  1. Shooting Down the Blimp: Lasers on High-Altitude 'Security Blimps' Coming Soon · · Score: 1

Alright, so we won't be able to shoot it down with a conventional rifle, so we should use lasers instead! Some big laser like the ones they are mounting in the front of the 747's to shoot down missles should do the trick.

  4. This is a great way... on Legoland Introduces Wi-Fi Tracking for Kids · · Score: 2, Insightful

for a kid to get freedom from his/her parents to go explore legoland by themselves. False or not, it gives the parents a sense of security that is likely to loosen their hold on the kid so they can really go have fun. I remember going to parks and lands like this but being unable to do what I really wanted to because of paranoid parents over my shoulder at every turn.

There are no real privacy issues here, except I suppose the old slippery slope argument that we are being slowly conditioned to accept radio tracking tags. As it stands though, this development seems pretty harmless.

Whether or not it seems like a reasonable justifcation to you to leave the LUG, he might have genuinely felt that advocating Linux was leading to developers with good intentions being exploited by the military who use it for facilitating their killing. It is newsworthy as it shows good people in the community are getting fed up with being taken advantage of, and having their work used for purposes that go against their ethics.

Alright, so a third of people they surveyed responded to spam... well thats of people who even responded to their tele-survey, which in itself is spam, so the results of this survey are not entirely valid. Many people like myself refuse all telemarketing and surveys, so would not get included in the sample, and these people would also be unlikely to respond to spam.
This survey is less even valid than the usual surveys posted on /. :P

  17. How will I talk to... on MSN Messenger Kickbans Third-Party IM Clients · · Score: 1

I am sure that many of you are in a similar position to me: you use the MSN to keep in contact with many of your friends who are less interested in technology than yourself. Now, suddenly, I'll be unable to contact them online unless I use WINE to run the MS client, or wait around for someone to come up something that lets us log onto the MSN. I'm assuming that this would be, however, illegal organisations such as Cerulean Studios wouldn't be able to sell their product. There's no hope in hell I'll be able to convince any of my less technilogically adept friends to use jabber, or even ICQ (!), since nothing will have seemed to change on their side. I'm currently running some old version of Trillian on WINE, and it is unable to connect. A friend tells me GAIM 0.70 works.

  18. Our future Singaporean overlords? on Global Crossing (Nearly) Sold To Singapore · · Score: 2, Informative

This isn't the first sale of telecommunications infrastructure to an SG company owned by the SG gov't. Optus, the second largest telecom company in Australia was sold to Singtel which the Singaporean government has a 70% stake in, meaning it basically owns it, and I think the CEO is the PM of Singapore's relative. They kept it quiet in the Australian media that Singtel is government owned, and I've spoken to an executive at Optus who's told me that their company is being run into the ground internally. So, the Singaporean government is involved in a conspiracy to take over the world's telecommunications? You be the judge!
