You may think that spouting populist rhetoric makes you seem clever. Mostly it makes you sound as though you are as simple as the masses it is meant to sway.
And Budweiser is sponsoring the soccer world cup, I don't believe they meant saying that beer is good for playing soccer.
Anyway, I did not meant to sway anybody, I just get a bit pissed when I hear (in Europe) about plans to increase taxes for "bad" food. I can handle it and I do not see why I should pay extra when I indulge myself a McHamburger. I hope I compensated the bad stuff in there by doing multiple sports, not smoking or drinking alcohol.
Should the law really take away all self-responsibility? The next step would be that the government forbids living, because people tend to die from it.
Sorry but I for one NEED high calorie stuff else my weight would go down too much. It is not bad food as long as you do enough to compensate with physical activity. So in my case Mc&Co are doing me a service.
Then again, you could also blame me for increasing my carbon footprint by using up excessive energy when I sport, walk stairs, walk at a brisk rate, in general doing stuff which uses up the most energy. Ever seen how obese people are wonders at energy conservation? Slow body movement with the least amount of acceleration of their limbs. We should send them to Africa to teach the locals how they can save food with efficient body movement.
Anyway, I am now off to apply for financial support to buy food to compensate for my excessive calorie usage, I am sure it is a disease.
Yes that is okay, to help a disabled person walk again. It is okay that the community pays for his medical treatment because we all profit to have a functional member in our community again.
The difference with the "fatties" is that you send them on a treatment for 3 weeks, they do lose 10 kilogram (20 pounds in old currency) and after they get back from their expensive treatment is takes about 3 weeks for them to add those 10 kilos again. (I always marvel how well they can manage their bodyweight, upwards).
Now take the guy who learned to walk again, what are the chances that he will cripple his own legs again with a big metal bar as soon as the doctors are not looking? I would say practically zero, same as the amount of fatties with a thyroid condition. So I have a problem with fatties who choose this life style and expect at the same time that the surrounding community is supporting him/her with that. Think of medical care, special infrastructure, early disabled because of secondary complications, etc.
Just because food is not classified as a drug it doesn't mean you can't say it isn't an addiction. Should we expect the same protections for crack addicts (who chose that life style) when they apply for a job in a kindergarten?
I welcome this change by Amazon. I was getting sick of the sheer amount of titles I "could" buy in the future instead of offering me recommendations of stuff I can have right now.
The car would of course make an online crosscheck to the economic value of the potential targets. And check their medical records in case somebody is terminally ill, you yourself included if a wall is an option too.
I, for one, would start car pooling with lots of small children inside. With a big enough critical mass of children I would even qualify for green lights, just for me!
That said, you can calculate how fast the politicians would add "features" (like with ISPs and mandatory website filtering) which would automatically upload a secret white lists and black lists into your car.
I am guessing here:
White list: Nobel prize winners, The Pope, politicians and multinational CEOs. Black list: The no-fly list from the US.
I wonder if we would be allowed to make a personal priority list for your own car. For example, to take out mimes and lawyers first.
When will common people realize that invading privacy is a crime? Instead there seems to be an acceptance of it being just collateral damage in the war against child porn and terrorists.
Don't come with "if you have nothing to hide you don't need privacy" tantrum because I think privacy is an emotional necessity for the development of a healthy brain. Too bad so much will have been lost before before the general public realizes what has been lost.
What worries me is that the movement sensor in Nest knows when you are at home. It reports this information to the cloud after which Google sells this Big Data to 3rd parties. Now how long will it take that criminal 3rd parties take such a Big Data feed from Google to plan burglaries? Did anybody think of that? Or should we just trust the ethical sense of your Big Data owner of choice?
I wish I could mod the parent up. Really, she was offended because men were men and woman were woman. If they didn't like to be the center of attention they should do their hula hooping exercises at home, with the blinds down, doors closed..... in the basement.
That being said, maybe she had some other more valid issues but it seems that this is a case where she blames the world for her own sensitivities.
Why does China get the job done? - They understand their priorities when the world wants the latest gadgets - Cheap labor - Small kiddy fingers == smaller gadgets - Lost of cheap labor - Factories run at 24/7 which means a more efficient use of factory resources - No workers's union which could jeopardize deadlines.
Currently China is a booming economy (partially because they have lots of cheap labor). Maybe The West has become too elitist in A) Gadget demands and B) Worker rights. Our demand is there, China is just for filling our wishes.
This. Your "inner eye" just has to get used to it. I can remember the first time I saw the original Doom, looking over somebody's shoulder, I got motion sickness within a couple of minutes. Now when I want to play an FPS I know I have to get used to it over a week or so, slowly build up the time I can play before I get sick. I guess a system like the Rift wouldn't be any different. It will never be able to simulate all your senses so you just have to get used to it.
I ignored the iPad argument because an iPad is nice to play with in meetings or on the go but I can't imagine it to replace my desktop, ever. In my experience the only people who think an iPad can replace a desktop are managers who use it to read E-mail but for the the rest do not do any productive work, be it iPad or desktop.
I believe the writer of the article does not consider enterprise items like geo-redundant infrastructure, storage, backup, auditing compliance and enterprise level servers. The majority of the cost is probably generated by slow IT processes to change, acquire and deploy software or features. A lot of meetings and paperwork is often needed and those people need to be paid also. A lot of large organizations do not know the meaning of the word "agile".
I am quite sure if Apple, Google and Samsung are working on developing a flying turd, Microsoft also wants one. I don't see a lot of innovative development lately. These tech giants only want to keep on par with eachother without really developing their own identity. So much for progress.
I'm sorry, but could you please get off your artsy high horse and just see art for what it really is? I would be more impressed if artists would promote the creation of new art to the common people instead of telling them that they need a university degree to understand the bullshit some artists make. I mean, if only a small group of people understand your art you have missed your point. Art should not be an elite thing, it should be something of the common people. To amuse, convey a story or to apreciate the skill of an artist. Modern artists are more like: Provoke, convey some etherial BS which can be read in the appropriate catalog, spit on skill and to earn money. They like to earn money because a 'real' artists don't have a proper job. (Else they can't concentrate fully on the BS they are producing).
To come back to skill, if you listen to an unskilled guitarist just wacking away in random order on his guitar over a high gain amp, do you still appreciate he is trying to express emotion and is not focusing on skill? Buy a CD from him? I thought so.
I've read the same Si-Fi as you but I never assumed the technology used in those books was flawed or covernments were inconsiderate of your privacy. They were always represented as helpful tools which never could be used against you.
And still, I agree with your comment, I'm looking forward to these new developments but would also like better security of the software used and better privacy laws.
So lets assume that on average people have 2 guns at home. With your statistic you are telling me that it is 'okay' that one person should die every year just so that 10.000 gun lovin people can keep their hallowed firearm? Imagine a democratic gathering where you put a poor sob on the stage EVERY YEAR where the crowd chants: "Let him rot in hell, we want to keep our guns!" on which somebody pops a round in his head.
If you restrict this analogy on accidental death by guns it goes slightly in favour of you but the principle is the same: How many people should die just because non-killing people can keep their guns?
I really like to old movies. Not because Mark Hamill is such a great actor, because he isn't.
For me the old Star-Wars is a milestone in science-fiction. It was ahead of its time but most of all I liked the magic behind it. People going outside an hammering on things to get the right sound for lasers. Doing pyrotechnics to get the explosions right. Building computers to get consistant camera movement during stop-motion. People building Millennium Falcons in different sizes. Layering massive amounts of asteroids. So no computer shit but everything hand made by pioneering teams. For me there is the magic from Star-Wars, hand-made by humans.
There is no magic when I had to see Jar-Jar and crome textured space ships. All I had thought of was the fact that there was sitting some bored dude behind some CAD desktop who did the computer animations.
Another milestone was Avatar, a lot of real human work and input, computers used getting it on the screen. Also the first (full) CGI movie creating realistic characters and everything going 3D. Not comparing it to Star-Wars but it was a milestone.
I'm not saying that the new movies should be hand made by the production teams burning their fingers because they forgot the play with fire (although it would have its charm) but it should include the epicness of PEOPLE creating a milestone and not a 13 in a dozen Sci-fi flic.
Can the battle against religion actually be won? There seems to be a human tenancy to believe, no matter how un-rational the ideas be. As if humans are very bad at taking ownership of their own actions and need a proxy to take the blame. If this is true then changing society is not enough, you would have to change the raw DNA to get rid of this mentality.
If this is not possible maybe one could exchange the bigger evil with a lesser one. A new atheist religion where people who want to be led are led. Would you like to be the first supernatural atheist if you promise not to be corrupted by the power instilled in you?:)
The more serious thought behind this idea is that an atheist uses reason and honesty to justify his/her ideas, religion does a brain fuck and exploits weaknesses in ones personality like uncertainty, fear and our ego by suggesting that our lives mean more than just a rash on our planet's surface. It is a difficult fight when your opponent is not playing fair.
It IS immature. I believe that the general public (especially Facebook users) does not develop mentally past the 14 year old stage. Sure, people get "older" (if you cut them in half and count the rings) but that doesn't mean they automatically get "wiser". I think the biggest downside here is that those people like to use their birthdate for a measure of respect they should be receiving.
I was thinking along the same lines. In the near future you will probably be labled a thief if you don't sit out the commercials and zap to other channels. The content delivery program will also offer you a rebate if the camera on top of the TV detects that you are intently watching the commercial breaks..... and smiling.
You may think that spouting populist rhetoric makes you seem clever. Mostly it makes you sound as though you are as simple as the masses it is meant to sway.

Any chance this means Google is going to back-pedal on Google+ ?
Yes: http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/...
Good idea, it works right up to the moment when it is a crime if you use non-government approved encryption methods.
When will common people realize that invading privacy is a crime? Instead there seems to be an acceptance of it being just collateral damage in the war against child porn and terrorists.

Cheap labor will just shift to another poor country, there is still enough of them to choose from. Next up: Made in Africa.
Why does China get the job done?

In their twisted for of reality they could arrest you for "aiding the enemy".
In other news: Don't go to the States, you could get arrested for downloading a song.

Now get off my lawn!
I like fast cars, hot women and a 10Gbit internet connection. Unfortunately my actual buying capacity is lagging behind my ambitions.
But if all those people who "like" something want to share this with me and would chip in, I could be tempted to buy that Lambo.
