They'd stop alpha particles, and depending on how thick they are, they'd probably stop beta particles. Gamma rays though require much much more protection, like meters of concrete, which impedes movement slightly.
It doesn't actually say it will be occluded for 2 weeks behind the Moon, it just says that it is currently occluded and it will be 2 weeks until they can calculate it's course. I assume the need to watch where it's going to predict it accurately.
Now I have noticed, on a family member's HP, that it is printing color even when a page is pure black text. This seems particularly wasteful to me, and when I looked at it, I couldn't figure out if it was a setting, or just fantastically poor design decisions.
Just wait for OpenGL 3.1, I'm not sure when they'll decide to release it, probably mid 2008. Then you'll have DirectX10 features on Linux and Windows (probably FreeBSD/Solaris and MacOS is Apple get round to implementing it).
If you are a spy, and cloaked, you can be made partially visible by being shot or bumping into an enemy. This took me a while to figure out why I was being killed when cloaked.
Actually, SATA is 3Gb/s not 300GB/s. But I agree, it'll probably happen when we get a good, cheap type of non-volatile RAM. I don't think spinning bits of metal and magnets will last much longer.
I didn't die there too much, but I did fail it several (5+) times (lucky I had a save, but it was still cutting it close). I couldn't figure out what was destroying my Magnusson devices. Of course it was those bloody Hunters. I had ditched the car at the beginning, and it was only when I listened to the commentary I found out you could run the Hunters over with it.
More than likely. Basically they're saying "C# didn't garbage collect objects that were still in use!", which is quite obvious. I've been caught out a couple of times by not thinking through which object have references to other objects, and end up leaking memory. Other times I've come across bugs in the JDK where a class refuses to let go of an object, causing a leak (In fact, it was something todo with the focus manager IIRC, keeping a reference to a GUI component that I had disposed of).
I'm so glad I live in the UK w.r.t electrical stuff. A switch on every socket. A fuse in every plug. Those US plugs just look like they are just waiting to electrocute you.
I'm on Windows, on a P4 3.0Ghz machine and 1GB of RAM. Not the quickest, but certainly quick enough. It's the only class it does it on, and it's fine it a type 'gl.GL_' but pauses when I type 'gl.g' and when I press the 'l' after that.
However, I've checked this on my machine at work, and it works perfectly so I may have a bodged install (it was originally just the CDT version, which I upgraded to the Java version).
I started developing a little JOGL app in eclipse over the weekend, and found that it pauses for up to 30 seconds when displaying the code completion for the GL class.
I agree, most games just get the European languages but a quick browse through the Steam site shows Valve are very good with the localisation:
For Half Life 2 and HL2: Episode 1: Languages : English*, French*, German*, Italian*, Korean*, Spanish*, Russian*, Simplified Chinese*, Traditional Chinese*, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Thai
* languages with full audio support
It appears most of their games are like this or have a list like Portal's.
I can change the language on my Steam bought copy of Portal to Japanese no problem. And because it's bought off Steam, I would be able to play it from anywhere in the world.
You will only be region locked if you buy a copy of the Orange Box that is specifically for a country (Russia and Thailand in this case).
I just did a quick test with my Steam bought copy of Portal. I can change the language from English to Japanese and all works fine (except the voice over which is only in a few languages). These are clearly stated on the page where you buy it from:
Languages : English*, French*, German*, Russian*, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Traditional Chinese
* languages with full audio support
Thai isn't there which probably means it isn't available at all.
The only restriction with the Orange Box is if you buy the physical box from Thailand or Russia, then the key can only be used in Thailand or Russia, it states this on the box itself. If you buy it on Steam it'll work any where in the world.
The reason for the Thai and Russian keys being restricted is because Valve sells them cheaper in those markets to help combat piracy. The online retailers who sold the boxes to places outside Thailand did not specify what was on the box to the people buying them.
There is a line spoken by GLaDOS, something to the effect, "I'm the only thing between you and them". Where 'them' is likely to be the Combine. There seem to be many theories floating around, but one of them is that GLaDOS wanted the player to destroy her (or at least appear to have).
Seems to me that Valve have included HL2 and EP1 just so that they will be given to people who don't have them. They will play it, and might buy The Orange Box, to get EP2. Thus giving them another copy of HL2/EP1 who they give to someone else. Continuing the cycle.

I've taken to just calling it just 'American' rather than English.

Hopefully when they (Khronos) release OpenGL 3.1 then there will be a cross-platform way to use the hardware features introduced in DirectX 10.
Of course this means they would need to release OpenGL 3.0, which they're taking they're sweet time over.

DirectX 10 doesn't make up any number in that graph, because Episode 2 doesn't use/cannot use DirectX 10. The Other category is probably DX7.
Actually the Striders are the 3 legged ones, Hunters are the 2 legged ones.

I'm not sure, but it would probably involve a crowbar.
