  1. Re:Long overdue? It's in the wrong sales channel on Thinkpad X60 — the Tablet Goes Ultraportable · · Score: 2, Insightful

Color me cynical but when I hear something is long overdue I wonder if it's been thrown together quickly out of desperation. This model or models which check in at 4+lbs are not ultraportable. One would think that with a smallish screen it would come in a little lighter. Lenovo has been doing quite well, so I don't think this could be called a desperation move. 4+lbs is a bit hefty but you could always use the 4 cell battery which allows the unit to come in under 4 lbs. On the screen, this is certainly not smallish for an ultra-portable - average perhaps. I'm willing to accept the extra heft in return for the durability of the materials used to construct the tablet.

I have to wonder how they're going to support a consumer model like this out of the corporate channel since obviously there are zero corporations out there who are going to stock their inventories with this. Although I've heard some horror stories regarding the standard "depot" service, I've also heard a tot of positive stories. (See the thinkpads.com forums for some firsthand accounts.) Also keep in mind that the average Joe care also order 9x5 NBD service for additional $. (I believe this may be handled, at least in the U.S., by the same service which was used before Lenovo became involved.)

And of course it needs a docking station and massive audio. It has an optional dock. Massive audio? Are we still talking about ultra-portables? ;-)

Confusing NGE with something entirely different? While a number of anime shows have been labeled "harem anime" over the years, I don't see NGE this way at all. I can't think of a single character who "fawns over" the central male character.

Yes, it would be nice if neutrality could guarantee happiness. Take a look at Belgium's history for an example of how bad things can go while attempting neutrality. I think the U.S. will be in a damned if they do, damned if the don't situation as long as they are recognized as the one world "super power" remaining.

Python, on the other hand, simply works. Sure, it doesn't have a standard GUI toolkit (although wxPython is pretty much the de facto standard now...), but it does everything I need it to do.
Actually, it's Tkinter, if only because it has been packaged with Python for a long time (since the beginning?). However, wxPython is very popular, and tends to look much better cross-platform as it uses native controls.

I'm a DBA who is responsible for about 20,000 lines of stored procedure code that I did not originally write, and I still think they are a bad idea.
And this is a surprise? I'm migrating 591 stored procedures, none of which I wrote, to a different flavor of database server at the moment. As you can imagine, this gets old pretty quick. However, IMO the performance benefit of having pre-compiled query plans dramatically outweighs the downsides of using stored procedures.

Considering that one can buy a stand-alone DVD/CD/CDR player with remote for $50 these days, I'm not sure why people feel compelled to purchase the DVD remote. The DVD player / remote situation with the XBox has always been a bad joke, at best.

I feel that the wiki aspects of it will get used more than a stand alone wiki (in my group) as they'll be interfacing with it regularly anyway for the bug tracking aspects.

It's written as a Python CGI app, which uses ClearSilver for templating and the Subversion python bindings to surf the repository.
