I am just going though some training and one of the hot points is understanding your customer. Making something more difficult for customers (home users and companies that do tech work) is not one of the moves known to improve market share and is in most industries considered a bad move.

  4. Legal Thing on German Search Engines Self-Regulating · · Score: 1

This just sounds like a way to work together to get the illegal stuff out faster and with less work from each company. I bet this results in a cost savings for each group involved. Instead of one group at each company doing the work, one group overall does it and the results could potentialy be faster and more accurate.

I hope this never happens for a show just because of the standard it would set.

  15. decision making on Competition to Build the Space Shuttle's Successor · · Score: 3, Interesting

This does show a fundamental lack of decision making going on in many branches of government leadership. No one wants to put forth a goal and be the leader who didn't make it. So, they don't make a goal so that way they just keep the status quo as long as they can and hope the next guy deals with it. No one or agency wants to look bad so to them it's safer to not do anything at all.

  16. I can see.... on Competition to Build the Space Shuttle's Successor · · Score: 1

I can see the underdog putting up a good fight as most government contractors are bogged down under "red tape" that causes prices to sky rocket. If they run lean on overhead BS they have a shot. 18. Re:Tivo's popular because of non-technical people. on TiVo to Offer SDK · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually, after RTFA, I disagree. I think the purpose of releasing a SDK is to foster new innovations. From the article:

The company is out to show that the TiVo service "is much more than about DVR," said Howard Look, vice president of application and user experience at TiVo. "All the great ideas don't have to come just from us."

The strategy isn't to address a small community of developers and techs, but rather to generate functionality that can be developed by the Tivo people and pushed to the larger/non-technical population.

I highly doubt it. Popularity comes from making it easy to use and marketing/brand naming. Microsoft, AOL and others have shown that to the average joe six pack it's not about innovation.

That many people still see that you have to use Microsoft Products or that alternatives aren't out there for certain products that are easy for your average joe 6 pack to use.

Alternatives are targeted at the tech savvy and are not marketed well enough. M$ is a marketing machine. Most of our folks have trouble programming a VCR clock. I bet it's very true.
