You're right about the stages, also the type of cancer. I know at the local relay for life events I'll hear 'Oh my cancer's been in remission for years' and then the next person will tell you how a family member was gone in months. I also hear a lot of stories at the chemo ward. My mother's been fighting ovarian for over 3 years, but it had recently spread to her liver. Actually her doctors told her in December to get her affairs in order as there was nothing they could do, probably last 2-3 months. Also she was on 175 mg morphine for pain management so no quality of life to speak of. Luckily Cleveland Clinic decided she was a good candidate for surgery and she's just about back on her feet. Almost entirely pain free. No hard prognosis with cancer, but her quality of life is better and the family has time.

What I learned? Regional hospitals may be alright but on anything important screw them, get in one of the top 10 hospitals as there really is a world of difference.

As an aside World Cancer Day is Feb 4th

The problem with the EPA is they do often give exceptions to laws and hurt the victims. For example I live on the East side of Lake Michigan. Air quality is bad here because of winds from Chicago and Gary. The EPA has been considering forcing more stringent air quality control on cars and the few manufacturing plants we have. These are not the problems of our bad air but we'd have to pay the economic cost. Another great lakes area issue with the EPA, BP wanted to put a processing plant on the shores of Lake Michigan. The EPA came up with a legally allowed pollution runoff of the plant that was higher than the state wanted to allow. Thankfully there was enough bad PR put up to stop it, but in this case the EPA was going to trample state rights.

Now as to Ron Paul, the libertarian ideal of do no harm to others would allow lawsuits to anyone that pollutes. Currently if you meet the EPA standards you're protected, so big business (Like the previous BP examples) can get the feds to let them do harmful things that they're protected from repercussions. Our current system of Corporatism is not Free Market.

Yup Bush was an idiot. Yup Obama is keeping the same pro-wall street, spend happy policies of Bush. There is not much difference between the spending habits of rank and file Dems and Reps, except for a few drastic differences like Ron Paul. The two parties may want to spend on different things, but they really don't want to cut.

While the Tea Party did start last election cycle with Paul, it's been hijacked by various people trying to lead a grassroots headless organization. Some are bad and get attention in the worse ways. No different than the various occupy movements not having a specific leader.

But the core belief of a small gov that follows the constitution is valid. Yes Bush was a complete and utter idiot sockpuppet. How he was elected twice baffles me. But Obama really blew his hope and change. Senator O was against warrantless wiretaps, was against the Feds being involved with state legal rights for medical marihuana, was going to close Gitmo, was against the war in Iraq, was going to close redundancies in the government. 4 years later he's broken all of those promises. Yes we're out of Iraq, but it was at Bush's timetable and not any sooner. Oh and the money trail hasn't changed, Obama is still in bed with the same big business/big bank people Bush was. Obama's DOJ has even given up on prosecuting anyone responsible for the wall street disasters. Hell even his Obama care was all pro-big business. If it was a mandated government program that's one thing, mandating private companies for health care, and then limiting new hospitals for competition is obvious lobbying by the existing health care insurance system.

So if you're happy with Obama being basically a 3rd term of Bush and want one more, then vote Dem or any of the other Rep candidates. Want a chance for something different, go with Ron Paul

I know I have to pay my local township taxes in a check or money order and assume this will be the case for almost every entity. More expense, joy!

Then you get to the harder issues. Forget writing your own ecommerce site. Forget using open source e-commerce software. To keep track of this data, which could end up making a company liable for large fines, means you'll have to hire a company since you can't trust to be indemnified otherwise. This is actually a huge win for amazon, you're going to have to use amazon or ebay or other large companies just to keep your small businesses e-commerce operating. That could up the cost significantly.

Nope. I mean they will transfer some, but to go out of network means the patient's money no longer lands in that hospital's pocket, so is a rare thing. Then it's up to the patient to track down specialists or other hospitals outside of that hospital chain. In my area, all the smaller city hospitals have been purchased by a few hospital 'chains' if you will, large regional hospitals that gobbled up the smaller ones and now keep everything in house. For normal things this is fine, but you never know when you hit the limits of the hospital's ability and need to find additional help. Then there's added expenses of travel, being off work to get a consultation, and gets expensive fast since things like travel and stays are not covered by insurance typically. It's times like that when you're not sure how much you should trust any doctor.

It was a rough decision but it seemed like the right choice. One thing that I noticed, doctors being asked 'if this was your mother, what would you do' seems to bring things to a human level.

That's actually the reason I object to the current healthcare law in the US. The bill passed under Obama stops doctor owned hospitals, and also forces individuals to use private insurance. There's no reason to actually improve the horrors of the current system - bad coverage of insurance, overbilling, and make better hospitals. As we speak, I've been spending the last 3 weeks at a top hospital with a sick family member (Cleveland Clinic) because our local hospital gave a 'go home a die' diagnosis. Cleveland said they could do something. I'd like all hospitals to have better treatment and not have the gov't basically monopolize hospital regions by hindering new ones moving in competing.

Whedon does a great job of character interaction. Buffy interplay with a large cast by the end was amusing, Angel was a darker mood but enjoyable, and Firefly strikes me as the best example of his style. The characters had backgrounds that mattered and stories that didn't have the characters change their behavior to fit the storyline. (For example, the last few episodes of Sanctuary just was too forced with Will all of a sudden anti-Magnus, was way out of line with his character) If you've only seen a few episodes of FireFly watch the rest, in order. The tone was also different, ST had a consistent clean glossy future. BSG was nitty gritty drama. Stargates all had the clean future also (Let's ignore SG:U, that didn't figure out what it was). Firefly had just the right mix of a lived in universe, the western motif and had a good mix of drama and comedy. Besides, the companions were hot. I'll be in my bunk.
