... and then spend hours waiting for Windows Update to update... reboot... update... reboot... while hoping that there isn't some horrible worm that will take over your machine while your waiting to get the critical patch that was published 20 "Patch Tuesdays" after your zip archive.
I did this once (only I sent it via snail mail packet) but then the bank happily sent me the fully filled out application for my signature... in a pdf... via email.
I was horrified. My name, my wife's name, our address (past and present), ssn, all my account balances and numbers for every financial thing I own -- every single piece of the most sensitive personal information I have in one convenient package in an unencrypted email.
I sent a very terse message conveying how upset I was that they did this but they literally just said, "We've never had a problem doing it this way."
Needless to say I stopped doing business with that mortgage company.
I think it is sad but without a law I don't see financial institutions changing. Even then just look at how they interpreted the "multi-factor authentication" law... site key, really?
Comic Book Guy Got an MCSE Certificate
on
2010 Geek IQ Test
·
· Score: 1
It felt like the quiz was given by comic book guy fresh out of MCSE school with a sarcastic, spitty, snorting laugh coupled spastic eye-roll after each incorrect answer to an obscure MS buzzword soup test.
Ok, fine, I admit it, I only got 35% but I'm not bitter.
I was fortunate enough to get the DirecTV HD TiVo while it was available for a short time. I even own it, instead of renting. I think it is probably worth more now on eBay than it was when I bought it. It will be a very cold day in hell, with pigs flying over head before I give that thing up. If DirecTV stops supporting it and tells me I have to upgrade, I will cancel my DirecTV contract on the spot. The real sad part is there is no other comparable solution out there right now.
TiVo Rulez #1 !
Why don't the banks just require that the referrer to a login page be blank. Yes, this would mean that the login page would have to be either on the main page or very simple to type since the only way a (normal) user will have a blank referrer will be to type the url in.
Essentially this means that banks would be requiring everyone to physically type (or bookmark) their banks login page and that would be the ONLY way to get there. I suppose it could be modified to accept a referrer of the banks own domain so you could click a "Login Here" button.
I know power users can spoof their referrer using a browser setting and malware could do the same, but at least that would be another layer. What am I missing here?
I think the bigger issue is that the majority of HD content out there sucks. Taking crappy video and re-encoding it to 1080p will not make it look better. Sure it's "full HD" now, but it can still look like crap. I have seen many 720p videos that look WAY better than some 1080p videos simply because the source content was recorded using better equipment and encoded well. TNT-HD is the worst network of all for this crap. Many of there HD simulcast stuff is the exact same show just scaled up and often times stretched with a terrible fish-eye effect. It is sad the amount of bandwidth being wasted for this "HD" crap (don't even get me started on DirecTV's 'HDLite'). [/rant]
Good point. I should have been more specific, I was referring to Winamp 3.0. That is when I dumped winamp and used nothing until iTunes. I have heard that Winamp has improved much since then. Still, with the tech industry being so competative companies cannot afford to have a flop (e.g. Winamp 3.0, Netscape 6.0, etc.)
I couldn't agree more. A good rule of thumb is that AOL + ANYTHING = crap. I literally got a knot in my stomach when I read "...America Online, whose talks with Google prompted the change in policy..." AOL killed Winamp and Netscape, and now they are threatening Google. This is a sad day, if only it were April 1st there would be hope that this is all just a lie. It is like AOL is a parasite and only remains alive by sucking the life out of everything it touches.
Google: "Don't be evil."
AOL: "Don't appear to be evil."
But, like another poster said, if you buy the pants they remove the tag. If you steal the pants you are stuck with the tag. That makes sense.
In the case of the CD content, if you buy it you have to deal with the DRM problems. If you steal it you actually get a better product that you can use as you please. They actually only treat paying customers like criminals. And they don't see that. Very sad indeed.
You got me thinking. Imagine 5 years in the future...
Targeted ads are now common. Everything you do from the grocery store to internet surfing habbits is tracked and everything is taylored to what you are interested in. Now, your mother-in-law comes over for dinner some night. Afterwards everyone retires to the livingroom to watch a movie you have recorded using Google's free DVR and service. After a short time of viewing, your mother-in-law is shocked and upset when all of the targeted ads are for Herpes treatments, 900 sex lines, ED medicine, and American Girl Dolls (you sick bastard!).
I would be more concerned about mixed households. I know my wife has COMPLETELY different search habbits and hobbies. For her Grub => Worm, Linux => That weird crap I do to the computer, boot => footware. If opposites attract we will definitely be together forever.
...Or just use a trashcan sized microwave (patent pending) and nuke everything you throw out at least. I can only imagine the stench of the future where everyone has smoldering bags of trash out on the corner before trash day.
It is a pity really. You were making a seemingly good arguement and I was on my way to agreeing with you. Then you had to throw in The Christian faith (who's political wing is the Republican party) which had absolutely NOTHING to do with your point. I suppose later in your post you tried to justify the inclusion of this statement. I wouldn't know because I chose to stop reading at that point. In fact, since your post was modded insightful, I chose to stop reading this entire thread. No good, reasonable conversations can possibly be forthcoming.

Noted physicists Schrödinger and Heisenberg are driving around in a car, and Heisenberg goes "I think we just ran over a cat."
"Is it dead?" asks Schrödinger.
"I can't be certain", says Heisenberg.

Hey, what a great idea!
Man, this is sad. I was scanning the RSS and I read "Frat Aliens Win ..." and of course I clicked the link immediately based on that :).
One difference: Find the most non-tech person you know who still uses a computer. Now, give them a list of company names as follows:
1) Corel
2) Novell
3) Sun Microsystems
4) Google
Now, ask that person which companies they have heard of and what those companies do. A strong brand name is a very powerful thing.

And three copies after that its USELESS! Hooray!
Very well stated. However, I have to say, this line made me chuckle:
What more can the government due to encourage higher education?
Spelling mistake or a very well thought out bit of humor? If I were you I'd claim the latter.

You can do what you want in firefox. It takes a little work, but it is fairly simple. Go here to see how.

In other news, the oil industry attributed increases in gas sales to an increase in automobile sales.
Okay, parent was modded as a Troll but this wasn't?
