Yes this happens quite often in particular with building codes. I find it rediculous, but what I believe happens is that a company hires engineers to write a book of codes publishes it and then states/counties whatever governing bodies then vote to adopt the codes in the book. Which is good if you ask me, who do you want writing building codes? engineers or politicians? The problem then comes up that yes the codes are copyrighted.
How do you solve the issue? Laws should be a matter of public record and should be freely accessible. However the people creating the codes need to be compensated. I suppose the Government could have its own engineers write building codes, I'm not sure thats a good idea though.
Give it some time... I'm not a huge console gamer, but I plan on getting a wii once its feasible with out much effort (the price will probably drop by that time too ). I have a feeling this system will appeal a lot more to the casual gamers, and the casual gamers aren't going to be fighting with people over the 4 in stock. I really hate the limited supply bs, and I think its just a ploy to build hype.
It couldn't be that hard to set up a website to do just that could it? Share friend codes? make lists based on geographical regions.
I don't own a wii so I don't know whats involved in the friend codes. But I should think you could trade them online.
A-Farking-men.
If I'm productively working on something and accomplishing things 8 hours, 10 hours, 12, hours fly by. If I don't have a task accomplishing very little, 6 or 7 hour days can be a drag. Even considering that you're getting paid the same for either. On the face of it, surely wouldn't you like getting paid to surf the web for 8 hours more than doing "work" ? I have met very few people who would prefer that, sounds nice but just isn't the case.
"They benefit equally from say roads and justice as anyone does."
Nonsense. You really think Sam Walton or the owner of walmart or any large corporation that makes use of trucking benefits from the interstate freeway system the same as I do? The justice/police officers needed to protect their investments is the same as it is to protect my little condo and car?
According to that site I'm in the top 1% (barely) supposedly the 52 millionth and something richest person. According to the FTA attached to this thread I may or may not be in the to 10% but probably right around there. I certainly didn't feel rich growing up (don't feel rich now), but its all due to being born in the USA not b/c I worked harder or longer or even smarter than the rest. I don't loathe myself... but it is depressing for anyone with a conscience.
Yes?
seriously what moral justification do we have? those that benefit most from the system in use should pay the most to support that system? How's that sound? I would wager anyone with more assets is making more use of the infrastructure maintained by the commonwealth and should pay more than someone with less.
In your example the person making $400 is still wealthier. His/her food/housing costs may be much higher but still not all costs are relative. An i-pod in the good ole USA is still going to cost roughly the same here as it will in say India, same with an automobile. Your typical fast food worker in the USA making 12-16k a year can reasonably afford a car (especially if they live with mom and dad stil). A fast food worker (or the equivalent) in India is not going to afford a car (or even an ipod). A programmer in India making 12-16k a year might afford a car, but still probably wouldn't buy one.
The cost of somethings are extremeley elastic other things not so much.
And what exactly does this law enforce? Sites only hosted in Sweden? Sites being viewed by swedish people? What good is such a law? How does Sweden enforce it? What if a company lies on their notification? who is going to catch it?
Wow, thats sad... I went to a relatively small school in ohio. In our OS class we built an OS. Something that simulated reading/writing to a file system. We had to take a CEG course where over the course of the quarter we built a simple cpu (using simulation software). In our concurrency class we wrote a simple http server. None the classes were ever listed as Java 101 or any similar thing (except independant studies classes).
...and I took a class that attempted to do something similar but it did not really do the concept justice. We weren't graded on the final project at so much as our design and collaboration (team project). What I think they need is some sort of "practical" class. My first/second real job (hah I graduated when the bubble burst) so these were "hired to tag/QA" and "oh you program and have a BS in CS too? you can help the software engineers" type jobs that paid about what I made managing a pizza restaurant. Let me tell you how frustrating it is working with people getting paid 3-4 times as much as you who are writing code in notepad and inable to configure/run a server (Tomcat) nor did they have any idea what version control was, but they had MS's in CS (same school as myself and mostly the same classes).
I really think they also need a class to explain software licensing... as the same people wanted to use code licensed under an "academic" license in a commercial product. But a class to introduce version control, build tools, deploying/setting up web servers and even IDE's etc should be mandatory. Maybe a rundown of what's freely available too.
Seriously? do you really think "botnet spammers" are unemployed? I'd guess not or if they are that they are making a lot more money spamming/running botnets than any legit job would pay. If someone has the skills/knowledge/drive and lack of ethics to do that do you think they are going to take a run of the mill IT job? If yes, then it probably would be in addition to their illegal activities.
I don't/won't download pirated items not so much b/c I'm honest but simply because I don't want any viruses/trojans/ or some kids crappy rip of a song. Besides there are cheap alternatives, emusic, audio lunch box, bleep.com alternately lots of labels (at least smaller ones) often offer mp3 sales from their own sites. Why steal when I can get a song for 25 cents? At that price I often don't mind paying twice to avoid trying to hook my turntables up to a pc. Hopefully more labels/artists will catch on to what people want (drm-free music) and the selection will get better, but that won't happen if people don't support these services.
Now imagine that computer programming was a highly unstable profession, where any project you worked on could get canceled at any moment, and in any case, once you hit your 40's, you would cease to be hot and hip and might never work again--which means you'll be living off your software "residuals" for many years to come.
Why would one have to imagine? Isn't this the case? I suppose maybe at 40 you don't cease to be hip in the programming world, but if you don't keep up with whatever tech its the same and could happen when you're 25 or 35 or 55 and we don't get residuals. Although I thought some programmers or designers earned royalties? is that only in games? Or is it even in games? Are royalties anagolous to residuals?
That sounds extremely cool, do you have a website? I've often thought a mmo that worked around p2p and user generated content(scripting) would be nice. Although a hackers dream... though maybe if the game revolved around hacking... like some sort of cyberpunk mmo.
I thought I would be the only person on slashdot to know that. I have that shaman cd laying around somewhere. Nice Nick btw.

I'm sorry but you're wrong. Yeah, so I bought my gf(not a slashdot-geek) an Ipod for xmas last year My brother (also not a slashdot-geek) figures he would be helpful since I bought my gf an Ipod and get here some giftcards to Napster (why Napster and not Itunes I don't know he didn't tell me his plans). Right there are two people who care about compatibility and realize its an issue.
I've always thought 2nd life seemed like a cheesey mmorpg with no compelling rpg aspect. However when looked at as chat room on steroids or even a moo/mud, my interest in piqued. Not that I need another time waster like vrave/spacebar was for me in and around my college years, still when I played EQ post college I always thought mmorpgs would be great if the users could script/program things and it appears you can do this in 2nd life. Now that I've learned the account is free and I have a weekend to myself the only thing keeping me from trying this is... my windows/gaming pc died during a recent move. My linux box survived aok, I'm finding less and less reason to try and resurect my XP machine. What kind of OS does the free client run on?
Doesn't this highlight another positive for OS? No seriously, so the lead developer is arrested/killed/in a coma. This means the project *is* not dead, someone somewhere can pick up where he/she left off. If it was closed source, and the lead developer was more than just a cog in a large corporation, who could/would pick up the slack? The source code could conceivably being floating in legal limbo until the affairs are settled. Or am I just being myopic?
Am I the only one who was thoroughly unimpressed with Heroes? I realize one must suspend disbelief for scifi (its the hallmark of the genre), but when it comes to the characters and what motivates them I expect some realism. Thats just pisspoor character development. The guy who has a brother running for political office runs into his HQ and starts babbling that he thinks he can fly... seriously? They didn't try to hint he was retarded ever. Would anyone behave that way? As for Lost I'm not sure how I feel anymore... it has me up and down thinking its good then thinking it sucks. I'll probably watch all of this season anyway. I just finished watching "Dead Like Me" of course I became a fan after hearing it was cancelled, but at least there were two seasons instead of just one.
That man is one of my few heroes. Normally I'm of the opinion that I'm doing the world a favor/all the charity I can afford if I'm taking care of myself and not sponging off others. Call it low self-esteem, call it selfish-loutish or anti-social behaviour. I think I'll have to go and order what few books of his I don't have, maybe buy a few I already have and make them this years xmas presents.
When I went to college I spent about 8-9 years to get my Bachelors... I spent a lot of time going to parties (all through out the mid-west). I ended up with about 30-40 more credit hours than I needed (about two quarters worth of classes), lots of creative writing and psychology classes. Sometimes I wish I had graduated earlier, and had more years experience. I occasionally meet folks my age with almost 3x the work experience as myself. I think how much more money they're making and how much more money they made before the dot com bust, but then I think of all my memories and how priceless they are.

Why is that? Because it was used as a scientific basis for racism.
Ok, Sounds to me like the term was misused back then...

I'm clearly not using it in that fashion (nor have I ever heard it that way).
So let me be clear... you're saying I'm bastardizing the use of a term that was bastardized when it was first created? To mean something (that AFAIK) would be somewhat correct according to the etymology (I'm trying to use it explaining the sense that social groups/organizations evolve into the manner that is most fit through random mutations), and often others mis-used the term in this manner?
Why can't we just drop the older misnomer that doesn't seem to be in use and apply the term the way I have?
I'm clearly not discussing any issues regarding race. I think the context I used the term gives a pretty clear Idea of my intent. Talking about how an organization or society has evolved how that equates to racism, I have nota fucking clue.

So yeah.
