I know this was just a joke, but I need to respond. Rails saved my career. After being in a dead end it job for 3 years, I found myself suddenly unemployed. I then took it upon myself to learn RoR in 3 months because it was the only way I thought I could get a break as a developer- I'd be the only Ruby developer when it really hit big. After building 2 projects to show off (a blog and a business lead generation site) I sent out my resume. It took two months, but I ended up getting a contracting position at a very reputable comapany. After 8 months of work I was offered a full time position and a very nice salary. I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity that Rails has given me and also the incredible support I got from railsforum.com, especially Ryan Bates.

These machines are not supposed to replace laptops and they really aren't meant to run off the battery very frequently.

What they are meant for is transporting a VERY powerful machine easily. The reality is that with this machine you have very powerful processing, a very high end lcd screen (you can't even buy a wuxga screen for a desktop), a built in UPS, keyboard and mouse all in one compact package.

I have a Sager 9750 and almost never run it on battey. But I do use it for work as my primary machine where I use Maya, photoshop and eclipse. I need a wuxga screen for my eclipse work, and you simply can't get one for a desktop. When I bring the machine home I can play any game I want as the graphics adapter is very powerful and upgradable.

Finally, I have gentoo running on a second 100gb hd which I use about 50% of the time. The machine does absolutely everything, it's extremely portable and it has features (17" wuxga) that desktops don't. The killer functionality is that I can have my main machine with me where ever I go (as long as there's an ac outlet) and I don't have to make any compromises.

The reality is that Apple is in the business of making money. Why do you think it's so difficult to download quicktime without itunes??? Why are they even packaged together? The answer is that people don't purchase quicktime pro. I'm sure the sales figures are pretty low. People buy music.

Apple doesn't have the luxury making their software being an integral part of the OS (a la microsoft) so they have to find other methods of getting their music store on every pc possibly. This ideology is par for the course. Like I said in my original post, some people embrace this practice and others try to avoid it. Rockbox is a good solution to the problem.

Finally, I never said once that iTunes was a bad program, I just don't care for it's limited codec support and inclusion of the itunes store (which I know can be disabled). I'm allowed to seek an alternative whether apple fan boys like it or not.

I find it humorous being called an OSS zealot simply for stating reasons for why some people may not like itunes. You can't deny that some feel DRM is a burden while others look at it as a feature. And to suggest that OGG is a pirate's tool is insane. Since when is choice a bad thing?

  6. Re:So... on Improve Your iPod with Rockbox · · Score: 1, Informative

Fortunately I was able to mod you down a little as your post is complete flamebait.

Here's the problem... People don't like itunes because it's essentially a gateway to the itunes store. It's purpose is to get you to buy apples's drm laden music from their proprietary service. Some people like it, some don't. Rockbox caters to those who don't. IMO, amaroK is FAR superior to itunes.

I've used rockbox on my iriver h120 since the original builds and it never caused any issues that would void the warranty. It's very easy to remove. Whenever you flash a firmware (which is rare with rockbox, you only flash the bootloader once), you run the risk of bricking the device. The fact that rockbox is located on the harddrive makes updating the firmware VERY secure.

Finally, saying OGG sounds horrid should completely invalidate your whole post. You're completely wrong. Perhaps you don't have sensitive ears and can't tell the difference, but to say it's horrid (assuming you're saying you can differentiate it as lesser quality than mp3, wma, etc. in a blind listening test) is a very ignorant statement.

Rockbox is a godsend for those of use that don't want drm laden music, but do want a wealth of features and codecs.

California aggressively encouraged people to buy hybrids because of their smog issues. Now that that initiative is somewhat successful they are panicking that they might start to loose tax revenue. It's insane. Are they gonna do the same thing if most people decide to stop smoking all of a sudden, like making an oxygen tax?

We already pay tolls and are taxed many ways for our roads. A tax on mileage could be looked at as an infringement on our basic freedom to simply live.
