Exactly!! Quote: "But it's not like we're at the end of the line of innovation that's going to come in the way people listen to music, watch videos, etc"
He just answered himself.. we are not at the end of the line of innovation when it comes to phones or music players etc.. companies are always trying to innovate.. even redesigning the wheel.. (there was an article a while back where they made a spoke rubber/spoked wheel that had as smooth a ride as our air filled ones). In this Apple has approached the same problem as the phone makers but from t he otherside. We will have to see whether Apple will succeed in taking a large share, but from what we have seem, you cannot write them off just because the big wig at M$ has shared his own views.
Ok, hands up.. i love the look and idea of the iPhone. I am not in th US but looking forward t oseeing it in the UK.
Now down to the nitty gritty.. this device is amazing, it may be a rehash of whats out there.. but it is done better.. more fluid.. intuitive.. its great because it is an all in one!! but thats its weakness too..
My only problem is it if this one device breaks/stolen/damaged.. you are screwed not once, but 3 times!! no phone, no ipod, no internet communicator!!
I though both my Treos and currently my Pearl is great (oh btw a blacm nano 2G and Pearl looks great side by side).. but I am not sticking a ££$$££ phone in my pocket when I am running etc.. it is going to get so icky!!
1. well, its like saying older people drive LEXUS but younger people drive BMWs. Some BMWs models are good, some models maybe cheaper than a LEXUS.. but just because more people buy them, does not mean they are better. In the end, you should buy what you need.
2. Do Macs have more "older buyers" because they always knew what we know now? haha that Macs are easier to use and better??
3. If their kids are buying their parents Macs (i know it does not say that in the article... ) what does that say about Macs?
4. If older people are using Macs, what does that tell you about the inherent design of the GUI!! Thats its intuitive!
5. I think in some ways PCs are definitely more hands on (in the I like to tune my engine kind of way.. ) thats why "kids" like PCs?
6. Maybe its an "how do thinbs work" kind of thing.."kids" want to know how thinsg work so like the hands on side of the PC.. while older people (and other not so old people) just want it things to WORK!
Enough from me.. in theend these are just numbers.. they can be twisted and we do not really know how the sample was taken and how..
Interestingly there was an interesting article on MacRumors about one of Apples suppliers ordering more capacitors that were associated with AMD chips. Although the source is noted to be a bit unpredictable.
Just my 2 cents..
Ok, first the Russians send tourists in to space.. and now do ads/stunts that may have an impact on the ISS? I know it is done on "their time" but doesn't this still impact you other members of the international crew? Its one small step towards all out anarchy!
True..:-)
I believe that many films do not make an actual profit, but its the "other stuff" that help them recoup most of the costs such as tieups and DVD sales http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_28 /b3942101.htm
But with the forecast of flattening DVD sales, they are desperate to hang on to what they have.. as/. mentions many times, its about time the studios embrace a new marketing/distribution model.
Also, they rely on that box office smash to cover the not so profitable ventures.
Haha.. am sleepy, but not that sleepy;-P
I know I simplified my previous post..
But projected earnings are exactly what they say.. projected.
To a point they do capture some of the information, but its still based on estimates, models and historical information.
For example, they know an artist/actor has a certain pulling power.. or a genre of film has a certain target audience.. (actually this reminds me of an article I think that was in Wired.com that talked about how to make ther perfect script - with inputs based on the pulling power of its actors etc... ) they can "project" their profit, but just because they reckon it will have a certain turn over, does not mean if it does not, all those missing $$ are due to pirates. These people who project the numbers have a vested interest - if their film is projected with a higher profit for a small outlay then theirs is produced (sorry, simplified a bit there, but you get the drift)..
And isnt that the point of this article??
It is impossible to quantify because you cannot determine if you have actually lost a "sale".
Put another way, with music you have heard it on the radio/MTV etc and you may choose to buy because you like the track (or buy the album because you like a number of the tracks).. as your "utility" of this product is probably quite high - you see value in this purchase.
With software, if you cannot "try" it before, you maybe likely to "borrow" a copy. But more often than not that borrowed copy is not actually utilised and its left on the hard drive, and deleted once the owner needs more space. It is more of a "I want to try for a short time" kind of need, than the "I really need to use this product" kind of purchase. So utility is actually low.
DVDs/films.. In London (UK) the tickets range from £8-£13 (about $15-25). I can see many people finding it difficult to justify seeing a film for this much, unless there is a USP (unique selling point). Have noticed the shorter lad time between cinema and DVD release. So I reckon one of the reasons people pirating is because they never actually planned to see it at the cinema but at the same time cannot wait for the DVD release..
Have not covered all the reasoning, that would be a paper in itself..
I agree it is cool to have an iPod and it is cool to have white headphones - you see people going out and BUYING white (even Apple) headphones to use with their mp3 player. I got an iPod as it was the best device/form factor for my Mac
Anothe point is that its just not iPods that are being targeted. It any device. They are all expensive, whether its a Zen or a mp3 compatible phone.
I just thought the sound quality of the supplied headphones were not any good. I have my Sony (71sl) and Shure (E2 and E3 with custom molds).
Actually, considering the density of London (10mn people?) I would say we are pretty safe from being murdered by gun related crimes.
In the end, just dump those terrible Apple supplied headphones and invest in something black and inconspicuous. I have a pair of (relatively) cheap Sony MDR71SLs for day to day commuting. Oh, and don't be a mug and go get some insurance.
I mean.. with the news that Macs went to Intel.. then the uber-geeks getting the Mac/Intel to run XP.. is this brilliant hype? maybe..
Eventually, Apple was going to "release" a dual boot version (only - so initially preserving OS X.. read further). It means potential Switchers now have NO excuse not to try a Mac. I mean, if Vista is late and you need new software anyway... so continuing.. you can dual boot, but what we really want is "virtualisation" (yes i use "s", I am from the other side of the pond) so you can seemlessly drag between XP and OSX applications and run thing simultaneously. Eventually I would be a little frustrated if I had to reboot just to use my XP based application. Hopefully, this will encourage the switchers to try more Mac apps!!
What is best depends on your circumstances.. what you need to do? If you want to carry your home drive, a 100G Seagate momentus in aluminium compact case/caddy and FW/USB2 connector is cool! If is day-to-day data, pics or photos may I suggest..
"Peter Jackson is an incredible filmmaker who did the impossible on 'Lord of the Rings,' " this lawyer said. "But there's a certain piggishness involved here. New Line already gave him enough money to rebuild Baghdad, but it's still not enough for him."
Can you believe this quote by the lawyer. Note, "New Line already gave him enough money.." this implies:
1. New Line can retroactively decide what you get.
2. this vertical integration is techically an interesting idea where every department justifies its existence by "charging" other departments for providing a service they are already paid to do.
3. a case of the kettle calling the pot black. Warner obviously wants to make buckets of money, and wants to make more, who doesn't?
4. It is now not unusual for actors/directors etc to take a pay cut or not get paid at all, for a percentage of the profits.
Apple out sources the production of their computers to 3rd parties in Asia. Is it these 3rd parties who in turn out source the batteries?
I am sure Apple passes the costs back to the companies that build them, but ultimately at what cost to their reputation?
Any idea who makes the batteries?
Has anyone calculated how many man hours have been
on
New Standard Keyboard

Hey, has anyone estimated how many man hours have been lost since the introduction of QWERTY keyboard? Say with the reference point of the introduction of the IBM PC?:-D
7M CCD.. imagine the size of your files when you send these to your friends. In the UK it costs about 30p (50cents) for each photo you send by MMS. If you send a pic from a 7M pixel camera by accident.. whoops.. huge phone bill..

In the end, it is a recuitment tool to lure all those console kids to join, with the promise of "cool weapons".
Its aimed (no pun intended) at the kids.. i hope there is not an adult who would make a career decision based on a game...

I would think such a design would be a great chip for laptops, minis, iMacs and iTV!

So.. does that mean there could be a hack (or the user is stupid enough to let everyone "see" their files)?
I mean is MS usually leaves all its ports open on its OSes, then by default that means your "beacon" is on to let everyone know you can be hacked!
So what i stopping the Education Department from sending out an update to all the schools?
LOGISTICS ie it was easier (and I guess cheaper) to have fewer box sizes.
and
COST - less "wastage" of space used to store different sizes/unused packaging/cost to post (by weight).
BTW the example I think was AMAZON.
Actually, in the UK they have just started to charge by weight and size of the parcel, so this may force businesses to reconsider.
I guess bed time reading for them was: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Orwell

It's a 1G SD card.. an SD card you say.. what's so special.. OK
1. is x66 speed - great for video/continuous frames on a camera
2. compatible with my Canon compact and TREO 650
3. It has a built-in USB connector!!!!! No need for extra adaptors!!
A great idea.. as a SD card dual use it with an MP3 palyer, camera or phone etc.. plug it in to your USB at work or home!!
