  2. Re:I know how to sidestep the whole issue! on Search Companies Questioned About Chinese Policy · · Score: 1

I think you have a point here. American society is based on the principles of capitalism. That is, that money (the never-ending pursuit of it...) drives us. People succeed or fail theoretically based on their ability to acquire and apply the power of their money.
(ideally, this is supposed to become a kind of meritocracy - it doesn't due to cheating and the ability of corporations to suppress their competition through law, IE. everything the RIAA does...)

In a COMMUNIST economy, theoretically the money is spread evenly. since the governmental body owns all property, nobody has more than anybody else, unless you count those who control the government (HAHA!). (this of course is stupid because people inevitably will want to control or influence others, and somebody will grab power and never let go. at worst it degrades into a dictatorship, at best, an oligarchy - however, in extremely small populations(communes), this can work reasonably well.)

China however is a communist society, with a booming capitalist economy. Basically, they are living in conflict with their own stated ethics. As such, they are clearly (and well-documentedly) massively corrupt. Thousands upon thousands of dollars in bribes to all level of government are required to operate smoothly in china. Even then, you basically have to know somebody in the government (like employ a family member of a government or ministry official...) to get anything done.

In order to compete, businesses are nearly _required_ to operate any labor intensive business in china, and yet to do so, they must abide this rampant ethical nightmare.

In the case of google, yahoo, et. al. I think you will find they are no more guilty than anyone else, and China is much too big a market to simply "not be there".

I'm not saying I know everything, and I'm all for preventative measures, whatever they may be, but I also know that there are some disasters that we will never anticipate. New Orleans thought they had adequate levees, they were wrong. Shit happens, so it doesnt hurt to be just a little prepared for it.

I'm not sure they will have much of a case unless they can prove that this negative commentary is motivated by a competitor or some other corporate interest. If it's just ex employees or unsatisfied customers bitching in a forum, IMHOP they have a right to do that, but since IANAL, maybe i'm wrong.

I would have thought that the penchant of people in the USA to question the morality or ethical repercussions of a scientific pursuit show maturity and a lack of willingness to sacrifice our humanity for some megalomaniacal pursuit of "progress".
I'm sure we can all think of something we wish we could un-invent (weaponized atomic energy, nerve gas, communism). Science is a wonderful thing, but in order to benefit from it we need ethics and morality to direct our pursuits. If all we do is come up with better ways to kill each other and perpetuate the devaluation of human life we have accomplished nothing of value.

Somehow I think if they were grabbing homeless people off the streets of your town and testing drugs on them without regulatory protections (which is what this amounts to...) that you would sing a different tune. Especially if you were one of those people.

First off, anybody who switched to firefox because they thought it (or any other browser) was "safer" than any IE is totally deluding themselves. The fact is the web is just a dangerous place to be, and no browser no matter how "bug-free" or "tested" can ever really protect you. If you are an idiot and go to phishing sites or places that give you spyware or whatever, you deserve what you get.

the reason to use firefox is because it is a BETTER browser. It's hard for me to overstate just how awesome tabbed browsing is, but that feature by itself convinced me. That, and it's 100% free.

what else do you really need?
