Amen Brother! - I'm the techie of the family household - and I've got everything zipping along smoothly - without want or fear of infections (some fairly secure firewalls and virus protection and filtering going on). Yes, not perfect - but a blessed exchange for Mom's Wonderful Cooking!
Feelings understood and sympathized with. I am, alas - but 21 and a Sophomore in College - granted, I know my stuff and I'm a hard worker. But, I cannot truly relate to you until I'm in your shoes. Yes, I know the feeling of the world caving in financially (try having your computer struck with lightning and car dies all in two weeks! - that and going to school full-time and part-time job..ugh - it was a nightmare).
But, alas - we all strive on - and that's what makes us truly robust and priceless to society - we're willing to work hard and do what it takes to find that job and keep it - even if it means starting at a lower-paying job to work ourselves up again on the corporate ladder.
As far as losing a job? God has truly blessed me and I'm fortunenate to have always been employed when desired - granted, these were often Internships or other entry-level grunt jobs - but, Hey! I'm a Student! (and proud of it).
I pray that I'll never forget what it feels like to know that everyone you work with is above you in the 'ladder' - and I hope that your troubles have made you a better man and resulted in a refinement of your skills.
I did check out your site- and I enjoyed it too!
Thanks for all your thoughts on this - and I wish you the best with your endeavors.
If you're interested - check out my jobs - www.semonis.com - and www.csesoftware.com. I just started CSE - I'm going to be the Network Administrator's Assistant (or other choice description;-)
Whoa....there bud - I understand and sympathize with you on your blown DNS - and no - I was not meaning to imply that you lacked anything in terms of your resume - very stylish indeed.
But, let me reiterate one point - you are now EMPLOYED - and you got that job because you are GOOD and DEDICATED. Trust me, I'm in college and a few acquaintances are always oggling over my resume and my current jobs (currently two part-time Sys Admin positions). And honestly, I got these jobs because A) I'm GOOD B) I'm DEDICATED and C) does good looking count (please note the humor intended).
All humor aside though - those friends of mine who are in college and are truly GOOD - are employed and those that lack DEDICATION or COMPETENCE (most often both) are not. Simple as that.
I do not mean that if you're GOOD and DEDICATED you will always be employed - just that the majority of those who are - are or soon will be (2.5 yrs is soon in the scheme of life).
So sorry - but your link was not working as of 2:25 pm - perhaps you got/.'d?? lol - anyway, I concur that there are a slim minority of unemployed people out there who are truly qualified - however, I detest and loathe those on unemployment who would rather take an unemployment check than go flip burgers....and that's what really irritates me here.
As far as your resume - never got to see it - I'm sure it fabulous - then again, I'm only 20 and already have a truly killer resume - don't believe me? - well, that's life.
I still firmly believe that anyone with the drive and determination to succeed ultimately will - I'm not saying it will be easy - or that you won't be unemployed at all - just that if someone is competent and determined that they can find work anywhere!
(LOL) - true, travelling forward in time is actually quite feasible. It would take a man travelling at insane velocities - and then he would have to stop at a calculated time. This would slow time down for him - while on Earth, everything remained normal. He could travel years in advance - yet, the technology is not there for us to achieve and sustain the said procedures.
I've always wondered why we'd want to travel forward in time - if, if it was as of yet unknown how to come back.
The Way Back machine - one way that we as a species of tech savvy gurus can travel back in time...now, if only they could figure out how to reverse the technology and travel forward;-)
Good point - personally, my home ISP offered unlimited, unmetered, unrestricted broadband access.
Whoa..there - you're downloading/emailing/web surfing during peak hours?! BANNED - Then my account is 'temporarily terminated' for a week straight at a time.
Grrrr...I tried posting on other news forums - but to no avail. My ISP found out about those posts and promptly sent a 'Cease and Desist' order. Needless to say - they're about as low as they come in terms of ISPs - I pay for unlimited unmetered unrestricted access - what I get is...a 'temporary ban' every time I utilize 'too much' bandwidth.
Why? 'Cause these guys are happy to sell Internet access to people who check their email once or twice a week -but whoa to those who actually live/work on the Net!
That's not nearly so terrible as the fact that they have a tierred payment plan. If you want capped service at 384 then you pay $10 less a month. If you want unrestricted? - it's the $49.95. But wait! Don't stop there - I upgraded the account to the max - complete with a public sticky ip address. But whoa, once I started trying to access my files publicly - they banned me again! - What is a public ip for? Except to allow me to publicly access my files. Needless to say I was (and am still) very irate at them. Their service techs told me/lured me into this false sense of what I can use my public ip for - but then WHAM! BAN!
Google - thanks abound from me. I personally find it distasteful when I'm searching for research on a particular topic. More times than not - most of the top listings are by an amazon or other shopping portal that has NOTHING to do with my search.
Yes, many businesses are being hurt by GOOGLE's policy - however, it is GOOGLE's search engine! They have done nothing wrong but try and give authentic results to their Web Surfing friends.
"Of course, you can always try charging a reasonable price and trusting people to be honest. Just think of all the money you'll save not having to implement DRM."
DRM should be thrown out - pirates will still find ways to crack/hack the system. It's just a vicious cycle - one that ultimately hurts the consumer.
Producers should instead look towards more effective means of an honest and easy system of distribution. This would generate much more revenue - and shut down the napster-like systems of today.
I know many people who are now avidly seeking the honest route through the $0.99 title online stores.
Glad to see someone saw where I was going with my joke about the X10 cam - as annoying as they are - they could come in handy here for the military, police, or the prankster. I can imagine a few skate stunts that would be best captured by having a hovering chopper filming it rather than a human getting plastered by the board...then again? -;-P
LOL - not exactly - I use it so that I can easily recover bad data from other hardware - as far as I've found, this is the easiest means to do it. Just pop in a KNOPPIX boot cd and go to town - it's 'specially handy if you've got a cd/dvd burner as well as a second cd bay;-)
Agreed - Macs are losing out in the business front - because Windows has dominated the business programming end. Many proprietary based business progs are only supported via Windows.
Well, G5s are truly here now - and they've got the flashy specs to boot.
My advice? - Grab a G5 as soon as you can - they're fast, strong, and reliable. Yet, they do run the MacOS - which is fine if you're a artsy kinda person.
I use my windows machine for gaming. & My linux box for serious computing/recovery. I'd definitely only suggest the G5 if you're not into windwos gaming at all - 'cause other than that - Macs have all the rest of the fun!
In a time where high speed access has started to actually become affordable to the average consumer, we still have those elect few who live in the 'boonies' where their only high speed is derived from satellite or wireless.
I being one of them.
I see this 'experiment' as a stepping stone for future investments. Just imagine the outcome if it flops! - But, imagine the dream of dreams if it is indeed a huge success: fiber optic everywhere!
Personally, I could really use a reliable high speed connection - one that coupled Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet into one nice bundle pricing - all under $100 (although, the article claimed a $28/mo fee for the subscribers).
One other question, what's the restrtictions? Can I host my own personal web/mail server on my personal high speed connection??;-)
Slashdot...still confused am I - see, my posting (to which I'm replying) - was modded down because it's REDUNDANT - however, the redundancy occurred AFTER my post - meaning I was original thought - someone else was redundant - yet I got modded down - while someone who posted IN REPLY to me got modded UP for agreeing with me!
Granted - what I stated was grossly overstated - but nonetheless, there is an open source presence there.
Try Caterpillar for a real life example! -- I know personally that all their back end servers and mission critical servers are indeed open source.
/. here
And - NASA's going open source too see
All Your Base Are Belong To Us
Hm...looks like another SCO-like situation...

True - before software patents you actually had to have a good product to compete. Now, you just need good lawyers.
Been my personal experience as well - if you're good, then you're employed - Q.E.D.
And if you're not? - Well, time for you to find a more forgiving job that doesn't require true competence in the field.

no sig needed to make this message unique
'cause they found me last time online flaming with others who had had a bad experience...
switch? - no alternative - country living...
i'm tempted to switch to dial-up, at least they support what they advertise!

Enough to make this well worth the advertising ;-)
jk - I don't own any - I can just see a good product when I see it.
Nice - now all we need is a handy super miniature X10 cam to attach to it!
Seriously, what other useful projects than a camera could we attach to this little contraption?

Indeed! - So ironic and very hypocritical.
We're being sued for dling the music - yet, at the same time - they're making profits from the research!?
IRONIC!
