Kuro5hin has a handful of admins, actually, although we generally tend to stay behind the scenes. However, when it comes down to it, and I'd say this is the case with pretty much any site, the keys are ultimately in the hands of one person.
K5 and Scoop were direct responses to dissatisfaction with the way things were done on Slashdot. These days, there's a lot of dissatisfaction with the way things are being handled on K5. Who's gonna step up to the plate this time around?
I think the route ain't bad except for the glaring mistake they made not running all the way to the airport. I can't figure out why hotels south of the MGM Grand (including Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay - 3 of the biggest hotels in town) aren't covered.
They've already been covered for a while now by a tram that runs between Mandalay Bay, Luxor and the Excalibur. More info here.
Like the idea of Las Vegas? There are all kinds of IT jobs seeking your skills there.
Minor quibble.. actually, Las Vegas probably isn't the city you want to be in if you're searching for work in the industry. We've gone through quite a few dotcoms that brought in people from all over the country and then collapsed with the rest of the em. With Xuma going under and PPro laying off their staff, that's even more unemployed workers to the fold. Casinos can only hire so many (although it is a bit easier to find IT/admin type positions out here because of em). Trust me, unless you are coming to work in the service or construction/development industry, Vegas is fairly dry these days.:/
Actually, if you want to see the stories portrayed in Bay's Pearl Harbor, rent Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and watch it back to back with Tora! Tora! Tora!... That way you'll get the Pearl Harbor attack, followed by the Doolittle raid with the B-25s.
And finally, if you want to watch something resembling the historical accuracy of Bay's Pearl Harbor, go rent The Final Countdown.:]
That may be, but Sprint isn't the only bunch of fools in the telecom business there. Mpower Communications (formerly MGC), a CLEC serving Las Vegas, has a reputation for worse service than Sprint... I've even heard of such problems as employees blundering into racks and knocking T1 connections loose.
Oh yeah, Mpower isn't the shiniest penny in the stack either, but I went with them over Sprint last time I had a phone line installed. I never had any problems with them, but then again, I've never done business with em in a commercial setting. It's odd, in every industry aside from development and entertainment, Vegas really does seem to breed mediocrity.
Hell, even the dotcoms in Vegas are pretty shady. The city isn't really a stronghold for tech work these days, especially design work, although an IT job within the casinos isn't too hard to pick up.
And re Sprint, I wouldn't be surprised if someone were mucking about with their lines, they are notorious out here for their lack of internal communication and being clueless about their own systems...
The Cluetrain Manifesto book mentions what sounds like the seed to your idea.... As far as I know, a fully transparent company is still just a concept, at least at the level you are proposing..
A company such as that would be a blast to work for or be a customer of, and the concept would hopefully generate a lot of noise to give you eyeballs to start with and a boost in your particular field. (hell, send me a note when you start looking for designers...)
However, if you try it, please please back it with a strong business plan...("Okay, now that we know how the company will work.. what're we gonna sell?") because it'd be shame for a company based around such a cool ideal to keel over simply because there wasn't a need for the company to exist in the first place..
Without the aide of chemicals? Three working days...finally crashed out after coming home from work the third day.. It was odd, I'd start to grow very tired during the day, and then every few hours a wind would kick in.. I also had quite a bit of stress at the time, and was working with a new job, so that may have contributed to it..(and no, I dont recommend staying up several days in a row during your second week of work at the office..:]..)
Driph "Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.

[(quoted from Bruce Perens IRC Interview) "Q: If we release the Slash code, will you paint your car yellow? (Submitted by roblimo1)
A: If slashdot releases the slash code as Open Source, Roblimo can drive his limo to LinuxExpo New York, on Feb 2nd, park it in front of the Javitz Conference Center, and I'll pop out of the sun roof and wave signs at people saying that "Slashdot code is now open source", and in general make a spectacle of myself. ]
Well now. I believe we can all forget the bantering concerning politics and reasoning behind this release. The above statement is validation enough in itself.
Keep a laptop in the bathroom. Sit down, read a few webpages while you are ah, doing your thing.. Finish up, flush the toilet, and click on over to [patent pending] afterbath.com to release a fresh springtime smell of your choice. No more fumbling for the deodorizer, no more stinky bathrooms.
Oh sure, kill my moderations on this interview by forcing me to reply..:]
As far as recent pop physics books go, check out The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory, by Brian Greene. It was released in 1999, I believe.
I've just started reading the book myself, and so far it is a great read... if anyone here picks up a copy, send me an email, it's always good to have someone to discuss these things with.. __________________________________________ ___________________
I've always been a big fan of Don Martin's. Those are some good looking and comfortable shoes.
Seriously tho, that is sad to hear. He and Sergio were a couple of the best Mad cartoonists. Time to pull out a few dusty old copies of Mad and have a read..
He is referring to the tubes you find all the time at raves and such, or for parent to find their kids... you should be able to find them just about anywhere, just ask for glowsticks...
No, they arent refillable.. hmm, we've never broken one in half, to get at the guts...not sure what they are made of...
The following little bit is from an email conversation with the webmaster of harrybrowne2000.org I've had as a result of this article.. Interesting, and pretty funny. Nice to see a political party with a sense of humor.
> FYI, Harry has be involved with PCs from the beginning, wrote his own > programs in Basic in the Early Years, invented the Internet (no... that > was Al Gore!), and scorns my Macintosh. That last item should endear him > to the vast majority of Slashdot readers."
You asked the exact question I entered the comments area to post.
I've always leaned towards a libertarian ideal, but have never voted for the party in the past. This year I am changing that, and registering as a member of the party to boot. If the party can do this right, they should be able to grab a large portion of the tech crowd, because I believe our ideals are very similar to those of the party.
One thing that makes the Libertarian party stand out is their party stance. If you vote for a libertarian, you are voting for the Libertarian party, and what it stands for. That's something you can't say with the Republican and Democrat candidates.
Here's an idea..
What are the chances of getting a Slashdot interview with Harry Browne? I'll bet that he would be one of the most accessible of the candidates, and would be a good foil to the information provided in the above article about the Rep/Dem internet opinions..
I've noticed that comments tend not to wrap with no horizontal scroll bar when viewing them with IE 4.5 on the Mac OS.... When I'm using that browser/OS combo, I've got to open each thread tier in a new window to be able to read those comments...fairly frustrating..:]
I was wondering when someone was going to mention Austin. I'm currently here in town from Las Vegas for the holidays with my girlfriend on a two part mission...meet her family, and to check out what the town has to offer if I move here.
I am definately moving to Austin. The only things I think I will miss from Vegas are the ability to buy anything at any time of the night and the lack of Cedar trees. Aside from that, the people out here are amazing, you can actually walk from one place to another(in Las Vegas you have to drive everywhere,) the climate is nice, and green plants and trees are a welcome sight(albiet seen through puffy eyes.. allergies are something I'll have to get used to...)
I figure it'll be about two-three months before I can make the move, giving me time to save up a bit of cash, and find a decent place and job.
So, if anyone knows of any cool lil startups or lighthearted companies within Austin interested in a web designer/admin or mac os guy, send me a note..:]
No trusty adventurer should leave his/her home without one.
As I was convinced by my girlfriend to travel to Austin for New Years away from my native Las Vegas, any y2k planning I've done has gone to moot(well, aside from "Get the hell out of Vegas.")
Now my main dilemma is whether we'll jump into the masses for A2k or find a lil club or house party somewhere off the drag to celebrate... ____________________________________ _________________________
Actually, www.papercomputer.com is the site I was refering to, and I believe that is Jim's. At least Rob posted it as so, and the contact address on the site matches the address given as Jim's email...
I agree, the website does need quite a bit of work.
I also believe his idea has a lot of merit.
Unfortunately, I do not have the money to invest in the project, but I can contribute something. I am a web page/kiosk designer, and, if Jim is interested, will volunteer to redesign his webpage for free. The page and content won't require much complexity, so it's something I can complete in my offtime without any serious loss of hours.
Jim, if you are reading this, feel free to email me and we can talk about giving your site more of a professional look.
Good luck!

Good points. See my post below for my personal likes and dislikes.. You've got to wonder if some third party is going to pop out of the woodwork with a browser one of these days.. I've heard a lot of good things about icab..Opera had a buzz for a while.. we'll see..
Now on to the tasty slightly offtopic part of your post..
I agree with your opinion on how companies seem to be viewed on Slashdot... a lot of the mentality, in my opinion, stems from the basis of what Linux stands for for a lot of people...The underdog rising above the megacorporation.. and often, I agree with these sentiments..many companies just "go bad" once they are huge..or they are forced to deal with a much larger consumer base, and instead of serving a niche very well, they now serve a mass consumer market decently... so each one of us is going to find small companies that seem to fit our particular needs to a greater degree...
As far as large companies I personally really like.. first offhand is Cisco... and I guess Adobe would be considered a large company, in its market.. and a slight nod to Apple..they waiver, but usually come out positive in my opinion..(I'm really looking forward to OSX)..
Out of curiosity, anyone know what happens if you never bother to return the recalled battery after you receive the replacement?
K5 and Scoop were direct responses to dissatisfaction with the way things were done on Slashdot. These days, there's a lot of dissatisfaction with the way things are being handled on K5. Who's gonna step up to the plate this time around?
Then you'll be glad to hear that the Classic Gaming Expo starts tomorrow. :]
