  1. You want a new goddamned standard? on .mail Domain To Eliminate Spam? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Here's the goddamned standard... Make it ultra-easy so it's simple to hit critical mass where everyone uses it.

For your domain, put out a text file. In that text file, put the IP addresses or range of your server.

    Name the file: mailservers.txt

For example... I would have (for DracoSoftware.com) a page called mailservers.txt. It would contain:

    206.67.56.202

If I had a range, it could be either individual IPs:
    206.67.56.202 206.67.56.203 206.67.56.204

OR, a range delimited by a dash:

    206.67.56.202-206.67.56.204

Once we get sites to publish their legit mail servers, the rest is easy... Setting up servers who do DNS-like caching at your local ISP is easy. Your individual e-mail program can then do WHATEVER IT WANTS with the e-mail... Whitelist/blacklist/take into consideration for baysian filtering... whatever. The important thing is to get the legit mail servers published.

If a mail comes from legit mail-server... Easy.
If a mail spoofs a publicized server... easy.
If a mail comes from an unknown server, mark it as suspicious.

If people want, I'll start posting names of domains that were cool enough to create a mailservers.txt file.

    Ready??? GO!

Stories like Jack and the Beanstalk are created to pass on morals and acceptable social behavior in society, especially back when many people couldn't read or write.

Let me get one thing very clear:
These stories are not what morals are based on. These stories are how morals are taught to others (Especially children).

Using Jack & the Beanstalk to teach your kid "never steal magic beans because I may run into an angry giant" is missing the point. Using it to teach your kid "Don't steal, because it will cause you more trouble than it's worth" has a place even with non-religious types.

    Food for thought...
One definition of religion is as follows:
A cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith.

It could then be easily argued that Science is nothing but a religion. Without a doubt, it would be a religion who's effects are seen more literally in the world around us. Keep in mind though that many of our working theories are nothing but ideas that have not been disproven (Big bang, string theory, dark matter, negative energy).

  25. Re:It's Fair Use on Eminem Sues Apple for Sampling his Samples · · Score: 1, Redundant

There is no such thing as fair use in advertising. When examining if a case is fair use, there are 4 main guidelines.

Purpose and character of the use (If you're trying to use it to make money or just teach)

    The nature of the work

    Amount of the work used

Effect fair use would cause on the market

Of significant interest is the first. Fair use is for things such as news reports (So they could show the Superbowl 1/2 time show without paying), and education (Reproduce a portion of Moby Dick for examples of metaphor).

Of other interest is the last. Many musicians stand to make quite a bit of money off of lending their music for ads (Crystal Method has made a killing doing this). So claiming "fair use" and having people use the song on any ad would destroy the potential commercial market for that song.
