type of profiteering that copyright was meant to protect. So the next question is, should we redesign copyright law to serve this purely commercial/economic purpose, as the **AA's seem to want? Or do we lobby to get back to the spirit of the law, and renew the principles of fair use? It should be obvious by this point where I stand, at least.

i think when you talk about games, 3D applications, virtual environments, GUI's etc etc, C++ shines. i think as embedded systems, custom built environments start to grow then C++ might gain some of its popularity back...of course i am sure to some extent C# is gaining more ground...but C++ is not biased on a certain platform. AS Linux flavors emerge and become more popular a language will need to be 'cross-platform' if you will.

can you imagine doing Java with OpenGL? i am not talking about drawing a 3D cube or rotating spheres. maybe you have but i cant imagine that, especially when there isnt much support/help out there for it and when dealing with real time interactive applications, virtual environments etc etc as mentioned above Java fails miserably

i agree with some on here though. i have NEVER needed or honestly wanted to use the keyword 'friend'. to most noobs (friend != ur_friend). also i remember in my data structures class in college doing an assignment related to overloading streams. i guess i can see where you would want to overload this but for me in the past and now it has never been worth the hassle or the work. just easier to use the headers that come with the compiler.

as already noted, templates are a mess, confusing and IMO too prone for errors, such as it seems there is no one or two ways of doing something with templates but unlimted instead. conclusion: c++ is powerful, even though not the most noobish language out there, fast for most people, well documented, online community support, cross-platform and overall provides a good standard.

Yes, I fully expect that the graphics and sound will be awesome. That's FANTASTIC. Yay for pushing the boundries - but lets not kid ourselves here. This is going to be about two giant corporations pulling every dirty trick in the book to try to destroy one another. Personally, I'm slightly more interested in supporting Sony as they actually innovate every once in a while and make some attempt at building standards.

I will say this, though - I'm infinitely thankful that it's Microsoft & Sony doing this than Nintendo for a simple reason; they don't "own" the games. Nintendo has pretty much tied their own rope with their first party crap.

Nintendo simply can not compete with Sony & Microsoft. Either company could buy Nintendo in CASH right now - Microsoft could do so without their shareholders even batting an eye. You're talking about companies that can call a quarter with only $15 billion in sales "underperforming". Both organizations have a history firmly rooted in dumping. They will try to undercut one another into oblivion. Now, Microsoft has a fiscal advantage here, of course. They're hoping for a big payoff when it comes to software licensing and the like further down the road. Sony has a distinct advantage in their relationships with the hardware manufacturers (namely in that they're actually using hardware that they developed / co-developed, while microsoft is using entirely third party parts). Personally, I'm more interested to see how this alters the PC market. Both nVidia and ATI are going to have a lot riding on their respective relationships. IBM is now dipping their whick into both candles (and, indeed, burning from both ends). AMD and Intel have been shut out of the game. We shall see.

guess what, this happened in Jesus time as well. isnt it interested how God of the Bible and Jesus cause so much controversy?? so much hate(on both elite extremes i might add).

Jesus said in the Bible people will hate you because you love me and follow me. He said that His name would always be a stumbling block for many. He also said that I am the way, the truth and the life..no one comes to God except by me. Guess what? that is indeed close-minded. I didnt say it, He did. He says He was the way, no other way..i.e. only ONE way to heaven. No wonder he also said FEW will enter the kingdom of heaven, b/c no one likes close-minded and one sided thinkers. there is no grey with Jesus...either you are black or white. He was referring to asking forgiveness of your sins, asking Jesus to come into your heart and believing that He is the Son of God, was crucified for your sins and rose from the dead. Hell is not only about being with the devil and being hot, tortured forever etc etc.. its about eternal separation from God, i.e., eternal darkness.

some people mention in the old testament about slavery etc etc and how this was supposedly "right" in the Old Testament and not the New Testament. well in the Old Testament, the rules were different in fact, in the New Testament(if you read it and actually try to understand it and not 1 verse or even 1 chapter) Jesus coming into the picture changed everything and changed the rules.

You might still not pick up the Bible and have an open mind and heart about it but just think for a moment...where will you go when you die? think about it. don't you want to have some assurance? this life is only temporary and when you die, short of a funeral and people fighting in the courts to get all your possessions you will be forgotten. so where will you go when you die? If you are right about everything, about Christianity, about Jesus, about everything he taught, about the BIble being wrong and just a stroybook then i will have lost nothing. if you are wrong about Christianity, about that 1 thing, then you would have lost everything, including your soul. i suppose if that is the chance you want to take then go right ahead.

the 2nd gospel Mark was written by himself who was a confidant of Simon Peter, who as you recall if you actually read the Bible was also one of Jesus' 12 Disciples. It is well known that Mark got a lot of his writings of the book from Simon Peter and who none other than Simon Peter would have been the best resource of the real happenings of Jesus and his teachings?

Luke, the 3rd gospel, written by himself also had close ties to Jesus...he writes the gospel according to most of what he got from Mary and also from his walkings with Jesus along with Paul on many occasions. He also records the walk to Emmaus, which was when he and some other walked with Jesus AFTER he had been resurrected, this shows that Jesus was still human even after being resurrected.

The 4th gospel, John was also written by himself as he was an apostle of Jesus as well. Who more would be able to accurately account the walkings and preachings of Jesus as well as his teachings during his lifetime? He also is the author of the 3 Epistles and Revelation as John fleed to the Isle of Patmus.

Every gospel were written by men that all had close ties with Jesus, 2 of which who were disciples and the other 2 who walked with Jesus because of their friendship with some of the Disciples and because of their first hand resources and accounts of which i have described above VERY briefly.

are you telling me that these 4 gospels are not accurate or are you reading from the same BIble that i am reading from? or perhaps you really havent read it but merely at best glanced over it and made your own conclusions instead of studying the Word and really knowing the facts??
