  1. Nothing new on Some Windows Apps Make GRUB 2 Unbootable · · Score: 3, Interesting

This has been a problem with older versions of Dreamweaver. As part of the copy protection, it would write data to the space between the MBR and the first partition. Steve Gibson talked about it on Security Now episode 132 (circa 2008) when discussing how this issue fubar'd TrueCrypt (unless you had a recovery CD) just after it came out with its whole-disk encryption ability.

In typical commercial construction, including schools, startup, testing and balancing, and commissioning costs are included in the construction cost for mechanical systems, as is training of the staff to operate and maintain it. To not do so is not good construction administration practice and all around stupid. And I fail to see how starting up a system couldn't be part of the "construction" process for those who have pointed out the "construction cost earmark" phenomenon.

I'm sure Toyota's shareholders are very pleased that their investment is being squandered on stuff like this when they could be solving their safety issues that could potentially bankrupt the company and in turn the shareholders.

As if I need MORE information overload in my car. All I want is a car I can get in and drive without constantly being pestered by a GPS, an in-car entertainment system that wont just play the radio like I want, or fuel-efficiency and driving tips. I know where I am going most of the time, I will ask the GPS if and when I am lost. If my driving sucks, the cops will pull me over. Just do as I say, stupid car, and get me from A to B, and leave me alone!

  11. Many rings to rule them all! on How Do You Handle Your Keys? · · Score: 1

I usually carry two keyrings with me. One has a house key and my keys I routinely use for work. I also carry a keyring that has my car key and remote fob on it, and nothing else. That way if I lose my car key ring, I still have my other keys, and vice versa. Each of my vehicles has its own independent keyring. Keys I only need for around the house like garage, power equipment, gates, etc. are all on their own ring. Back in college it was the same way. totally seperate car key ring and then my dorm keys, lab keys, and whatnot. It is a system that has worked very well for me over the years. I have yet to lose a single key as far as I can remember. One keyring for all is an eggs in one basket situation.

  12. Re:Workflow on What Is Holding Back the Paperless Office? · · Score: 1

I probably should have clarified, we do use mostly 11x17s for markups. For my first round and for plans that are a bit hard to see at small scale, we use 24x36 (our shop's standard plan size). Usually that is just during the first round of sketching and the last couple of rounds in checking for errors.

  13. Workflow on What Is Holding Back the Paperless Office? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I work in an architecture/engineering office. Each department has its engineers/architects and its CAD technicians/designers. Our typical workflow has the engineer, ie me, quickly drawing out what I want on a blank plan, and the CAD guys make it happen so I can move on to other things. If I was going to draw what I wanted in the computer anyway, why do we need CAD guys? (hint: they are less expensive per hour, to be cynical. But that lets us get more work done overall).

  25. Re:Where do I begin on Working Off the Clock, How Much Is Too Much? · · Score: 1

This whole discussion makes me feel very happy to work where I do. Basically the way our system works is that all full time employees can be paid overtime after 45 hours a week except managers, who are exempt. But even managers don't usually work crazy more hours than others. Each employee also gets a certain number of hours every pay period that goes into a paid time off account. (most employees get 6 hours per pay period). These hours are your paid time off for sick leave or vacation. You can carry up to 200 hours at a time, they do not expire at the end of the year, and any hours you rack up over 200 are cashed out to you at your hourly rate. Basically I work my 40 and leave unless there is a big push on for a project, then I will work some extra. But at most I am working 5 hours a week for free, which is a fine tradeoff in my opinion, and rarely happens when I manage my time properly on a project. But sometimes it can't be helped, and management knows this.
