Simply showing them Bugzilla does not demonstrate that it is the best solution. You'll need to do your homework and locate other solutions (including some which do run on your company's standard platform) and compare features. If you can find Bugzilla functionality which is important but not present (or not implemented as well) in the others, you may be able to make your case.

As the parent of an almost 2 year old, my first reaction is to feel the tragedy and heartbreak of a poor kid dying this way. Terrible.

Tragically, there have already been 36 kids who've died in the U.S. after being left in hot cars this summer. Similar numbers have been happening since '98 according to this article.

Just because they were playing a computer game, it makes the news. If they were distracted watching TV instead, we would never have heard about it.

As far as I can tell, this is the only one that's involved a computer game. Yet, sadly, it is far from the only one I've heard about. It might just be that it's the only one most /. readers have heard about, and we only read about it here because it does involve a computer game, ya think?

Still, I know there are plenty of us who are reading the magazines in the pediatrician's office and it seems to come up there every summer, right along with the importance of sunscreen and water safety.

Some people are bad parents, and some make one, really, incredibly tragic mistake. Either way, an innocent kid died because of what they did.

Ok, I hate that "this writer is so and so's spiritual heir" thing, but if you really like an author, reading stuff by another person who really likes that author can be a good thing. A lot of good suggestions have been made already, so I'll name two that I haven't seen yet.

If I had to pick someone for Heinlein, I'd say check out John Barnes. A good one to start with is Mother of Storms.

And for a big Zelazny fan, Stephen Brust's Jhereg/Taltos series is excellent. Some of the earlier books have be republished in 3-in-1 editions. His non-Taltos stuff is even better, but it's hard to beat the Taltos books for sheer fun.

In the fantasy world, Robin Hobb's Assassin trilogy is one of the best new fantasy I've read in ages.

Also, Guy Gavriel Kay is INCREDIBLE. Start with the Fionavar Tapestry, then read everything else he's ever done.

    Some other newer folks:
Wilhelmina Baird (start with the clipjoint trilogy)
C.J. Cherryh, esp. Cyteen - though the new Foreigner series is great.
Last, I really liked Tim Powers' Declare.

Check out http://www.fictionwise.com, they have lots of micropayment short stories; great way to check out an author. (US$0.50 for a short story, read it on your PDA...)

    >Also, think about reinstalling Win2k.

Amen to both suggestions, though I'd be more drastic and say wipe & reinstall (or reimage if you're using Ghost).

I have a Celeron 400 and a PII 400 both running NT, 2k, and XP, among other non-MS OS's. When performance on them gets chunky, the quickest way to get them feeling "like new" again is to wipe the partition and reinstall the OS and apps. This works wonders, even on the Celeron which has 128mb. Every time I've had a Windows machine, unless I didn't use it for long periods, I've had to do this AT LEAST once a year (2x/yr is more typical), and it ALWAYS makes a BIG difference in the perceived performance of the computer.

Another tip for quick Windows rejuvenation is to make sure there is plenty of free HD space (20-30%) and run a thorough defrag using Diskeeper, PerfectDisk, etc. Obviously this doesn't help cleaning up the years of accumlated cruft but it is less disruptive to the user, so might be worth it as a first stab.

So I'd say upgrade the RAM to at least 256 - if they're at 256, go to 512 - and reimage the drives. Try this on a sample of your users (including the decision makers) and see if it's sufficient.

Otherwise, I agree with the sentiment that rolling your own sounds nice upfront but doesn't work as well longterm.
