  1. What are we comparing.. on If Mac OS X Came to x86, Would You Switch? · · Score: 1
    What are we actually comparing:

    1. I am a Mac user, I prefer a Mac over a PC because i do not want to spend my time "tweaking" things. It is not that I cannot - I have an undergrad and post grad in Computer Science. It is that I just realised my "experience" need not be determined by also being my own IT helpdek.

    2. Why do ppl keep comparing Macs with home buily systems on performance and price. It is like comparing apples and pear - they are both fruit but.. put it another way: We can all go out and buy that nice Merc or BMW, but we also know for the same moeny or less we could get a cheaper car and mod it so it is as fast etc.. but you go not get the experience.. or those "special touches". Typical example - on laptops: the Mac has a small compact manageable PSU. The best bit is the tabs that come out so you can wind the leads!

    3. It is horses for courses.. if you do not want to spend $3,000 on a MAc then don't. Same in cars: if you do not want to spend $30k on a car then don't. I cannot afford a car, but I know I rather spend my $3k on a new Mac.

Basically, you have a choice.. this is in part to your "background" (ie are you a geek or artist). Your priorities (ie how often you use yr computer, preferences etc).. I am not a Mac Evangalist, but I do understand the "lifestyle" choice I made. I do recommend Macs but I also recommend PCs. It depends on what my friends what to do..

  2. Re:EBags on Advice On Notebook Backpacks? · · Score: 1
I think finding a decent bag for $50 will be difficult - as you do pay for what you get.

I prefer "non-computer" bags personally, as bags such as Targus scream "hey, I am carrying a laptop - so come rob me". Corps, such as Timbuk2 are great - a they are sturdy and provide some protection against water/rain.

I would go for a messenger bag/rucksack in conjuction with a laptop sleeve (such as "incase"). So you can use your bag in other situations and make the most out of it.

The question is: what do people mean when they say Apple is losing market share.

If we are talking boxes/laptops, then ultimately this is a flawed calculation. I mean I can see more computer around and many of them are PC boxes so in a way I can "see" a lower proportion of Macs around. But I think we should be counting number of actual live users.

For example, PCs have a short life span. Hence if you count sales figure, the ration of PC to Mac will always be increasing!! Or for example, the fact that "old" PCs are usually used as scrap and cannibalised to say make a cheap fire wall.. etc

If AutoZone settle, this may "set a precedent" for other companies to follow suit.. is this the plan? To find a high profile case where the CIO will just cave in rather than fight for what is right?

  12. Are extended warranties worth their money? on Apple Users Threaten to Sue Over iBook, iPod · · Score: 2, Insightful
I have had my Ti book for about 14 months now and so far had no performance problems.

    My observations so far:

    1. the average "useful" life span of a Mac is 3-4 years (over a PC 2-3 years) before upgrading to a faster machine, even if it has not failed. * implies normally Mac are better built.

    2. If it is your primary machine and you are crap about backing up etc then you should get Apple Care. * just common sense..

    3. It is unfair, but if your machine goes down out of warranty.. tough. When you buy a camcorder or huge TV you spend a similar amount of money, there is only a Limited Warranty too. * Just a game of numbers. There will be people who have no extended warranties and have their goods performing flawlessly for years. Think bell shaped curve.

    4. FINALLY.. has anyone studied the failure of harware that is covered within an extended warranty? It would be interesting to see what the average life of hardware is!! And whether there is a price point where extended warranties are worth their money!

My conclusion, shit happens. Read reviews.. pick the best system for your needs at a price point you can live with.. If the product is pivotal to your work/life have backups.. Automate things..

The way i understnd it is that most manufacturers build products that just about outlast their designated warranties. (For example, it does feel like I buy a new MD player every year).. At the same time, one of the reasons I bought a Apple PB and a pod was their generous warranty provisons. I gather you can totally abuse your hardware and they happily fix/replace it for you while it is in warranty. So if your pod fails after the warranty then you just buy a replacement battery for $50-100. I know this is "shit", but it is not as if people do not know about the disadvantages of li-ion batteries. Yes I agree pods are not the cheapest players, but by most standards they do have very positive aspects with regrads to useability/standard of build/compact form factor. I love my MD player because I can run it for 70-100hours between charges, but the downside is I have to carry 4 - 10 of my fav compliations.. but with the pod I have my complete music library but have to charge it every 2nd day. The choice is yours.... Whatever you buy, you should always read the small print and have realistic expectations, whether you buy a $400 pod or a $40,000 car, you should always do your research and decide if the product is suitable for your needs and expectations.

I have a G2 iPod so I am "lucky" to have a 9-10 hour battery. But when I travel I use the MD player. Yes "sweet" at 30 - 110 hours. I used to charge it once a month.

Anyway, the only issue with MD is the "storage".
    - a regular disc holds 74/80 mins
    - using NetMD you can x2 or x4 the time of music stored at the cost of the quality/bitrate.
    - using a Xitel link, you are effectively only recording in real time and at x1. But you retain the sound quality.
    - you have to carry only your "favourite" selection of music.

PS: I am not giving up iPod either :-)

I switched to a TiPB and iPod (from a Tosh and Sony NetMD).

I love my iPod (using Shure E2 in-ear monitors) but when I travel, access to a power supply can at times be "difficult" (say on the side of a mountain or in the jungle), hence I prefer the MD player's longer battery life.

For those of you who want to "have your cake and eat it" and enjoy the strengths of both the iPod and the NetMD..

May I suggest using something like the Xitel Pro-HiFi Link http://xitel.com/ It has a USB in and a TOC-link out to feed your MD.

Cannot record as a NetMD but you can at least use your iTunes (after grabbing a script or mp3 file of a 2 second black to place in between songs), your playlists and record digitally.

I do hope Xmd comes on line soon.. but mean while.. keeping my fingers crossed.
