C'mon folks, OpenOffice is here and running on the Mac finally. I find that it handles 90% of what I need to do with Microsoft's Office file formats. I wish companies would start seriously considering OpenOffice or StarOffice. I can't see how they could look at the TCO and still balk at using it (even on windows).

I don't get it. In an article ran not too long ago M$ complains about the incompatibility with Apples iTunes with their music service. Then, not surprisingly, they turn around and basically return to monopolistic practices. I know what is going on, M$ knew they were doing this and figured they'd wait until they got slapped on the wrist and then they will fix it. I wonder how many other hidden treasures like this exist.

The key point that many governments are heading toward is to force their technology experts to at least *consider* open source and open standard solutions prior to procurement. In a perfect world that would force some due diligence for a cost effective open-source/open standard solution before possibly wasting money on a closed/proprietary soltuion. The one thing this does bring up is that with this trend, it will be important that more and more of the popular open source initiatives out there start organizing some sort of business plan that offers support because that will often be a deal killer when comparing open vs closed solutions. Also, it was interesting there was no mention of participation in open source projects. Why are government entities engaging in open source initiatives that they start and partnering with other government entities (i.e. between two states). There isn't near enough of that going on.

  7. My conclusion.... on PHP Scales As Well As Java · · Score: 1

Having read a lot of the posts with their information and misinformation on this topic I think it is safe to say that there are idiots on both sides of the fence. A buddy of mine mentioned that maybe someone should implement the infamous pet store application in an attempt to show that PHP can scale to a large degree. That has been the best idea I have heard.

The test of whether PHP can handle enterprise applications has nothing to do with Java. With requirements, the right design and and eye to details (all required regardless of language) you can build a scalable, enterprise level PHP application. Can Java do it better? Could be, can it do it cheaper? On average the cost of a Java application is higher than the same application in PHP. I'm not implying you can't do quality Java implementation on a budget I'm just saying that is the trend I see on a daily basis.

Please don't use the language itself as a security issue. While each language has it set of security concerns, poor design and poor programming account for over 95% of the security issues I have seen. Some languages make it easier to code insecurely but it is still the responsibility of the developer to have a clue.

Hrm, ever heard of PHP-GTK? With it you now have a desktop GUI, ability to write web applications and, if you design your app right, you can get the same level of reuse you get from Java. Again, the EJB, Applets and Compiled Code will always be good arguments against PHP. However, typcially, the price tag for those things is higher. You have to, on a project-by-project basis ask "Is it worth it?"

  11. Re:What's the PHP equivalent to Java NIO? on PHP Scales As Well As Java · · Score: 1

The notion that PHP can't be used in a large project is absolutely ridiculous. Having written some large PHP applications I can attest to that. "Huge requirements"? That's awfully vague. I have a PHP application will over 1500 detail requirements, all of which have been met, all of which were implemented using a PHP MVC implementation all of which are manageable and most of which are easily regression tested. This argument is too much an all or nothing debate. Java does have some scaling advantages over PHP (compiled code, threading and EJB's to name the biggies). Java also, typcially, has a more more significant price tag, higher ramp-up for developers and requires sometimes expensive application server administrators. So, while scaling is the main topic we are on, cost should also be a factor. How much are you willing to pay for your scalability? Being a manager of Java developers and a long time PHP coder I can tell you there is a large middle ground as to when you can use PHP or Java. The question will always be can you make the right decision for the right reasons.

All he would get out of it is "Hey, Forbe tells me that FSF and GPL is bad so we better steer clear". This is the real damange this article does.

For us lower-level tech-heads, we can see through this as the FSF simply enforcing the GPL on companies that think they could fly under the radar.
