ok, let's say you want to walk down the street to your local 7-11 to get a case of soda or a newspaper, who cares what. no need for ID right? as long as you pay cash, maybe. now let's say on the way there, you are struck by a car while crossing the street. If you have ID on you, the cops know immediately who you are, and therefore so do the doctors and EMTs, so they know, if you are perhaps, allergic to some medication, or your blood type if you need a transfusion, etc. thereby making your care go smoother and quicker. also, they know who to notify (your family) that you have been injured.
the reason to have ID, aside from just doing things which require it (buying alcohol or cigarettes, driving, entering public buildings, using a credit card), is to identify yourself in case of emergency. It's a part of just basic preparedness for the unknown, a simple safety precaution for your own best interest.
so tell me again, WHY it's ever a better idea NOT to have ID on your person??
i find your comment hilarious, since one of the frequent complaints relating to voter intimidation is the requirement for a valid photo ID to vote. i agree with you however, I think it is in no way unreasonable to require valid state-issued photo ID to vote. they require it here in PA, and honestly I just think it's kind of crazy in general to leave your house without ID. It's hard for me to think of a reason NOT to always have it on me.
well here's the thing though. while, no doubt, the contracts with halliburton prolly help cheney since i think he still has stock there, the reason they got those contracts is by showing they were the only qualified US company for the jobs they are doing. im not saying they are doing it right, or doing it for a fair price but the evaluation of them being uniquely suited to the jobs they are doing there is probably accurate. sure it stinks, but while the democrats will bitch about the POSSIBLE personal interests here, they dont cite anyone else qualified who was turned down. it's not like many other companies, if any, could have seriously bid on the contracts and said "yeh, we are certified to do that...".
i agree its not the same thing. although i will tell you that most working scientists DO have a PERSONAL agenda in what they choose to research, and what they try to prove. most of them if asked will not even be too shy to tell you about it. I know that my wife has a vested interest in the well being of animals, and so she chooses to take her career in the direction of being a vet, to see to their care. she insisted we donate as much to animal rescue after Katrina as the red cross. so don't try to tell me scientists are wholly objective (not that YOU necessarily did, but i was afraid the argument might head that way...). they are still human, so no, they aren't.
that's pretty sweet, wish my local microcenter or whatnot did that. all the same tho, for cpu/ram/mobo/videocard i usually buy online to save monies. for drives and cases and stuff i do go to the store tho... i remember on particular net retailer that used to do a buirn-in for you, but they cant match the newegg prices...
sometimes, I would buy a dell. granted, vs buying the bits from newegg or something and building it yourself you pay a premium of $100-$300 depending on level of performance, but you get a nicely integrated, fully tested system, with at least a 1 year warranty. dealing with often-flaky part mfg warranties is no fun, and i have gotten burned by everybody but corsair. sometimes you just want the damn thing to WORK. for myself, I might still build one just to enjoy the build. I can afford for it to be occasionally out of order, since i have other PC's for day to day stuff besides gaming.
also, id like to point out that my wife's new dell machine gets almost 5000 3dmarks on 3dmark06, and only cost about $1000, vs. $5000 for that voodoo box getting 15000. so 5x the price, for (yeh gross estimate..) 3x performance doesn't seem like a great deal (especially with the added cost of carrying the dell name vs some random whiteboxer or boutique maker).
dude, i dont even want like half of that stuff. i hate that they insist of offering the bundles first. they just hope people want a wii so bad they will buy all that crap at once to puish of gamestop's end-of-year numbers. it really is a trap
what sucks most about this is that the BF2142 demo rocks. If this is true, now i'm gonna feel wierd about buying the game. I want to, it's a fun game, but spyware is a pain in the ass. Maybe somebody will come up with a crack to remove it, then there will be just gamey goodness....
yeh, iraq has turned out to be a disaster for him in every way...
all the same, for some damn reason enough people voted for him in 2004 to keep him in. disaster or not, don't count out the repubs this nov or in 08, a lot can still change, and there are a lot of htings besides iraq still on the table... the christian/moral issues vote is bigger than a lot of people think.
personally, i think its just him trying to "look clean" for november to do his buddies a favor. either way, im glad its happening, and just cause it's potentially a good thing doesnt mean he can't have had a hand in it...
as for incumbents, best polls ive seen put it to be 50/50 r/d in the senate. not the landslide i think the D's would need to stick it to bush, but it might reign in some of the greater stupidity if both sides have to actually talk to each other and work out some deals instead of bullying or going all chavez on each other.
oh yeh totally, cuz like, god forbid he ever is ALLUDED to being even CAPABLE of doing ANYTHING right.... or y'know maybe he just snapped out of his alcohol-induced stupor for a second, and remembered that his party base is deeply concerned about wasteful government spending....is that it? or maybe, just maybe, he is willing to go along with some of the senators who are trying to do right by their supporters by embarassing their more wasteful fellow senators into spending our trillions of tax dollars a little more wisely?? nah...that couldn't be it...
go ahead, mod me down, you are only proving my points...
people like these guys need to get out of the big city once in a while and witness the vast republican majority in every rural and suburban area. once you get about 10-15 miles from a major (pop. ~million) city suddenly everybody is one of those "rednecks" they go on about. besides, it's not like every election we have ever had wasn't pretty damn dirty. the difference here is even if every single contested vote went to kerry, he'd still have lost by a slim margin. and what are the chances that 100% of them were kerry votes? slim to none. at least that was the case last time i read about it, which was like 2 years ago when the election actually was. there is another thing; GET OVER IT ALREADY! bush wil be gone no matter what in 2 years. how about working on fielding a decent freaking candidate for once instead of continuing to bitch about what happened 2 or even 6 years ago. why not get together a fund-raising and vote-getting machine to actually WIN definitively.
thats pretty hilarious. I ALSO went for a 4 year CS degree, and ALSO chose the Graphics and Networking tracks, although I did AI as well. Not that it has in any way helped me get a game dev job (I have applied to a few..). I think the trouble is im a pretty dedicated east-coaster. I really dont wanna move out to Cali with all the wierdos out there:-P I think I'd just rather do some more interesting business programming. I doubt I'd actually enjoy game programming full time, so perhaps it IS best I just stay in the same sort of gig I'm in now, just maybe a more interesting one...
i don't know how they compare to cops in other major cities, but the philly cops ive had the misfortune of encountering (having gone to drexel for 3 years, and growing up around philly) are a lousy bunch of arrogant, self-aggrandizing, abusive, asshats who i hope are first against the wall when the revolution comes. ive met small town cops who were actually helpful, reasonable human beings; but i guess the danger of working in the big city makes them crazy. really, large cities in general seem like a sort of stupid idea to me, after seeing how much nicer everything works when everybody has a little more space, as in a suburb...
i read a 2600 letter where this guy found people camping on his wifi, and they had unsecured windows shares on their machine, so he filled them with horse porn, then banned their MACs. that made me laugh:-)
no, its not. you must have a pretty broad definition of what constitutes hate speech dude. you want to see what hate speech is? How about you read oh, ANYTHING that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has to say about Israel? THAT's hate speech. Hate speech encourages violence, or dehumanization of some group of people. What that IS, is a generalization about a large group of people, whether unsubstantiated or not, but it is most certainly NOT "hate speech". This is analogous more to saying "white men can't jump", or "men don't understand romance". Its nowhere near the domain, not even on the same continent with hate speech.
3) They've been kicked from a news site because they're not news sites, but hate sites.
here lemme just fix that up for you...
3) They've been kicked from a news site because they're not news sites, but opinion sites.
i read the damn articles. they are obvious right-wing opinion pieces. there was no "hate speech" there, there was no racial slurs, there was no suggestion of "they aren't human" or "let's round em' up". there was a lot of "i'm against their ideals, and they should be punished for their violence."
Since when is a right-wing opinion analogous to "hate speech"??
hah! i couldnt care less! so it was in gamecube cases...who cares?? if it gets me my Wii sooner, ship it in gamecube cases!! sony and microsoft don't have bupkis to play on here...
i had this idea years ago, but i realized it won't work, because there are so many kinds of IT work, it would be impossible to come up with standards, and it wouldn't have the results we want. the union would end up run my business guys anyway, then it would just be working for a company within a company. still all sorts of dumbass crap we'd be told to do.
no, the answer is just to work for people who have a recent IT background in the first place. that way at least they might understand what's worth doing, and what isn't.
we could form some form of labor organization, but the union style is not appropriate for us. coding anyway, is more like a production art discipline than anything else, maybe a guild? this was suggested before...more plausible than a union anyway.
its simple, the best programmers in the USA are too busy working and making money to participate in silly competitions. Why go to some dippy contest, when you are busy building software for Google, or Microsoft, or SUN, or Apple, making gobs of money.
To Hell with contests. If that were me, I would rather be doing something useful.
truthfully any possible sourceof income could be used to fund terrorism. we know they sell drugs, heroin/opium other stuff locally produced in the islamic world. we know they also recieve donations from anonymous charitable organizations. we know terrorists get involved in spamming, adware, anything where you can make a quick buck anonymously. now if they can print up a few thousand second rate ripped off copies of some dvd and sell them for 5 bucks a piece on the street in hongkong, wtf, they'll do it. they could also sell lemonade..or falafel(haha). maybe some popcorn to go with the dvds. hell with that, they could steal stuff off trucks and sell it. they could do any damn thing. this is all just trying to treat a symptom. inevitably, they will make money somehow, because they need money to fund their activities. until their ability to exist covertly, or their reason for being is gone, they will continue to find ways legal or otherwise to fund themselves.
the only real effect of this stupid law will be to put a bunch of dumb kids in jail, who just couldnt pay for some movie on dvd, or modded their xboxes. it won't do a damn thing to stop terrorism.
to be honest, the middle east situation seems hopeless to me at this point. i dunno, its just a bunch of land. we have more than enough, could we just move the israelis here? even if we did, would all this murdering stop? or would the palistinians just find other reasons for it?
its funny, to me it seems like a big world, yet we are always fighting over little bits of it. it seems so stupid.
well sure their business practices often shut out the little guy, but building backdoors for the government is like blatant evilness. ultimatley yeh they are the big bad when it comes to business, but money aside, these are techies who don't WANT to be evil any more than the guys at google. building a backdoor is too evil even for microsoft basically...

in a small way, microsoft has stepped up to this with the downloadable games on xbox live. some of them are immensely popular. not to mention cheap!
the popularity of case modding would suggest that looks do matter. i think we need to keep that in mind!
