I have spent quite some time evaluating the current situation of iPod integration capabilities of various car hifi products. And the result?
Most manufacturers that brag about iPod compatible head units offer terrible capabilities, most of which were mentioned in other posts (lack of control, only a few (6-10) visible directories...). This manufacturer shitlist includes names like Sony, Blaupunkt, Kenwood, Pioneer and VDO.
According to a very good car hifi dealership in my neighborhood Alpine and Becker are two of the few that offer great quality of iPod integration (all data visible, freat control and integration...)
Ms: As you can see Mr. Moore we've had our eye on you for some time now. It seems that you've been living two lives. In one life, you're H. D. Moore a 24-year old geek, you have a social security number, you pay your taxes, and you help your landlady carry out her garbage. The other life is lived in computers, where you go by the hacker alias H.D. and are guilty of virtually every computer crime we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not. I'm going to be as forthcoming as I can be, Mr. Anderson. You're here because we need your help. My colleagues believe that I am wasting my time with you but I believe that you wish to do the right thing. We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start and all that we're asking in return is your cooperation in bringing a known system to a functional state.
Moore: Yeah. Wow, that sound like a really good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger... and you give me my phone call.
According to the article this number is based on access statistics on one single web site... how is this significant in any way? Is/. turning into a tabloid?
As someone who was born in the former Soviet block I must let you in on a secret. Not everything in communist countries must submit to the laws of economy, logic or physics for that matter. A loose translation of one of communist soviet mottos goes like this: We shall rule the winds and rain!
Don't try to argue that this causes that and that has to be because so...
Almost everything under communist rule is centrally planned. A very good 20 year-old example from my home country is that someone in the central planning committe has created a plan of banana imports. That amount of bananas was purchased one week before Chritmas and noone cared that people were qeueing up for hours to buy bananas. Bananas were therefore available only that one week before Christmas and usually in short supply.
Demand doesn't drive the supply!
In communist regimes the regime fucks you!!!
You'd have to see it to believe it.
only that it's the first star wars old trilogy release on DVD... only that fans are waiting for a copy with digital 7.1 sound... only that it's one of the best film trilogies of all time...
I already got my DVD set yesterday... pre-ordered from UK amazon.
Had enough time to see some of the documentaries and i'm more then happy so far... The documentary about the making of ANH was nothing I have ever seen before...
Strange that sony plans to implement bluray into PS3...
hope they finally got rid of some annoyances ...

GNOME 2.8 Released
·
· Score: 5, Interesting
... like:
- gui option to switch off spatial nautilus
- improved gdm which doesn't cause random system hangs on logout (with a dual display GeForce setup)
- faster nautilus
- fixed constantly non-functional (without necessary tweaking) file preview (audio and video)
- more keyboard mapping options (I mean only having a gui option to toggle Alt click or Ctrl click to move windows sucks... even an option to turn it off would help)
... i know that you can cope with most of these with enough forum hunting, GConf editing and XML hacking... I did... but come on gnome, you're soon gonna be 3.x... these things should work out-of-the-box
and I hope the new MIME implementation will finally be usable...
all in all... can't wait to get home and ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome... ebuild anyone?:-P
I just realized, that I have read at least 4 very similar/. articles in the past couple of months... I mean - what is this? Is/. turning into a tabloid?
Wow... my younger sister uses FireFox which in this new/. uncool trend language means that most single white women that use the Internet at least twice every week use FireFox...
This has been discussed on many/. threads regarding firefox... The main reason for extension incompatibility between point releases is that Firefox hasn't yet reached the 1.0 release mark...
Meaning... your criticism would have been relevant for Firefox 1.+... but not now
Of course there is a trend. Compared to IE, Firefox is undoubtebly a superior product. And thanks to OSS supporters even regular out-of-the-box windows users are converting to Firefox...
But I don't think that unless we see a clear browser usage statistic created from a wide spectrum of high profile websites from diffrent fields (with various interest target groups) there's no way we can compare these numbers to the mentioned (and hopefully irrelevant) 95% market share of IE...
When you look at GNU/Linux as a complex system and think of the things that users complain about when Linux usability is concerned, GPL'd speech recognition software is definitely one of them.
Hooray for IBM and as Ali said in the Linux ad "don't back down"!!
... we're definitely offtopic now... and being an asshole to n00bs wasn't the point of my post... I'll learn from this by writing everything that's relevant next time...
Read my other posts in this thread... then you'll understand better...
Linux users don't treat n00bs like shit as it's (as you have so clearly and insightfully stated) contraproductive... The entire OSS movement is based on help and cooperation and without it, we're screwed...
but this guy asked for it big time... I won't go into any details but I assure you, that you would have reacted in the same way...
maybe the way I had written the post appears like I approve of doing something like this... I don't... I was simply trying to be brief because I don't have enough time to get all philosophical about it
I only wanted to use the story to illustrate, how depressing and intimidating the console can be to a beginner
I mean... we all did stupid things like that (well maybe not entirely like that) and it didn't stop us from learning linux...
This reminds me of a padawan linux user that joined a linux chat i visited frequently about a year ago... he started asking n00b questions about removing all files from the/tmp directory... well after not understanding the more advanced users' advice in the form of RTFM, someone got fed up of the dude and told him that the best way to do so was... obviously... rm -rf /...
... and guess what?... the moron did it... we silently watched the moron send his entire system (and his mounted windows partition) straight to hell...

Don't forget that he's still leaving the best features top secret!!! The most sexy feature of the 10 he presented was IMHO Time Machine
