The first thing I thought when I read this article was "This guy doesn't know what he's talking about"
I know for a fact that MS uses imaging software in house, PowerDrive, if I rememeber correctly. My laptop came with a self booting Ghost image installer cd, and its running XP Pro. Its obviously not hard, or impossible, or even slightly difficult.
Anyway.. why would you even TRY to do a file by file backup to some other location? That seems to be what he was having trouble with, but I think the first thing anyone would do when backing up a whole drive or partition is break out the imaging software.
I find this suggestion rather interesting, but think about how its almost always portrayed when it comes up, usually in various sci-fi.. Its generally thought of as evil and twisted. I wonder if this is really the way most people feel, if so.. I don't think it'd ever take off.
Women actually should be heavier than men at the same height, they're generall not because of societal pressures.
I'm a guy and 6'2" and 145-ish.. Heaviest I've been is 150lbs, when I was working out (mostly running and weight lifting) 4 days a week. Some people are just lightweights... All the guys in my family are.
Too bad there IS no root or shell in 7.x.. or 9 or earlier.:)
Any user (unless you're running some add-on, like At-Ease) can do anything to the system. Mac OS prior to X was in no way a multiuser system. It was also fairly secure because there just wasn't anything to break into.
I think your first 3 points are far, far more imminent than your last point. We don't really need to worry about our sun dying for probably another 3+ billion years, depending on how long you think it will take to develop viable inter-steller travel, and assuming current estimates on the lifetime of our sun are correct. I think its highly likely we'll either be long extinct, or have long since left Earth as a rotting corpse.
Sorry, but I think you're quite incorrect. The point I got out of his post was the current Powermac G5's are somewhat unsuited for the given task, and he hopes that they'll be improved upon in this area, for the given reasons in terms of both actual hardware and space requirements. The point you seem to have interpeted is "MACS suck! Nyah-nyah!"
Actually, he's got a pretty decent point.
You want to put as many machines in one place as you can.. Whats better, a mid-tower, or a 1U rackmount case. You do the math.
And unless they got a real special deal from Apple to strip out all that extra space/hardware.. Like those before mentioned DVD writers and Radeon 9x00s, that are entirely useless.
In fact, this is really the kind of thing that people have been saying for years, you really lack flexibility when buying an Apple machine. This doesn't make them poor computers, but it does make them poor choices for certain situations.
Microsoft has said themselves (No, I don't have a link) that third-party drivers cause most of the instability in Windows. Why would they try to disprove this?
Actually, a at least a few big colleges do something like this already. Not necessarily just science, but its the same idea.
At least, I know University of Washington does, and I've seen some big science (astronomy, usually) lecutres on it.
I think for a lot of people, the real reason has always been price. Spending $2000+ on a computer just doesn't appeal to most people.
They just don't want to admit they can't afford it, so they resort to other excuses;)
I'm glad you've discovered that Alienware is expensive.
With a very quick bit of shopping at newegg, you can match the G5 almost exactly (1.8ghz Opteron, DVD-RW, FX5200, 1Gb PC3200, 160gb SATA, etc) for $1455. Some of these choices I question (why on earth did they put an FX5200 in the G5.. sheesh) but thats pretty much as close as you can get to matching the specs. You could get even cheaper if you went with a plain Athlon 64 3200+, and more than likely still be beating the G5s performance, considering the 200mhz advantage.

Don't get me wrong - I own several macs, and I love them - for a long time I *only* owned macs. But price is NOT one of the where they're even competitive.

Sure, but that wouldn't make for much of a movie, now would it.
Or turning off the service. You should have a decent firewall, anyway, though.
That was a different Voyager.

True enough, I'm just fairly pessimistic about the human species lasting long enough to care, at least not if we stay stuck here that long.

Not a suprise, they direction they've been going.

Strange, isn't it? You'd think all the 'more realistic' newer games would have more of that effect, but it seems its just the opposite.

I think he's probably talking about the Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil. Just a guess.
And never tells you about it.. As it probably should be. I can see the source of confusion ;)

I get cool drug company pens from my mother, who is a nurse. That reminds me, I need to drop by and restock.
If that spec is correct, then yes. ADC is just DVI with some extra pins for USB and power.
I dunno, I'd rather sit down and spend a few minutes to fix a software problem than just plunk down some cash... Maybe I'm just cheap. :)
Sorry, but I like to run on quality hardware, regardless of the OS. Its just makes things so much simpler when you KNOW its a software problem.
And the only OEM machine I own is an old Powermac G3 I was given. You really CAN buy quality hardware yourself.
It probably runs with no heatsink, I've got 25mhz 68040s (in old macs) that didn't ship with one.
