My 2008 Liberty has Select-Trac on the fly switchable 4 wheel drive, with a 3.21 gear ratio. No station wagon has that. Will I be climbing the Rubicon trail or doing any rock-crawling? Of course not. But I live in BUFFALO. Where the hell am I gonna get to USE something that can rock-crawl around here? (hint: this is a somewhat flat area. No mountains to climb.)

I need something that can handle Buffalo winters. That means good but not crazy-high ground clearance, and good but not the best off-road ability. I also don't want a full-sized SUV so I can save on gas. The Liberty fits that bill PERFECTLY. Not to mention that the lease terms are great on the Jeeps right now. (Got a 36 month lease on a loaded Liberty Sport for less than $250 a month. A great deal in NY State.) Oh, and the plastic interior and rockers make for easy care and rust resistance, which is important in Buffalo, where we still put SALT on our roads in the winter. (salt+snow+metal = rust. salt+snow+plastic = minor cleaning)

Now, how does ANY of that make my Liberty a "Station Wagon"? Of course, if you're one of those "off road purists" (read: snob) then I don't know what to tell you. Some of us buy a vehicle for practical reasons, and not just as a phallic enhancement.

Wrong. There are several types of people NOT needed in society. Criminals, for example. Most societies work very hard to rid themselves of the criminal element, with varying degrees of success.

Another type would be the Welfare Lazy. We have quite a few of them in America. People who have decided that dependency on the government is their choice of lifestyle. They do a minimal amount of work, and are rewarded for laziness by would-be Robin Hoods using the tax system as a wealth-redistribution vehicle. Meanwhile those that have used their scarce-commodity brains to actually EARN a living are forced to support the leeches of society.

Sorry, but if I earn a buck, it is MINE. If the leeches want to earn a buck, they can go do it themselves. I'm sick and tired of people thinking they are entitled to the contents of my wallet.

After the death of the Dinosaurs and the rise of Mammals we have gone through several Ice and Warm ages, as our planet naturally swings back and forth from one temperature extreme to the other. We are still living within these natural trends, which we puny humans are powerless to stop or alter in any way. Indeed, we are as helpless as the Dinosaurs before the Natural forces at work on our world.

We shouldn't fear the changes, merely work to ensure that our societies and economies are as strong as possible so that we can weather the changes, adapt, and come out stronger than before. This is why I oppose ALL of the proposed "solutions" to the "anthropogenic climate change" hoax. EVERY ONE of them, without exception, leaves us in a weaker position to weather change than if we did not follow them. Yeah. Extortion.

Dunno if you were aware, but the big American oil companies make a roughly 4% profit on their sales of Gasoline. That's it. Roughly 9 cents on every gallon of Gas sold goes to Oil Exec profits. A whole 9 cents.

In case you also wondered, about 15% goes to State and Federal taxes. The rest goes to pay the salaries of the people that work to get the oil out of the ground, to refine it, to transport it to you, to service both you and the station you buy gas at, and to keep the entire process safe under ever-watchful eyes of OSHA and an alphabet soup of other government agencies.

Of course, even these figures don't paint a complete picture. You ALSO have to keep in mind that American oil companies have to compete with other oil companies on the world market. Unfortunately, for the American oil companies, the vast majority of the other world oil companies are nationalized and have a lock on most of their oil. The market is so restricted that a mere 7% of the total world oil production is available on the open market to compete for. That's right, SEVEN PERCENT. ALL the rest of it is locked up by nationalized oil companies and totalitarian governments. So the US can't even TOUCH 93% of the world's oil supply. It's just not available to buy! Now compound that with the fact that America has to import over 80% of her oil to supply daily needs, and every day the weak dollar and increased market pressure from China and other countries drives the cost for crude higher and our ability to buy lower and lower.

Oh yeah, and add to all that the fact that the vast majority of American oil reserves are locked up in areas where drilling is BANNED (ANWR, both East and West coasts, the west coast of Florida, and the High Plains fields.), AND the fact that we haven't built a new refinery in America in nearly 30 years (if not longer) and you will BEGIN to get a picture of the real reasons why gas costs are currently so high, and why they are historically so volatile.

But hey, you just go ahead and keep blaming those Eeeevil Big Oil Execs and their OBSCENE 4% profits! Ignorance like yours must be fucking bliss.

Newsflash: Concrete is manufactured in factories with VERY high quality control standards.

Each batch is specifically formulated to be as identical to the ones before it as possible. While there might me MINOR variances in mix, most of our modern construction absolutely depends on the homogeneousness of the concrete batches. If we really had to deal with widely disparate batches, ntohing large could ever be built, as the overall strength of the finished product could not be counted on. Yes, there are exceptions to this, some of which have caused rather spectacular engineering catastrophes. But the reason they are a big deal is precisely because they are so rare.

Now, if we were still mixing concrete by hand using slave labor like the Romans, then wide variations in concrete batches would be an issue. But we don't. We use complicated mathematics, and specialized weighing and measuring and mixing machines, all tied together by tried and tested computers and software platforms. Concrete hasn't been an issue of "every mixed batch of concrete is different from the last" for at least 50 years, if not longer.

Also, the types of concrete mixed for high-temperature use such as this WOULD be very different than the types mixed for use in bridges.

Concrete used to be my family's business back in the 50's - 70's. I grew up on stories about the concrete business. Not that I would even need that history to understand this though. Don't any of you ever watch the Discovery Channel? Geez.
