Cartoon Network Acquires Neon Genesis Evangelon

Too bad it won't be intact at all unless it's in the Adult Swim line up.
Anime News Network is reporting that Cartoon network will be airing All of Neon Genesis Evangelon which will be heavily edited/Americanized for violence, gore, and nudity.

In all it's gore, religious themes and sexuality?
Because I'm pretty sure it will be heavily censored and edited, like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were.
You can't take the sky from me...
Evangelion... with an i. Just like the way it's spelled in the links.
Adult Swim sure is cutting edge, be sure to invest in them- I have a feeling they're about to break wide open..
Hopefully they don't do the "Foxbot" on evangelon. For those of you who don't know Neo Genesis Evangelon is considered to be one of the "ledganday" animes.
Whilst I'm glad to see it being shown, I feel that having it on that channel won't do much good for the popular perception of animé in the US. I'd rather see it on some culture-oriented channel that shows foreign artsy films and similar, although that doesn't exactly result in an accurate perception it's a closer one than we currently get.
I am trolling
I am firmly convinced that anybody who claims to know what this anime is really about is full of shit. Seriously. The moment they start telling you about the plot and all the accompanying existential quasi-religious mish-mash, tell them they're full of BS because they don't have a clue either.
On a side note, what's the big deal again? This franchise isn't just old, it's stale. FLCL airing on the cartoon network was bigger news than this. Wake me up when they get something not over half a decade old.
You need a FREE iPod Nano
...which ending are they going to show?
I understand completely why CN shows only dubbed programs, but NGE is a prototypically abysmal dubbing job (and i apologize to the voice actors involved, but this show really made me cringe). While shinji is supposed to be unpopular, he shouldn't be utterly grating as he is in the dub.
Anyway, i wish someone would take a serious look at showing this subbed.
There are lives at stake here!
Here is an example of what you can expect to see should you decide to submit yourself to such torture.
I honestly don't think anyone should view this series in its mutilated, dubbed form on CN, not even newbies. Those of us that love the show most likely already have the boxed set, and can watch it in its proper, unedited, subbed format. Those of us that haven't seen it would be getting the worst possible introduction to the show on CN and might even form incorrect opinions about it based on that mess.
The coolest voice ever.
I love Cartoon Network and other outfits for showing anime, I really do. But they take so damn long to get anything over here that all the total anime freaks with friends in Japan will already have seen it nine thousand times over before it gets here, and if you let them sit you down in front of their DVD player, so will you. For once I'd like to enjoy something without nineteen of my friends having already told me everything a year or two in advance.
Anyone RTFM and note the link stating that Macross is being adapted? This is going to be mental whiplash for anyone who watched Robotech and never paid attention to the creators repeatedly stating that it was constructed from three different anime series. Now people who've seen Macross Plus and Macross II on cable are gonna think, "I was wondering what all this was about."
All because in America, anime is still just a gimmick for making money and not a pointer as to how to make better cartoons.
If my grammar and spelling are off, I am [distracted/tired/careless] (take your pick)
Stupid pointless complaint.
I personally believe that there isn't a correct interpretation of Evangelion; instead the creators just took a normal giant robot anime and threw in a random mishmash of religious symbols so people would think it's profound.
"ZOMG, IT'S REI!"
"Has anyone else with Anime specifically disabled seen it a lot on the front page recently?" I'm sorry I'm not sure I understood what you were trying to say. Can you disable anime specifically on the homepage? Is that what you were trying to say?
I wonder how they'll show it. A local PBS station used to show all of it, except blank the video (leaving audio) for a few scenes. They showed the Japanese version with subtitles which I really enjoyed. Somehow I doubt the Cartoon Network will do this.

What's the deal with the two or three versions of the ending? I've never seen it before, but I'm moderately confused about what order to watch it in.

more third-rate voice "talent." isn't there any production studio capable of dubbing anime with actors who sound somewhat believable, and the dialogue isn't forced and unnatural?
mind you, i'm not expecting a shakesperean epic, just english voice actors who are as capable and believable as their japanese counterparts.
Hmm, I could swear there was a toggle switch somewhere to disable Anime headlines like you can with SCO headlines, political headlines, etc.
Did Slashdot change the preferences recently, or am just flat out wrong?
I'm not quite sure I understand why cartoon network butchers animes as they do.
Quite obviously, Cartoon network is mostly a children's network (excepting adult swim). Undoubtedly, many other people than children enjoy shows shown on CN, but it is targeted at the younger people among us. Alot of the stuff in animes such as this one (aimed at the teen crowd) isn't necessarily meant for small children. For this reason, most animes show only late at night, on adult swim.
Here's what I don't get. Why are they doing all this editing when it's on a time alottment for older people, at a time when most small children aren't up anyway? it doesn't make sense.
I downloaded it. Deleted it. Downloaded it in better quality. Bught the limited DVD. Deleted the better quality version. Lend the DVD to a friend. Never got it back. Downloaded it. Watched it. Burned it to DVD. Lost it. Lend it from a friend. Gave it back. Downloaded it and deleted it again bacause I need space and had no DVD+-R around.
And now 3 years later I read this as some kind of news?
Damn, and I thought germany is like a third world country when it comes to anime.
NGE was a great series in its time but at this point you could compare Cartoon Network to a library that aquires all the latest by Heinlein and Bradbury while ignoring Stephenson, Rucker, Richard Morgan, and others because they aren't "classic".
Really what I'd rather see is a high definition version of Gankutsuou. Or the uncensored version of Dokuro. (I'll admit it, I laughed pretty hard at episode 1-2).
i am systematically moderating all pro-religion comments down with my five karma whore accounts. a christian, jew, buddhist or a muslim. you are all spreading the same cancer of the mind. cease and desist. now. if you want to worship your imaginary deity, do so in private.
I've never paid particular attention to ignoring particular subjects, but could it be because the post is cross-listed in television?
There are lives at stake here!
Neon Genesis Evangelion is the defininitive of what the Japanese aren't afraid to do with entertainment: create something with the sole purpose of f**cking with your head.
First they take Christian themes, such as Angels and the Lance of Longinus, and twist them into something entirely different. Next they take 14 year olds, give them all psychological problems on a scale that you only can imagine, and pit them with the task of saving humanity's individuality. Finally, combine this with everybody else having complexes about being God, being worthless, and having one's existence recognized by others, and you have Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Forget the nudity, everything else is too intense for CN's demographic, and honestly, I don't feel comfortable showing the anime to others without a good sense of self. It makes you feel uncomfortable at times, and unless you can actually enjoy having your mind twisted likes a towel and twacked against the ass of Jesus Christ, don't watch this anime.
If I were a censor working at CN, I'd rather try to censor DVDA porn with clown midgets than Neon Genesis Evangelion. There is no point in trying without destroying the story. Really.
The U.S. analog television system supports a "second audio program" or SAP channel. Why can't CN negotiate a contract to air the original Japanese audio on the SAP channel, so that viewers can turn on SAP and captions to get a subtitled version?

I even saw on one of the bumps that when they dropped futurama as the lead-in the ratings tanked.
There are enough channels out there to have an all anime network. Granted, a lot of the comedy AS stuff is horrid (I'm looking at you, Chan), but it's really great great stuff overall.
Uhh.. Dokoro is brand new. Aren't you forgetting the previous 60 years or anime?
There are many fine shows that aren't even fansubbed that people are missing out on. Quite frankly, the otaku market in the US is saturated. How about some other genres making it mainstream?
For example, shoujo is burning up the manga charts in the US, but there isn't a single show on TV right now. Nevermind the NHK sponsored shows that are actually popular in Japan.
Well, to me that sounds like a great starting point for a good book, cartoon, animation or a movie: to make an impact, to really affect the reader/watcher. It doesn't really matter if the subject feels elevated or deeply disturbed after the experience.
The owls are not what they seem
...I'd rather try to censor DVDA porn with clown midgets than Neon Genesis Evangelion
That comparison made my day. Thank you SO very much.
(I agree btw. Censoring Eva without destroying the story will be impossible)

...and don't watch it. Find your local comic book/Anime store and rent the series uncut. The amount of editing Cartoon Network would have to do for a daytime broadcast would not do the series justice.
Evangelion is truly one of those series that people either love or hate with a passion. (I happen to be in the love camp...)
-everphilski-
I remember before I watched NGE, I was a whiny little bitch squirming his way through life without really wanting to. Then I saw Shinji. Really, it almost single-handedly made me hate anime (I liked it before, really!) but at the same time it made me a better person by realizing that kind of behavior isn't cool. Strange thing, it was cool back when I was in high school. Probably still is. It's the whole "my life is so awful, have sex with me" approach that seems to work far more often than it should. Disgusting.
I just hope more people see this series and realize that they shouldn't emulate the behavior in this show. Even given some very intriguing themes (which are a little too obvious, for me--I don't like to be hit over the head with philosophies, I prefer them to be subtle and well thought-out rather than "dude, what if?"), the characters are all psychological misfits in the highest degree and it's pathetic.
Yeah, yeah. I know there's probably some higher meaning behind all the characters being such sad excuses of humanity. I'm just glad it gave me a model of why everyone around me for most of high school sucked and why I almost became like them. Permanently.
Back when I saw it, it seemed to be about some pale guy who had three chicks fawning over him and then every so often they got into giant robots and smacked down aliens.
Of course, I didn't like it at all, so I didn't watch much.
Comment of the year
Good point. When I go into preferences->homepage, I only see the following sections for which I can selectively filter: Apache, Apple, Ask Slashdot, Book Reviews, BSD, Developers, Features, Games, Hardware, Interviews, IT Linux, Politics, Science, and Your Rights Online. I thought the full list of topics was there at one point. Guess I'll just have to tinker around a little to get it to my liking and see about disabling all television related articles. Thanks!
I would say the Christian imagery and themes are more a way of for the writers to insert something cool and somewhat mysterious for the typical japanese viewer. It's only in the US and other countries with a Christian background that things appear to have a significance that they don't.
You see this is in the West all of the time with writers borrowing elements of Egyptian or Eastern religions/mythologies to provide something mysterious.
The whole existential angst and questions about being accepted isn't really new. Any teen drama is filled with characters trying to get recognized by others and having doubts about their self-worth.

You can't take the sky from me...
Really, the choice of Christian elements was pretty arbitrary. For the most part, you could have just changed the names of a few things and the Judeo-Christian references would be gone. The few remaining references were mostly crosses and/or crucifixes. That part of the series was hardly profound at all - in fact, it appeared to demonstrate a superficial understanding of Christianity on the part of the writer/director. The only notable part of that storyline is the "Man Trying To Become Like God" theme, which isn't strictly Judeo-Christian.
Admittedly, CN/AS does censor the "Jesus" from "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" in Futurama. But I don't see the imagery in NGE as approaching that level of "blasphemy", simply because the imagery is confusing and really doesn't drive any particular offensive message home.
On the other hand, NGE makes a real impact, as you say, in its representation of mental illness. It examines the sort of mental illness that many Slashdot readers may have - most notably, depression - which has a tremendous internal impact upon the sufferer, while the sufferer's friends and family aren't aware that they need help. For this theme, the writer/director drew on his own experience with mental illness, and included themes related to what he learned during the course of his therapy. (If you like this concept, CN/AS is currently running Paranoia Agent, which shares the theme of mental illness but takes a somewhat more external view compared to the crushing closeness that NGE gets the viewer to its characters.)
I watched Neon Gibberish Evangelion when it was shown on the Sci Fi channel in the UK. It was awful... pretentious and quite badly animated.
Staying with the general consensus that this show will be hacked up, I agree that it'll be hacked up. That's why I've always been against NGE being shown on cable TV.
I wonder if they'll get The End of Evangelion, thougn...
Clever and witty sig.
I think most Japanese think of Christian, especially Catholic, imagery as lending a little exoticism the same way as Hollywood does in horror movies. They don't think of it as any more profound than most of us think religion in the remake of the "Amnityville Horror" is profound.
Wow. You have no idea what you're talking about. It's a friggin' medium - not a genre. Basically it's animated movies. That's all anime means. Nothing pedophilic about that. Nor does it necessarily involve any idolizing - although some of the very best certainly deserve it. You might as well just have said "If I didn't loathe your disgusting pedophilic movies, I'd stick around just to make fun of you for idolizing moving images". Neon Genesis Evangelion truly is a work of art. As are Memories, Akira and many others. Do not confuse anime and hentai (hentai is pornographic anime - often involving VERY disturbing things that couldn't happen in real life). Some people have so much self-confidence that they don't need to distance themselves from everything animated. Many of these productions are NOT meant for children. Neon Genesis Evangelion is certainly not something I'd want a child of mine to see.
Against the grain
Basically there is two different endings in Evangelion: there are the original last two episodes of the 26 episode TV series, and two films that 'replace'/augment them. The two different endings seem to actually depict the exact same events, just in two very different ways. Though honestly, it isn't entirely clear to me if they literally end at the same point, but 99% of them depict the same events. The creators intend for you to watch the TV series (including the TV ending) first, then the two films (they haven't retroactively eliminated the last two TV episodes or anything).
The confusion is over the quality and (more importantly) fan reaction to the different endings. Towards the end of Eva's TV run the animators at Gainax were having budget, censorship (due to the show's increasing popularity), and even severe psychological issues, leading some fans to suggest that the last two episodes aren't what the creators actually wanted, or that it somehow is untrue to the episodes that came before them. Apparently there was a big fan backlash in Japan against Gainax because of the ending, leading to them creating the two films as a 'new' ending.
But that's just one perspective on the quality of Evangelion's TV ending. It's shouted so often by some very loud people that newbies to the series sometimes think it is some law or definite settled issue. So unfortunately a lot of fans who found the TV ending too bizarre or not filled with enough fanservice tell a lot of people to just not even bother with the last two episodes, which is a shame. I personally felt the TV ending was practically perfect, capturing entirely what the series was actually about - which is not giant robots, crazy religious imagery, and aliens, but the characters and their relationships (and on another more important level, our own relationship to the world and those around us). The TV ending does an excellent job dealing with this stuff. It's raw, it's brutally honest, it's even more experimental than the rest of the series is, and it doesn't give any clear answers (ie you have to figure it out for yourself what it exactly means). The films have some extremely entertaining scenes in them and some wonderful animation, but they are filled with an overabundance of things that were merely fun windowdressing in the series (like the religious imagery). IMO it's too focused on what the fans apparently wanted, partially at the expense of the creator's desires. It's almost like they confused the dessert/candy with what the real meal was. There is still some of this depth, but the ratio between candy/meal is far too slanted for the former. They also overexplain what exactly happens, which makes you lose some of that wonderful quality the series has in that the viewer questions their own values and perspective (though the film does have some of this too, I think it is a little too arty and pretentious for its own sake). I found the films to be admittedly enjoyable, but fairly weak/uneven by the standards of Evangelion (though the last few minutes are amazing). And it doesn't help that the US release of the last film has a killer translation error that can really confuse viewers...
Further confusion comes from the fact that there are multiple versions of the films. AFAIK in the US there is only one version of each film released, but in Japan there were quite a few. That's probably why some people get the feeling there are three or even more endings. But there aren't really any major story changes in the different film versions. It's interesting to read about or watch after you have seen it all, but it's nothing to worry about until after you see the series and two films.
And I am not happy with this news, largely because the Eva English dub is pretty bad (partially because the Japanese dub is so perfect). The inevitable censorship will suck as well. Please, just buy/rent/download the DVDs...
There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion. -- Francis Bacon
I'll admit, I know nothing of anime. I've always heard of it in a very negative light, but perhaps that is because the people I talked to were talking about hentai (which I gather is that tenticle rape anime). Maybe it was a case of the uneducated trying to teach the unlearned.
But back to anime. What is the recommended path for one to take when they begin their journey into the massive world of anime? I don't even know which series or shows or whatever the correct term is I should watch first. Would this be a good series to start with, for somebody who is not Japanese, knows very little about the Japanese culture, and basically nothing about anime?

so everyone who really gives a shit or feels passionate about this already has the directors cut DVD and laserdisk or whatever, and has seen it 5,000 times, so why get all fucking fired up over whether it gets censored or not? YOU'VE ALREADY SEEN IT!

It's as much porno as the Simpsons
Which episode? "Simpsodoki: Legend of the Overfiend", where Lisa gets violently tentacle-raped by Principal Skinner (who turns out to be a hideous monster from another dimension)?
Okay, just kidding. I know that's not very likely- Lisa looks *way* older than most of the "sex object" schoolgirls in your average anime do... and she's more realistically drawn, and she has bigger breasts, and...... UMMMMMPH! (At this point, your humble AC was dragged off the stage by a horde of angry basement-dwelling anime-geeks and beaten to death with a "hugging pillow").

incorrect. it is very much a genre, and a localized one at that.
Is ADV bringing the Harmony Gold dub to DVD, or are they translating something else? I already have the Harmony Gold sets; if they're going to be selling the same thing repackaged, I won't waste my money.
What is the stance of Japanese anime artists/producers/{insert proper term here} when it comes to the redistribution of their work over networks such as BitTorrent?
Have they taken the stance of their American counterparts, and partaken in massive lawsuits against individuals?
Or are they true artists of the highest class, where they wish their masterpieces to be available to as many as possible, even if that means not making massive financial profits?
Cyric Zndovzny at your service.
incorrect. it is not a genre. The only thing Paranoia Agent has in common with Dragonball is the fact that they are both japanese cartoons. Apart from that. Not much. You're saying "japanese cartoons" is one genre?
yes. it sounds like you've crafted a special definition of "genre" specifically to avoid confronting just how goddamn homogenous japanese cartoons really are.
Let us not forget that Cartoon Network and Adult Swim (despite sharing the same channel on your cable TV) are considered seperate Networks in all ratings and promotion. Similar to Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite. This likely means that when they say Cartoon Network, they mean non-Adult Swim. I hope I'm wrong on this one.
Hee hee. I wish a had mod points to give.
Samarai Champloo is pretty new I think. Eva is a *full* decade old. The original gundam is freaking ancient, but I guess they aren't showing that.
For the record, EVA *has* aired on cartoon network before. It aired the first episode dubbed as part of some Giant Fighting Robot theme day on toonami. It also aired the whole series in australia.
I see three major problems with airing this show.
1. The dub is atrocious. For those who have watched cartoon network before, you know that they refuse to air anything in subtitles, even after midnight. Although, now that I think about it, everything on adult swim currently has a pretty good dub. The cowboy bebop dub is actually better than the original japanese. Maybe they will make this one exception, or redub the show, but I doubt it.
2. There is a lot of sexual innuendo, sex, and gay sex in eva. I don't know how they are handling such things now, but in the old days, they would edit *everything out* even if deleting the relevant scenes made the show make no sense. Somebody who is willing to stay up late and watch adult swim should tell us what they have done recently with the homosexual characters in samarai champloo. Particularly, the guy from holland in episode 6.
3. The ending sucks. Here, let me spoil it for everyone. Gainax runs out of money. Seriously. They start out by finding clever excuses to hold the same frame for a long time, but by the last two episodes, they have given up and they are just animating some rough sketches, not even bothering to color things in. They try to convince you that they are just being artistic and deep with their sketches, but... no. They are just broke.
They do pull together enough money to do a couple of cool, fully animated scenes. I particularly liked the the alternative world bit, where everyone is happy and healthy.
4. There is an alternative ending with extremely high production values that they should show instead. A movie, called End of Evangelion replaces the last two or three episodes. It features some really bad ass fight scenes and is overall, a pretty good ending to eva. Unfortunately, it also has some really disgusting stuff in it. Frankly, I hope cartoon network airs this, and I also hope they censor the hell out of it. It would be nice if they kept the most obvious bit of nudity. The *big* nudity issue (can anyone crack my code? I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't seen it). There are some things, like the disgusting scene between shinji and asuka that starts out the movie that should be removed. Removing that would not be censorship, it would be good editing. No one I know liked that scene or felt that it added anything to the movie.
Am I the only person who didn't like NGE because it was pointlessly dense and incomprehensible?
I know I'm not the only person who doesn't like the Cartoooooooooooooooooon Netverk.
most of these would be a good start

maybe with the exception of "grave of the fireflies" which may be (imo) a bit to heavy for a first anime.
their creations are generaly funky, but on the fun side not on the really-weird brain-f*** side.
The sci fi channel in the UK aired it. It ended up failing and getting a 3am timeslot. Without the "OMG IT'S EVA!" catch it doesn't stand up in the anime world any more.
I like muppets.
If your not familiar with them, NGE is based loosely around the dead sea scrolls uncovered in afghanistan between 1947 and 1956. Given that access to the scrolls in kinda hard to come by, it's no suprise that Gainax didn't really know what they where doing.
my only concern is them dubbing the movie in English. the new voices just ruins it. plus they do change the dialogue with some really really lame phrases. i just wished they subtitled it instead, you really get to experience the original work as the creators intended. well, it's great that they finally have it here. it's about time.
It's a possible answer to your question. Look it up!
Once you disable political, SCO and Anime headlines there is nothing left on slashdot to read.
“Common sense is not so common.” — Voltaire
That depends entirely on your general taste in multimedia entertainment. If you enjoy action flicks, I would recommend starting with 'Cowboy Bebop'. Great show with a tremendous soundtrack, and the English dub is spot-on teriffic. You don't even have to watch it in Japanese and read subtitles if you don't want to.
If you prefer something more thoughtful, I'd recommend 'Grave of the Fireflies' (Historical drama), or even 'Spirited Away' (Think 'Alice In Wonderland' but with Japanese cultural Iconography instead of British).
If you prefer Romantic Comedy, something like 'Love Hina' might be a good choice, although it's a long series and kind of goofy at times. I also really enjoyed 'Chobits' (story exploring relationships between people and thier computers in modern society) But the main character is a bit of a twit.
Whatever you choose, don't let anyone tell you you HAVE to watch it in Japanese. Mostly the English dubs are carefully done and well casted. In the case of Cowboy Bebop, I felt the English cast did a much better job than the Japanese cast did. But that's just me. Enjoy your exploration of the world of Anime, it's sure to be interesting!

Themes like that are used from time to time in US shows. Not "The Simpsons", but yet it's still there. It doesn't sound all that far out. Except of course that they're all 14 year olds. What else could they be in Japanese Anime?

They've been playing this series for years now on Cartoon Network Australia...
I don't know your age, but some that might be suitable for adult tastes, as opposed to teenagers, might include:
...just for a start
Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (the series, not the movie, which IMHO is better)
Planetes (garbage collectors in space, pretty well done)
Cowboy Bebop (as others have said)
FLCL (if you like all-out mindfark bizzare-ness)
Samurai Champloo (a very different samurai story)
Haibane Renmei (quiet, contemplative, very cool)
Just buy the DVD's.... better than watching the watered-down versions....

For shame to make fun of anime music!
Masterpieces from the genre I've heard:
24 of the 36 songs in 'classic' Bubblegum Crisis (9 of them I consider to be 'time capsule' material--they should be preserved for future generations to listen to and enjoy).
Gunbuster
Iczer I (energetic and well done but recorded on 'low end' equipment)
Cowboy Bebop
Sailor Moon (music from the original Japanese version is consistently excellent!)
Symphonic Suite Yamamoto (the only(?) Starblazers OST done in stereo and extremely well done--70s anime music at its best!)
Akira (the piece Requiem is 'one for the ages')
Project A-ko (I)
Gall Force (I): Eternal Story
Genocyber ('repetitive' but well done)
Battleskipper (I almost passed up this Takeo Miratsu technomusic masterpiece!)
Princess Mononoke
InuYasha (thanks to one of the movie DVDs, I learned the composer is so pressed for time, he composes and orchestrates music 'to fit' on the spot! Even legends like John Williams and the late Jerry Goldsmith had outside help to make their works 'look good')
I probably could go on and on about this but my point is that all anime music is not just 'technocrap'. Some of it can stand on its own as serious music that is equal or better than the equivalent soundtracks from big Hollywood movies.
Hmm there might be some pedophilic henti however you need to be intro pedophilic porn to find it.

And the moral here is if anyone clames anime is all pedophilic you know what this persons intrests are.
Besides all anime is sci fi isn't it?
I don't actually exist.
How is this off topic? It's freaken true! I'd much rather see a season 3 of Big O, than NGE. I have a feeling that it would be a bigger rattings boost than NGE, since all the people who know about it either have it downloaded or bought the box set, and don't want to see it cut to shreds anyway.
What? I never said I don't like it.
I still get the 2x2=Shinobuden end-credits music stuck in my head now and then.
I even have a guilty little pile of anime mp3's in a directory on my hard drive.
Also, they might have been taking a lot of acid when they wrote it. Mushrooms maybe... something that induces hallucinations and the belief that you can make whole segments of an animation show without animators ;)
How superficial.
Irritating and immature how some people seem to think it insightful and witty to disparage the artistic process by insisting it's the product of a drug binge.
Growup. It's not funny.
Also, NGE may have religious themes that aren't simply used for their aesthetics, but they do a crap job tying it all up, making sense of any of it, or drawing parallels that are actually clever.
It amazes me how many people are jumping to conclusions on this. It is not coming to "Cartoon Network" as in daytime programming, it's coming to "Cartoon Network" as the Time Warner controlled entity. Not everyone knows what "Adult Swim" is yet outside of the fan-base, so it make sense for them to announce this using the larger, more recognizable brand name. Hell, Funimation announced Full Metal Alchemist the same way... on Cartoon Network.
Yes, Evangelion has had two episodes air under Toonami years ago, but only as part of a ADV advertising campaign camouflaged as a "giant robot week". This in no way should reflect upon the official release of the series to Cartoon Network.
Aside from thar, we're talking about a company largely based in the bible-thumping south. Evangelion is too well known for it's anti-religion themes to get approval for anything other than Adult Swim. Considering that the FCC is drunk with power under the super-religious, dictatorial Bush administration, why would they even risk it?

ADV Films announced that they have a license to release the original Macross TV series in North America and will, for the first time ever, produce an English dub for Macross.
err, I got ADV DVDs for Macross. They had the whole series even but I bought that part only.
So, what's new?
Indeed.
Anisong is awesome.
I find that, having listened to lots and lots of Anisong (mostly from tokusatsu, however, and not anime), that it's hard for me to like any mainstream music nowadays, Japanese or not.
The quality of the singing in Anisong music is usually far superior to most mainstream artists, and I find the composition of the songs more interesting. I'll eat up, for example, an Anisong piece sung by Takayuki Miyauchi (or Isao Sasaki, Shin'ichi Ishihara, Hironobu Kageyama, etc) with an amazing tune, but mainstream J-Pop and American music just bore me. Hell, when Anisong artists try to sing their own solo albums, it doesn't sound nearly as good. I've recently listened to some of Takayuki Miyauchi's rare solo work (IIRC, he only sung one album that wasn't connected to a tokusatsu or anime series), and while his singing is as beautiful as ever, the songs themselves were just bland and uninspired compared to his Anisong work.
I support the Center for Consumer Freedom
Maybe it's something related to "masterbation", "xenon nacona" CPUs or the "seperation" of powers...
NGE is a very deep, very philosophical anime. By the time CN is done butchering it, we'll prolly be watching a version where the LCL is shampoo and in the end gendo takes shinji to disney world for his birthday. "It's peaple like you who think too much of themselves and look down on others just because they may have a little less money that never deserve to hold a sword because of how badly you treat others!" I believe the original was something along the lines of "You arrogant jerk, you don't deserve a sword". Add all the really racist stuff they do to anime and you've got a recipe for shit on cable. I mean come on man, EVERYBODY knows krillin is a buddhist. Wtf were they thinking having him recite the lords prayer so often?
A bullet may have your name on it but splash damage is addressed "To whom it may concern."
Huh? Okay, I'm trolling here but did you even read what you just said? It's no wonder CN changes Anime. That description sounds godawful. I was mildly curious about what this show was until I heard it was the apocolypse told through robot-piloting teenagers. I've watched my fair share of cartoon's as an adult, but calling that plot "entertainment" would be a stretch. Zero chance I'll ever watch an episode of this now. I know this will get modded down because not likely Anime is sacreligious here and calling BS on something with an obviously stupid plot isn't very popular in this hive mind.
OH, NO. God help us.
Your point of view would make sense, except the ending to that thing is quite bizarre. I think the creator really had something in mind, but it is unclear what that is.....

Actually, I'd recommend against "Love Hina" and "Chobits", as the fanservice may turn people off initially. "Love Hina" in particular gets VERY repetitive (which is a shame, as the manga version was much better).
:)
Instead, I'd highly recommend "His and Her Circumstances" to just about anyone. I have a wide array of friends of all different interests (and many of them, anime is not one), and every last one has LOVED His and Her (also known - by a shortening of its Japanese name - as Kare Kano). This doesn't mean everyone will love it, but it stands a pretty good chance.
If you like comedies, let me HIGHLY recommend "Irresponsible Captain Tylor". It's an older series, but has a perfect balance of humor, characters, and enough plot to keep it going. It never lags, doesn't have filler, and is enjoyable from start to end (disclaimer: this was my introduction to anime about 8 years ago). "Tenchi Muyo" (the OVA's) are another good comedic starting point, and an anime classic.
Finally, for something simply lovely, "Haibane Renmei" is wonderful, as long as you can accept that the world it is set in is simply the way it is, and a lack of extensive explanations doesn't bother you. After watching the first episode I watched the whole thing through in one sitting (via fansub) and bought the boxset that day.
I don't know what kind of crack I was on, but I suspect it was decaf.
Full Metal Alchemist for the win. Also: Bubblegum Crisis (The original, even older than eva) Crest of the Stars Gundam: MS 08th Team (Couldn't stand other Gundams...this one rocked) Robotech (Believe it or not is fun to watch the 1st time)
Or you could, I don't know, BUY them, since many of them are licensed.
I don't know what kind of crack I was on, but I suspect it was decaf.
It's funny, because putting anime on a negative light like this (while forgetting you're talking about a subgenre) is like saying all western cartoons are about ducks and rabbits.
There are way too many different types of 'anime' for someone to judge it that way. You'll find anything, from all kinds of hentai (generic erotic/prn anime - 'tenticle rape' would be just one of them) to animes that are so introspective and philosophic that'll blow your mind of.
So you should first decide on what kind of thing you like before starting a 'path'. Evangelion is a good one, as it mixes action with a bit of the philosophic/deep story plot. Overall, picking up the most popular ones is a good choice, then once deciding on what you like about then, you'll be able to find some more you like.
Remember anime is not like most western cartoons; you'll find all kinds of stories for both kids and adults and all in between.
Confusing NGE with something entirely different? While a number of anime shows have been labeled "harem anime" over the years, I don't see NGE this way at all. I can't think of a single character who "fawns over" the central male character.
I've seen both, and the dub is absolutely horrendous. At least more recent series, like FLCL, were at least acceptable. But the dub for Eva seems like it has a $10 budget or something. It was done at a time when dubbing was not really something people cared about. I doubt we can hope for a re-dubbing of the series either.
Also, they might have been taking a lot of acid when they wrote it. Mushrooms maybe... something that induces hallucinations and the belief that you can make whole segments of an animation show without animators ;)
Actually, the consciousness-altering drug of choice in the creation of Evangelion was psychoanalysis. Hideaki Anno (the creator) spent years in therapy prior to developing the show, and that was apparently one of the largest inspirations for it.
I will say from experience, though, that mushrooms are significantly more likely to induce ego-dissolving sensations of rebirth (such as that at the end of EoE) than LSD. YMMV. HAND.
Don't become a regular here -- you will become retarded.
Hentai does exist, and can be generally used to describe any anime that would be rated NC-17 or X because of nudity and sexual themes. That said, some animes will flash the occasional boob, panty shot (some more than others here), and not be considered hentai by the anime world. It's up to you to decide what you're comfortable watching. Despite what 'they' may have told you, most anime is not for kids. At all.
:) )
Good anime series: (Haven't read other replies to this as they are below threshold, so sorry for repeats. Also, having now completed the list, I'm not sure how much of the japanese culture you'll learn from these. Most of them take place in settings that clearly aren't, or aren't supposed to be, Japan.)
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Naruto
Noir
Vanguard
True Lunar Chronicles (Tsukihime)
Monster
Ghost in the Shell: Stand-alone Complex
Bleach (though I personally stopped watching at ep. 13. you may agree with me there or stick with it
Good Movies:
Vampire Hunter D (and sequel, Bloodlust)
Metropolitan (older animation style)
Cowboy Bebop (hopefully you'll grab this as soon as you finish the series)
I feel as though there are many many shows I haven't been able to remember that were really good also. Good luck with exploring the world of anime yourself. Other advice I have for you: Watch everything you can in the original Japanese with English subtitles (subs). To give you an idea, my friends and I once set up a show playing with subtitles, turned the sound down, and played the sound of the dubs over that. It was very funny, yet sad, how they did not AT ALL match. Wasn't even the same show. Characters might be saying something like "I feel as though I have been looking through a foggy glass the whole time. Thank you for rescuing me." and the English dubs would be like "Nice dress! Did I ever tell you you're cute???"
Anyway, done with that rant.
The power of Christ compiles you.

but I believe federal law ensures that the content on the CC matches the main audio of the program.
Main audio: English. Captions: English. SAP audio: Japanese. Does the FCC require the SAP audio to be captioned if the main audio is captioned?
Animenfo is my favorite place to find out what to watch. Especially the top list ati me :-)
http://www.animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=an
is useful
Personally I recommend
One Piece (hilarious characters there)
FullMetal Alchemist (good action, and also a bit deeper story)
Berserk (Violence for teh win)
Elfen Lied (pretty fucked up at times, A LOT of violence and some perv moments)
It's The Golden Rule: "He who has the gold makes the rules."
How can you NOT mention the music from .hack//SIGN? Especially the songs made by Emily Bindiger?
It's The Golden Rule: "He who has the gold makes the rules."
It is a love story between Shinji and Asuka. It's just that simple.
Here is a link to the Red Cross Book
Even when its shown late at night (when all the kids are in bed) they still cut this stuff :(
Why?
Maybe Taco saw how many people were blocking anime stories, and removed the ability to do so.
the animes Cartoon Network shows on Adult Swim (such as Trigun) and which I believe they'll be showing NGE on are not censored at all or if censored, only very little because I can't really tell the difference.
Only gripe I'm going to have is that it'll probably be dubbed and most american voice acting is not up to par if you get my drift.
HD Trailers
I've watched the whole series. I say the show is highly overrated, the ending is one of the most boring I have ever seen....and the entertainment value is lost after a few episodes. Just my 2 cents though
Which episode? "Simpsodoki: Legend of the Overfiend", where Lisa gets violently tentacle-raped by Principal Skinner (who turns out to be a hideous monster from another dimension)?
erm eyes darting left and right where do I get a copy of that?
> It's as much porno as the Simpsons
Nice troll there. The topic is about drawings done in the style of Japanese pornography. The Simpsons are drawn in the style of classic children's cartoons of the 60's. One is made to look like pornography. The other is made to look like a cartoon. Do you really not understand the difference, or are you just trolling?
After laying off 70% of their staff in 2004-2005, the company has defaulted on dozens of licenses with the Japanese Studioes, they went waaaaay over budget on the live action movie, etc.
The company is dying, this is just a quick way to raise some cash.
Sure Eva gets all weird and dumb at the end but there are a lot of good episodes before that happens :)
Hopefully they show the movie too but that would probably be a seperate deal....I don't think they've even shown the bebop movie yet?
Please, they did us a favor by censoring dragonball. I mean, you DON'T want to watch 100 episodes full of crap, right?
:(
Now if they only censored the 2-hour grunting and looking at the enemy, and the recycled scenes, the recycled plots and...
man, that's about everything
Couldn't they have at least brought over a good series? oO;
Don't just stand there, get that other dog!
From my understanding, the producers ran out of money for the ending and so tossed to together stuff they were able to afford in order to have a final episode at all. The way the two movies tried come up with an ending but failed suggests that the creator didn't really have a clear idea of what he wanted and was adding things because they sounded cool earlier in the series.
"When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, it seems like two minutes. When you sit on a hot stove for two minutes, it
Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex (the series)
Jin Roh - The Wolf Brigade (kinda violent, though)
Trigun (shows the combination of humor and seriousness that anime switches between rapidly)
Spirited Away (advertised as kid's material, but one of the best fantastic movies I've seen in a while)
Cowboy Bebop (legendary series - great jazz, wild characters, shared-world storytelling, can't say enough good things about it)
Patlabor 1 & 2 (some of the best politically-aware anime I've seen - and giant robots!)
Those are my reccomendations - but I'm biased towards cyberpunk, big f*#king robots and good fantasy.
Why can't I mod "-1 Idiot"?
I can only assume this is a person modding up his own posts with different IDs.
You can't take the sky from me...
Oh c'mon, what's the series really gonna lose through censoring an adult theme here and there? It's been a while since I've watched NGE, but give Cartoon Network a break here! The sexuality, violence, and interesting adaptation of genesis are all minor themes in the end, right?. It's just a hyped up story about a boy and his dog! The sex was just thrown in 'cause the Japanese are perverts, right? The violence is just there so that adolescent boys with dubious heterosexuality can attribute their interest to something other than Shinji in a skin tight suit. I mean, when have graphic and/or intense images ever been used in visual media to emphasize something integral to the entire piece? This way there's a whole lot more room for commercials! Oh wait.. I just heard they've cut Pen Pen out too... I'm bleeping livid.

Wow. That's beautiful, man...a perfect description of NGE! Good show, old bean.
i'd hit it so hard, if you pulled me out you'd be the king of britain [bash.org]
I would definitely NOT recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion as a first step into Japanese anime.
Enonu pretty much hits the nail on the head as I see it with this post:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=154734&cid=129 74259
Like others have pointed out, it's like saying "How do I begin my journey into the world of movies." Japanese anime is really that diverse, so it depends what you like.
Personally, I found Evangelion profoundly disturbing. That is not to say it wasn't good, more that it was not light fare. You probably should watch it at some point, but don't start with it.
As far as dubs/subs go, that's really a personal preference, which is why people feel so strongly about it. You'll have to make your on decision on that. It basically boils down to how much you like reading while watching TV/Movies, and how well you understand the original language. Anyone who says that one type of translation is ALWAYS better than the other probably doesn't understand Japanese and isn't qualified to judge.
If you get Cartoon Network, I would recommend watching Adult Swim (since it won't cost you anything to try it) to get an idea as to what's out there (but do not look to it as The Authority on anime). Mind you, that's on TV, so it is dubbed and edited (also not everything they show is Japanese). Otherwise, try to rent or borrow DVDs. This is a bonus because they normally have both subtitled and dubbed versions, so you can take your pick.
As a guide, I'll list some anime that I've seen and tell you briefly what each is about:
Ghost in the Shell (Movie/TV):
Cyberpunk style movie. Cyber technology has advanced to the point were complete artificial bodies (and more importantly brains) can be made and a person's mind or soul can be placed in them. The theme pretty much explores the implications of that.
There is a second movie which I have not seen, and the TV series (Stand Alone Complex) which follows in the same theme as the Movie, and is currently running on Adult Swim. I should mention that the central characters are police.
If you like Cyberpunk (Max Headroom, Blade Runner type stuff) definitely see this. Personally I'd recommend seeing the movie first, but it isn't required.
Cowboy Bebop (TV/Movie):
I really love this one, and this is probably what got me into watching anime "serious." (I always had a casual interest in it since watching Speed Racer, and G-Force as a young kid, then later with Tundercats and Transfomers.) I plan on owning a box set of this.
Cowboy Bebop is an action show about some bounty hunters, with a sci-fi backdrop. It's in the future, with interplanetary (not interstellar) travel. The background music is somewhat important to the show (but not integral to the plot), and is highly acclaimed. (Written by Yoko Kanno, who also did the music for the Ghost in the Shell TV series.) When I first watched Cowboy Bebop, it reminded me of the animated movie "American Pop," in both animation style and musical theme. If you like American Pop, you should love Cowboy Bebop. I think American Pop was also done by some of the same people who did Heavy Metal (or so I've been told). In fact, if you like Heavy Metal, you'll probably like anime in general.
I haven't seen the Cowboy Bebop movie. I'd suggest watching the series first, though.
Vampire Hunter D (Movie):
I saw (and purchased) this long before seeing Cowboy Bebop. It's about a guy (with an "interesting" history) who goes around slaying vampires. I guess if you lik
all your Rei are belong to us you are on the way to destruction you have no chance to survive the censors ha ha ha ha . . . . for great profit.
Yeah, just like every movie ever made is hardcore porn. And don't let that Bambi fool you, we all know better, don't we?
is the ADV english version censored? I thought it was mildly censored for some of the nudity, and some of the more adult stuff "lost in translation".. Things like Rei sleeping with the General.. I don't think they edited the scene, but they edited the dialog so they don't actually say it. After watching the whole thing, I think they left out some dialog...or in typical anime fashion expected you to read the comic. I ahd more questions at the end than the beginning!
Although if they are going to cut anything out, I'd say they could start with everything drawn in crayon! The directors apologized to everyone when they said there was too little time and it would have to become two movies.
I think the ending and photorealistic portions especially indicate the movie was intended to try to talk directly to the people who are getting fucked up in Japanese society. It is powerful, wish Columbine etc. kids had this sort of thing, or even me when I was a lot younger and getting beat up in school. Anyway it certainly broke a lot of new ground in the skin tight spacesuit genre for which I am quite appreciative, but society is still quite fucked up here so I don't know if it succeeded in its overall mission. Anyway if the dubbed thing is so bad get a DVD set if there is one.
It's no wonder CN changes Anime. That description sounds godawful. I was mildly curious about what this show was until I heard it was the apocolypse told through robot-piloting teenagers. I've watched my fair share of cartoon's as an adult, but calling that plot "entertainment" would be a stretch. Yes, they spend half a million on licensing and translating the show, and then some accountant tells them that they need to cut costs, and cant splurge a few hundred quid on hiring a decent copywriter to sell it.
Next they take 14 year olds, give them all psychological problems on a scale that you only can imagine
Confused, awkward, and horny? Rebelling against their parents while simultaneously seeking parental approval? Desperate for love but unsure of its meaning?
Can't imagine teenagers with those sorts of problems. That shit is wack.
Putting this on the CN block, even on the Adult Swim block, will be like giving children crack, and then replacing their last two or three hits with bleach.
What starts out as an enjoyable, provocative, compelling series, ends up a mishmashed glob of mind-fuckary, and a distinct vacuum where one would expect to find some sort of resolution.
And it's not the good mind-fuckary either. Not the truly thought-provoking pull-the-rug-out-from-under-you series such as Serial Experiments Lain. This is the series where every single character dies, and you never find out why.
And maybe there are some viewers that will still like an anime whose main character is a continual whiny-bitch, and turns out to be one step removed from a rapist, but I can't see the overall public opinion of this showing as anything but a disaster.

What about Shinji masturbating over a comatose 14-year old's boobs? Will that be censored? What about a grown man putting his hand inside another 14-year old girl's naked chest? Will it be censored? What about the bloodbaths? Evangelion puts Trigun to shame. Granted, it's been a loong long time since I've watched it, so I can't remember if those things are in the series or just in the movies.
If I recall correctly, there aren't any deaths in Trigun (well, maybe the last episode or something)...doesn't Vash shoot the guns out of peoples' hands and stuff? How can you compare that with Eva?
Concurrence on the crappiness of most anime voice acting in America (sorry, Lisa Ortiz!)
First, Kaowaru was an angel. And as such was neither man nor woman, but both. The tension you may feel in the bath scene is just pure honesty and love from Kaowaru, it had absolutly nothing to do with sex (sleep together not sex, its different). It wanted to understand the human condition, so it could make the choice of self sacrifice. It was created to love. Kaowaru is the angel of love. And Rei turned into Kaowaru cause Shinji freaked out. Then she saw in his heart that he was not gay, and reverted back.
Asuka was not dying when Shinji was in her hospital room. She was completely aware of his presence. Whatch her heart monitor, notice how it starts going up when Shinji starts puddin off? That's also why she said, "I know all about your little jerk off fantisies about me. Go ahead and do it. I'll even whatch this time." Because she was pretending to be asleep. That is the purpose off that scene. Done.
Wikipedia's entry on Anime is excellent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime Personally I'm a big fan of Cowboy Bebop, which they use as the first pic on the page, but it's such a broad canvas that you have to look for the genres that interest you normally. Don't think that anime itself is a genre or you'll just find stuff that bores you :-)
the symbolism and such like is therefore just a facet of character in the end. Its really that simple, the only reason American viewers choke on it is because American genre fiction is almost exclusively plot-driven and so they try to view everything in terms of plot. In each case the jiggery pokery, pseudo-technology and mysticism is just an externalisation of some part of the character associated with whatever is going on. This begins in the first episode with the "Absolute Terror" Field (personal problem manifest as an actual field) and never really lets up thereafter. If you see it like that then it all makes perfect sense, and thus we can see where the original ending came from. Its a perfectly acceptable ending if you think the show is about character, but its a problem if you thought it was about plot.

Neon = New
Genesis = Creation, birth
Evangelion = Gospel
"Neon" refers to "Evangelion" rather than "Genesis", or it would be "Neas Genesis Evangelion", so it's "New Gospel of Creation". I don't know if that's what they intended, but that's what it means in Greek.

well in Australia at least, they've been showing it on Adult Swim here in the land downunder for the past few years, its like one of the first animes they showed on CN here.
Accept any challenge, No matter the odds.
I saw the first 5 episodes or so and I wasn't that impressed. Maybe this time it'll be better.
I know it's only six episodes, but you can't just pass over FLCL like that. One of my favorites, of anything I've seen. As much as Cowboy Bebop kicked my ass in a places, FLCL was a continual three-hour ass-kicking.
I haven't seen NGE yet... but the fact that it is also from Gainax has me very hopeful.
This is my sig. It's prescription, I swear. I need it for reading things... on the other side of things
