  1. My 2 cents (after $2 rebate) on 1300 Unopened Fry's Rebate Forms Found In Dumpster · · Score: 2, Insightful
I've stopped buying products advertised at a price after rebate. It simply isn't worth the hassle to assemble the appropriate documentation, photocopy it, file the photocopy, and then send it in. Then, 6 to 8 weeks later, start phoning the company asking where my rebate is. All that to save a few bucks on some cheap piece of Chinese-made crap simply isn't worth my time. I'll continue to review the ads and buy something I want when it is truly on sale. As a result, I've pretty much stopped going in to Fry's since nearly everything has some sort of rebate attached to it. I never go to Best Buy either, partly for the same reason, but mainly because their prices are always high and their service sucks so bad.

Does this matter to a place like Fry's. Admittedly, no it doesn't, but I feel better about it.

However, if this really does keep a few students in school who otherwise would have dropped out, its probably a non-issue. For those who are motivated to go to college, it isn't going to do anything.

In America, I thought it was the government's responsibility to choose who and when to prosecute, not private citizens or corporations.

Its the district attorney who usually decides whether a case is worth taking to court. The police simply respond to a complaint. They don't have the leeway to call BS when a complaint is made. They can sometimes talk to the complaintent about how their case isn't going anywhere but if they insist upon continuing with it, then the police carry out their duties.

Any private citizen or a company can make a complaint if they feel they've been wronged. That, of course, doesn't mean it's justified. That's for the DA/courts to decide.

  17. Re:Casinos win these battles all the time on Slot Machine with Bad Software Sends Players To Jail · · Score: 1
Totally different situation. Casinos are private property and, as such, the owners may bar entrance to their gambling facilities for any reason. If they feel a player is "too lucky", they can ask him to stop playing. That said, however, he still legally owns whatever profits he had accumulated to that point (barring accusations and proof of cheating, of course).

Here, apparently, they are considering prosecution of an individual who was on the property legally and was playing the machine according to the rules saying they either knew the machine was defective or that they should have known. This, of course, is pure and utter bullshit. It isn't the responsibility of the player to know a machine is defective. The casino owns the machines and are responsible for their maintenance. If they've left a defective (but operational) machine on the floor allowing it to be played, then any losses that accrue due to the defect is their problem. Maybe the player just figured this was one of those "loose" slots, the casinos are always advertising.
