They know that their children are no more "pure" (neither they are expected to be) than the parents themselves. I'd say that in fact this is a huge problem with our western civilization - we expect everyone (but us, of course) to be ideal and pure in thoughts and deeds. We can easily justify whatever stupid, ugly things we do, but we severly lack the understanding and cannot condescent (sp?) to other people's actions.

Second issue is that they have _other_ taboos than we have here. You see, boys have testicles and girls have boobs - that's completely natural and no secret to everyone. But here it's a taboo somehow. Watch "Heisei Tanuki Kassen Ponpoko" for example - it's a cute wonderful movie (anime) for kids and causes no problems out there (in fact, it scored greatly at the box office). But there's no way in hell it could be shown publically in US, most of Europe, of for example, Russia, because male tanuki have them balls clearly visible all the time and use them for some magic things. Sure, if I had watched the show looking for how the episodes linked together logically, I might think it was a bad show quickly. But it's all about the characters.

Personally, I thought Bebop's ability to captivate your attention with a character in less than an hour was amazing. I don't think action by itself really defines how exciting a series is - consider Dragonball (Z/etc.), where the entire series is "action", but most of the show is actually spent allowing the characters to power up for their next massive, yet remarkably ineffective, attack. Looking for a "correct interpretation" is usually a good way of missing the point entirely. You may find yourself getting so hung up on the symbols that you lose sight of the meaning that is there.

The symbols are not the point. The symbols are there to evoke a degree of familiarity and connection to that symbol's meaning, *not* to imply a direct connection to that symbol. Using such symbols is a way of saying "I know I'm not the first one to say all of this, but..." In my experience, knowing this helps decipher a lot of otherwise veiled meaning in all kinds of art, even if you're not familiar with the sources of the symbols.

Some people will try to imply that you are stupid for not seeing it the way they do, and list off a hundred interpretations that may or may not have any basis in reality. I am definitely not trying to do this, and I apologize if anything comes of that way.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with "not getting it". I was 14 when I first watched NGE, and I can't say I really understood a damn bit of it, but it sure was fun watching robots fight with giant space monsters. I didn't know what I was missing.

Now, at 22, being much more educated, informed, experienced, and mature (and yet, still posting on Slashdot!), I find much more substance to most art that I take in, including the anime that I used to just watch for the visuals.

All it really took in the case of Evangelion was some familiarity with psychoanalytic theory -- the basic Freud and Jung stuff you could get in any Intro to Psych course or in any book by or about them[1] -- and an awareness that the Judeo-Christian symbols lean heavily on the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic sources that most people aren't familiar with. (That is, it isn't, as some people assume "straight out of the Bible". Again, they're just symbols being used to describe something beyond themselves; it doesn't really matter where they came from if you get what they mean.)

Familiarity with these things revealed a lot more about the artist's intent and the meaning behind the story that I hadn't noticed. Now, the meaning itself isn't "new", and rarely is in
art; that's not the "profound" and admirable part. It's the fact that they were able to tell a meaningful story using giant robots and space monsters and warm water penguins and the occasional dick joke. In other words, it was entertaining, in a way that Totem and Taboo or the Dead Sea Scrolls are not.

Basically there is two different endings in Evangelion: there are the original last two episodes of the 26 episode TV series, and two films that 'replace'/augment them. The two different endings seem to actually depict the exact same events, just in two very different ways. Though honestly, it isn't entirely clear to me if they literally end at the same point, but 99% of them depict the same events. The creators intend for you to watch the TV series (including the TV ending) first, then the two films (they haven't retroactively eliminated the last two TV episodes or anything).

The confusion is over the quality and (more importantly) fan reaction to the different endings. Towards the end of Eva's TV run the animators at Gainax were having budget, censorship (due to the show's increasing popularity), and even severe psychological issues, leading some fans to suggest that the last two episodes aren't what the creators actually wanted, or that it somehow is untrue to the episodes that came before them. Apparently there was a big fan backlash in Japan against Gainax because of the ending, leading to them creating the two films as a 'new' ending.

But that's just one perspective on the quality of Evangelion's TV ending. It's shouted so often by some very loud people that newbies to the series sometimes think it is some law or definite settled issue. So unfortunately a lot of fans who found the TV ending too bizarre or not filled with enough fanservice tell a lot of people to just not even bother with the last two episodes, which is a shame. I personally felt the TV ending was practically perfect, capturing entirely what the series was actually about - which is not giant robots, crazy religious imagery, and aliens, but the characters and their relationships (and on another more important level, our own relationship to the world and those around us). The TV ending does an excellent job dealing with this stuff. It's raw, it's brutally honest, it's even more experimental than the rest of the series is, and it doesn't give any clear answers (ie you have to figure it out for yourself what it exactly means). The films have some extremely entertaining scenes in them and some wonderful animation, but they are filled with an overabundance of things that were merely fun windowdressing in the series (like the religious imagery). IMO it's too focused on what the fans apparently wanted, partially at the expense of the creator's desires. It's almost like they confused the dessert/candy with what the real meal was. There is still some of this depth, but the ratio between candy/meal is far too slanted for the former. They also overexplain what exactly happens, which makes you lose some of that wonderful quality the series has in that the viewer questions their own values and perspective (though the film does have some of this too, I think it is a little too arty and pretentious for its own sake). I found the films to be admittedly enjoyable, but fairly weak/uneven by the standards of Evangelion (though the last few minutes are amazing). And it doesn't help that the US release of the last film has a killer translation error that can really confuse viewers...

Further confusion comes from the fact that there are multiple versions of the films. AFAIK in the US there is only one version of each film released, but in Japan there were quite a few. That's probably why some people get the feeling there are three or even more endings. But there aren't really any major story changes in the different film versions. It's interesting to read about or watch after you have seen it all, but it's nothing to worry about until after you see the series and two films.

And I am not happy with this news, largely because the Eva English dub is pretty bad (partially because the Japanese dub is so perfect). The inevitable censorship will suck as well. Please, just buy/rent/download the DVDs...

Some (very few) of these companies care about people downloading the animes they have distribution rights to. For the record, EVA *has* aired on cartoon network before. It aired the first episode dubbed as part of some Giant Fighting Robot theme day on toonami. It also aired the whole series in australia.

I see three major problems with airing this show.

    1. The dub is atrocious. For those who have watched cartoon network before, you know that they refuse to air anything in subtitles, even after midnight. Although, now that I think about it, everything on adult swim currently has a pretty good dub. The cowboy bebop dub is actually better than the original japanese. Maybe they will make this one exception, or redub the show, but I doubt it.

    2. There is a lot of sexual innuendo, sex, and gay sex in eva. I don't know how they are handling such things now, but in the old days, they would edit *everything out* even if deleting the relevant scenes made the show make no sense. Somebody who is willing to stay up late and watch adult swim should tell us what they have done recently with the homosexual characters in samarai champloo. Particularly, the guy from holland in episode 6.

    3. The ending sucks. Here, let me spoil it for everyone. Gainax runs out of money. Seriously. They start out by finding clever excuses to hold the same frame for a long time, but by the last two episodes, they have given up and they are just animating some rough sketches, not even bothering to color things in. They try to convince you that they are just being artistic and deep with their sketches, but... no. They are just broke.

They do pull together enough money to do a couple of cool, fully animated scenes. I particularly liked the the alternative world bit, where everyone is happy and healthy.

    4. There is an alternative ending with extremely high production values that they should show instead. A movie, called End of Evangelion replaces the last two or three episodes. It features some really bad ass fight scenes and is overall, a pretty good ending to eva. Unfortunately, it also has some really disgusting stuff in it. Frankly, I hope cartoon network airs this, and I also hope they censor the hell out of it. It would be nice if they kept the most obvious bit of nudity. The *big* nudity issue (can anyone crack my code? I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't seen it). There are some things, like the disgusting scene between shinji and asuka that starts out the movie that should be removed. Removing that would not be censorship, it would be good editing. Overall, picking up the most popular ones is a good choice, then once deciding on what you like about then, you'll be able to find some more you like.

Remember anime is not like most western cartoons; you'll find all kinds of stories for both kids and adults and all in between.

Like others have pointed out, it's like saying "How do I begin my journey into the world of movies." Japanese anime is really that diverse, so it depends what you like.

Personally, I found Evangelion profoundly disturbing. That is not to say it wasn't good, more that it was not light fare. You probably should watch it at some point, but don't start with it.

As far as dubs/subs go, that's really a personal preference, which is why people feel so strongly about it. You'll have to make your on decision on that. It basically boils down to how much you like reading while watching TV/Movies, and how well you understand the original language. Anyone who says that one type of translation is ALWAYS better than the other probably doesn't understand Japanese and isn't qualified to judge.

If you get Cartoon Network, I would recommend watching Adult Swim (since it won't cost you anything to try it) to get an idea as to what's out there (but do not look to it as The Authority on anime). Mind you, that's on TV, so it is dubbed and edited (also not everything they show is Japanese). Otherwise, try to rent or borrow DVDs. This is a bonus because they normally have both subtitled and dubbed versions, so you can take your pick.

As a guide, I'll list some anime that I've seen and tell you briefly what each is about:

    Ghost in the Shell (Movie/TV):

Cyberpunk style movie. Cyber technology has advanced to the point were complete artificial bodies (and more importantly brains) can be made and a person's mind or soul can be placed in them. The theme pretty much explores the implications of that.

There is a second movie which I have not seen, and the TV series (Stand Alone Complex) which follows in the same theme as the Movie, and is currently running on Adult Swim. I should mention that the central characters are police.

If you like Cyberpunk (Max Headroom, Blade Runner type stuff) definitely see this. Personally I'd recommend seeing the movie first, but it isn't required.

    Cowboy Bebop (TV/Movie):

I really love this one, and this is probably what got me into watching anime "serious." (I always had a casual interest in it since watching Speed Racer, and G-Force as a young kid, then later with Tundercats and Transfomers.) I plan on owning a box set of this.

Cowboy Bebop is an action show about some bounty hunters, with a sci-fi backdrop. It's in the future, with interplanetary (not interstellar) travel. The background music is somewhat important to the show (but not integral to the plot), and is highly acclaimed. (Written by Yoko Kanno, who also did the music for the Ghost in the Shell TV series.) When I first watched Cowboy Bebop, it reminded me of the animated movie "American Pop," in both animation style and musical theme. If you like American Pop, you should love Cowboy Bebop. I think American Pop was also done by some of the same people who did Heavy Metal (or so I've been told). In fact, if you like Heavy Metal, you'll probably like anime in general.

I haven't seen the Cowboy Bebop movie. I'd suggest watching the series first, though.

    Vampire Hunter D (Movie):
