Besides, does this guy get to vote in New York State elections now? If not, it's taxation without representation.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Some of my friends are in a simliar situation because they live on the Wisconsin/Illinois border. I live and work in Wisconsin so I pay Wisconsin Income taxes. Some of my friends work in Wisconsin but live in Illinois. Do they pay the Wisconsin and Illinois income tax? No. They pay the Illinois income tax because that is where they live. They do not get to participate in Wisconsin elections (state and local) because they are not a resident.

I agree that crisis is not the correct term for energy price increases however it is becoming a great concern for everyone. I see this concern as a needed factor to promote chip innovation.
I am glad to see the widespread adoption of hybrid cars and SUVs in the United States. By widespread I mean that automakers are actually promoting hybrid technology. In my lifetime (I am 21) I don't think we will find a source of energy that will replace gasoline in automobiles. People cite Hydrogen as a source but most the available Hydrogen production is a byproduct of fossil fuel refining. Currently, solar panels are far to expensive and the production methods require vasts amounts of energy (often more than the panel will ever produce) Of course the majority of the energy used to producce the panels comes from fossil fuels.
Power production from Wind is a risky venture at best for most of the country. There are only a few select locations where there is sustained wind. These locations should be used to their potential. Also, electric only cars will only become accepted if they can recharge in the same amount of time it takes you to fill your gas tank. I drive a Honda Insight. It takes about sixty seconds to fill up and I can drive it in town for 2-3 weeks before I need to fill it up again. I typically get 375 in town miles and around 550 highway miles on a single tank.
I have always been a supporter of nuclear energy however I don't think America is ready for a nuclear reactor under the hood. Besides, the evil dooers could use them for WMDs.
So, right now it appears fossil fuels will continue to be the primary source of energy. I would like to see a cleaner alternative but am glad consumers finally have a choice. Like everything, burning fossil fuels is ok in moderation. Our problem is that the earth cannot absorb our output fast enough. This is just my opinion of course.
I would hope the chip designers would give the consumer and business alike an alternative. Design desktops and servers to lower their voltage to the CPU when the system is idle. I have an Asus board with an Athlon64 3500+ that has this capability and I use it. I am sure there are many servers out there sitting idle yet running at full power. Hopefully businesses will realize this and buy technology that is adaptive based load.
Here's an idea I have been thinking about since we are on this subject. Why not have a system that acts as a cluster but only the needed nodes are used. For instance, you are running a website. Most of the time a single server can handle the load perfectly. Some jackass posts a link to your site on the frontpage of/. Your server gets hammered. A solution could be load balancing but that usually requires that all of the nodes be online all of the time. What if processing nodes could boot almost instantly using flash memory or RAM disks from a powered off state? The master node would request processing nodes to power up based on need and power off when not needed. Instead of hard drives, RAM disks would be used. A small amount of voltage would be supplied to the RAM at all times.
Of course you could buy servers with CPUs that are effecient. You would still be wasting energy during idle times.
These of course are my original thoughts. Companies should not take them from me unless of course they thought of it first. In that case, please do not sue me for thinking creatively. Perhaps you could hire me. Perhaps not. Either way, don't be an asshat. Turn off the (light/computer/whatever) when you are not using it. The energy companies operate on demand. If there is less demand, they will produce less energy, and we will all benefit.
...people would be just better implementing a policy of "get shit done and do it right".
Today, October 21, 2005, marks the beginning of a new era for my company. The "get shit done and do it right" era is here and now.
You should seriously consider writing a book and selling it to the HR asshats. Just today I had to sit in a meeting and listen to the same "we need to focus on the objective, people. You are all important members of the team."
Perhaps during our next "brainstorming" session (aka, nap time) I will introduce the new "get shit down and do it right" policy. I'm sure it will over well.
I was thinking along the same lines. Here is a business model I think would work.
1. Install a client app. During installation you are asked how much hard drive space you would like to dedicate to media content. The more space you dedicate the greater the incentives. More on this later.
2. When your computer is idle, the client downloads content to your dedicated space. Most of the space would be dedicated to new releases (let's say 60%) The other 40% is dedicated to popular, older movies and movies you may want to watch based on previous downloads. This content (probally protected with DRM) is not your personal collection but a warehouse. You will always be aware of what content is stored on your computer. If you do not approve of something you can remove it (R rated movies, ect.) Content will be refreshed based on popularity and your connection's ability to download new content.
3. You are rewarded based on how much data you seed and other factors. The price for a new release is $4.00 or 4 points. Let's assume the average movie is 2 GB in size. Not DVD quality but very good. You get 1 point for every 2 GB you upload. You get additional points when the dedicated space on your hard drive is filled with content. Let's say you allow 40 GB of content to be stored on your 300 GB drive. You get 1 point for every 5 GB of data stored. You would only get points on the initial space filled. In my system you would get points based on how long your client has been open and uninterupted for 30 minutes or less. Let's say a half point for a 24 hour period. There would be a limit on how many points you get using this method.
Points could be redeemed towards movie viewings, physical goods, and cash. 2,000 points would get you an iPod Nano or you could redeem your points for cash: 10 points = $2.00
I think this system is a good balance. People who do not want to leave their computer on and distribute content can download media without a discount. Users who leave their computers on 24/7 would get rewarded. My computer is on all of the time and is generally idle. I do run SETI @ home when I am away but it really doesn't use all available resources: network and hardware. A system as described above would reward me for the use of my resources. I could still run SETI because that utilizes the CPU and the media app would utilize my cable modem.
Just my thoughts.
Oh, the app would be cross-platform, FOSS, and the media would only allow the bare minimum of DRM in media files to please the media giants. I guess my plan will never happen. Oh well.
now take AOL, something already crappy. i can't possibly imagine what microsoft can do it. maybe this time around people will actually shy away to something else.
Or AOL becomes so bad it gets better.
disclaimer: If you think about that for more than two seconds your head will explode.
You go to the car dealer and you see a car you like. The car costs $45,000. Wow, you think.
You have a friend who works for the company. You ask him to see what the total cost of materials of that model to the company is. He tells you that it costs (insert company name here) $5,538 in materials for that model.
You call the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. When making the complaint, you failed to take these factors into account:
1. R&D costs. Millions (and in some circumstances) billions of dollars are spent before the first sale of every model produced.
2. Labor costs. Robots can only do so much. The rest is done by humans which are union members and demand decent wages and benefits (as they should.) From the GM website, "We employ about 317,000 people worldwide and had payrolls of $20.9 billion in 2003." "As the largest private puchaser of health care in the U.S., we spent $4.8 billion in 2003 on health care for employees, retirees and dependents."
Although technically not an expense, auto companies must finance (or obtain financing) for new plants often costing over a billion dollars each.
5. Legal fees
More than a team of lawyers (more like a herd), auto compaies know how to cover their asses and avoid major legal problems. Every decision from the size and location of a cup holder to the angle of airbag deployment is reviewed by lawyers.
6. Marketing
Buying ads in every magazine and hiring marketing professionals adds up. It is not as much as salaries and benefits but must be taken into consideration.
7. Profit!!!
The entire purpose of a company is to make a profit. Without profit, what incentive would there be to produce cars? None.
Most companies are not evil. They just want you to buy their product. It is as simple as that.
Yeah, real professional. If Mommy won't give you a lollipop, throw your toys out of the pram.
My logic here has a point. You clearly don't see it since you posted AC. BTW, what is a pram?
If the employer does not want to GPL the code, you must assume they will be selling or distributing the program in the future. The company would then need to make the code available to be compliant with the GPL.
It's time to produce something new with new seals, gaskets, and gap filler, and maybe a satelite dish. (Weather shouldn't affect their picture up there being so close to the satelites themselves.) If they plan on putting a man on Mars they've got a long way to go with those shitty shuttles they're still nursing along.
I see reusable spacecraft as a step backwards at least in the case of the Shuttle. After using the Shuttle it must be inspected, reinspected, reinspected, reinspected.....replace tiles, replace parts, prepare for reuse....and the list goes on.

We (the US) add systems that check systems to prevent something from happening. A complicated and reused system scares me more than a simple, new system.
