  2. going the way of cellphones on Rumors of Mini iPods · · Score: 0
They are getting cheaper and cheaper. Soon iPods will be disposable, just like razor blades, disposable digicams and cellphone cards.

When they introduce plastic-memory and solarcell rechargeable batteries to flood the digital music market, we'll all look back at buying $500 MP3 players and laugh like we did with the 8-track.

I wouldn't exactly classify Gollum as being human, or even a Hobbit for that matter, but yes, when you are watching Gollum perform, you forget he's a CGI creation. It's quite remarkable, but Gollum already took home the statuette in 2001, so it's unlikey Academy members will reward him the third time around. The battle at the Minas would probably be the defining moment of the entire film.

  4. Re:What, no Matrix? on Visual Effects Oscar Shortlist · · Score: 0

I tried to love the Matrix sequels, but ended up hating it because the story is thin, the effects looked like something the bros tried desperately to come up with to win another oscar. You know, like when you think you are impressing a girl, but it ends up you are making yourself look even dorkier. Same applies to the Wachoski brothers and their lame comeback attempt. Don't tell me the Matrix sequels were anthing but revolutionary. It was boring!

  5. Re:Master and Commander on Visual Effects Oscar Shortlist · · Score: 2, Insightful

I agree as well. The main reason for MC's nomination is that recreating water in the computer is probably the toughest challenge for any visual effects team because we all know how water looks like and how it behaves. Special effects that are fantastical like in LOTR or Matrix movies are harder to judge because we can't make accurate comparisons to anything in real life.

  6. Re:ROTK on Visual Effects Oscar Shortlist · · Score: 2, Insightful

Screw Gollum, the real star of the show was that gigantic spider! Talk about a CGI character that feels its taking up actual space on the set, yet how they designed the sound effects and the animation, it made it appear the spider was big, but also stealthily deadly. Roger Ebert made mention of the realism of the spider on his movie review show, before I had a chance to see the movie, and after watching ROTK, I heartily concur with this observation. During the whole time, I wasn't thinking.."nice CGI effect", I was experiencing the moment. What a thrill! *tears rolling down my face* reminds me of Jurassic Park.

You kidding me? The burly brawl looked so computer generated. It was obviously even from the QT trailers. And the highway scene where one agent jumps onto the hood of a car and flips it... very computer generated looking. They have a LONG way to go before they make humans appear believable. OTOH, ROTK looked absolutely beautiful. I was absolutely enthralled by the realism and energy of the special effects. Like the dragons knocking the army of horses to the gigantic elephants in battle. Simply amazing.

Don't these policy makers understand human psychology? If they watched Bowling for Columbine, they'd see or understand that it's not violent video games that cause violence among young adults. It's the constant barrage of fear-mongering in the media. People become violent out of fear, not through the influence of violent media. I think that is an important point to consider. Banning or censoring violent video games doesnt solve any problem other than imposing restrictions of free-speech and the right to choose. It's a slippery slope, much similiar to the case of Canada's levy on digital media. Michael Moore really delves deep into the mystery of why Americans are more violent than the rest of the world, and its not because of violent video games or violent movies.

I guess I'm the only nerd in Slashdot who uses a Pentium Pro 150Mhz as my main PC. Of course, I have it OC'ed to 166Mhz, but considering all the advancements in PC technology over, oh let's say the last 8 years, yeah, my computer is pretty old. I can probably get $10 for it. (That was the auction price for a lot of 30 Pentium 150's at a local auction here in Vancouver, BC) It runs Windows 98, although its riddled with viruses and spyware. As long as it doesn't completely destroy my computer, I'll continue using it for my personal use as well as a target for hackers and spammers. I've come to regard my PC as a bastard child, and as such, I don't really care for it more than properly shutting it off when I go to sleep. I've long lost support for it. Given the allure of OSX, I don't think I'll be upgrading to Longhorn in 2010.

The problem with your logic is that the price of a 20" LCD would drop to about $200-400 is 3 years if the demand is there for it. Its a gamble of course, but even by then, a 3-year old LCD would have lost 80% of its price value. What Apple should do is make the iMac modular so that you could swap in a new iMac base while keeping your LCD.

Then of course if they are counting the vast amount of DVDs being made and duplicated within my corporate network, then sure. I believe the study looked at the number of sales of DVD Recordables as well as DV tape, CDRs, HD sales, etc to come to their conclusion. I got about 300GB on my computer right now and have spent the last 2 days figuring out what I can chuck away into digital oblivion. This whole hording of data is becoming nearly unmanageable.
