I realize I'm zombying (sp?) this thread, but here's what the WADA chief had to say. There is also the fact that the USADA is the body responsible for enforcing the world anti-doping code in the USA (by an acto of Congress, no less) and all signatories of this code (like the UCI) have to abide by their decisions. I think the UCI is trying to make the best of a bad PR situation, and will quietly agree with the USADA ruling when the spotlight is no longer on.
As for the comments about heart below, it just seems strange that Armstrong would fight all the insinuations about doping so hard, but the first time there is a real trial, he bows out. If anything, this was his best chance to prove his innocence.
Microsoft's radically new UI is so poor that sales are abysmal. So what you're saying is that only Apple should be able to make a sensible UI and everyone else can try to come up with strange ideas (like Metro).
Not really, this is the first set of charges from the USADA. Previous charges were from different agencies and accusations from fellow cyclists (including ex-team mates). I realize that Lance Armstrong is winning the PR battle, which is exactly why he did decided not to contest. Contesting the charges would have turned up too many skeletons in his cupboard.
It is not scientific because it is a lie. USADA refuses to release the actual test results, or substantiate their claim. And, their statement, if you parse it correctly, is fully consistent with a statement of opinion, and not scientific fact.
Lance Armstrong has never failed a drug test. That is a fact.
Had Armstrong contested the charges, USADA would have had to make the results and all of the other allegations against him public. Makes me wonder why he didn't - could it be that it would have placed all of the evidence in the public domain? The federal court of appeals even told him (his lawyers) that he would be have a case after the arbitration if it proved to be flawed, but they could not take action on the assumption that the arbitration process "would be" flawed. Given the fact that Armstrong is known to be such a fighter, it seems strange that he didn't fight through the USADA arbitration. Keep in mind that the World Anti-Doping Agency also agreed with the USADA's actions.
And for those point to UCI, keep in mind that the UCI is as guilty as MLB in turning a blind eye to doping in the sport, until it became a complete mess and a whole generation of players is tainted. They both needed to act sooner and harder, instead they helped foster this culture of doping that is still proving hard to eradicate.
In a lot of ways this reminds of the start of "Macs vs PCs". Apple wants more control, so other manufacturers flock to the second best choice. This results in a whole lot of "hype" for the alternate which ends up winning the battle.
I prefer to support gog.com, since they release games DRM-free. I can download the games I buy as many times from as many machines as I want and keep playing them for life. Voting with my wallet, even.
As I said, a big advantage of.NET is that it doesn't tie you to a language.
You can run more than just Java on the JVM - Scala, Ruby and Python to mention a few. And I'm sure more could be added if there was a need - that's the beauty of open source. So what's the reason you need the.Net framework again?
What he's actually telling you is that the existing encryption is good enough. You really need to spend more time fixing the human problems since that's where most of the attacks come from. He's basically telling that we've reached or are close to the point of diminishing returns, where advances in cryptology (newer algorithms or quantum crypto) can no longer be justified based on the increase in cost for these advances versus the % of attacks on existing crypto.

Apple: down 23% fom their 52 week high
Microsoft: down 30% from their 52 week high

Why look at VA Linux, when they don't even sell Linux anymore? Take a look at Red Hat, which is down only 14% from their 52 week high.
You may want to read G. H. Hardy's "A Mathematician's Apology" for an insight into what drives a mathematician. Hint: it doesn't have much to do with job security.
Islam is a much more decentralized religion that most of us are used to. This means that any two-bit priest can issue a Fatwa or invoke. This also means that just because a few Muslims blew up innocents, the whole religion is flawed.
Islam does have many issues to work out with how they fit into the modern society and the sooner they do this the better for all of us.
Wikileaks lawyers were at the court, IIRC, but were asked to leave. So the court could easily have server the notice to them. Unfortunately, the bank's lawyers took advantage of the fact that few judges have much technical know-how to cause as much damage as they could. Probably just to send a message. Thankfully their strategy didn't work and has in fact backfired.
I'm sure you've heard this before, but have you tried a clean install of Fx? I think it's very likely to be your plugins (Flash/Java) that are the culprits. That's another reason to use NoScript, because it keeps memory usage low (by not loading junk).
Keep in mind that there are areas where Microsoft and Yahoo combined could become a monopoly or at least very large - IM and mail. Almost everyone here is missing the danger in the IM space. With AIM's share dwindling, a combination of Yahoo and Messenger's market share (especially globally) could spell trouble for open protocols (like XMPP). IMHO, that would stifle innovation.
Even in the web mail arena, Yahoo and Hotmail together constitute a majority of web mail accounts. If MS were to introduce additional features but only accessible from IE, it would lead us back into the proprietary HTML hell that we have just barely escaped from.
I wouldn't be surprised if MS want Yahoo not for the search but for something else, and it may not even be IM or web mail.

Better still, use some mouse gestures
I guess this prize is already won, then. See http://www.automobile.com/stanford-and-vw-self-driven-vehicles.html

Use Noscript - it warns you when a URL hijack attempt occurs

If there is prior art that is slightly different, but the changes are something that are pretty simple, wouldn't that meet the obviousness criteria?
Two words: lookup table
VOIP is not illegal in India since 2008. See this press release for more details.

I wonder how difficult it would be to implement a UDP based bittorrent protocol, on the lines of sftp.

Overwhelming market share in the web-based email and (more importantly) the IM market, especially in Europe where AIM has a much smaller market share.

I wish I could mod this "Insightful but depressing".
