Most people here at slashdot either advocate linux or at least consider it a viable alternative to any propietary closed source OS. Most people here also have a job either working directly with computers, or using them on a day to day basis. Taken these two facts into consideration, Many people are stuck using an OS at work that they are unhappy due to the current propoganda that Microsoft throws around about anything besides Microsoft. It is extremely important, IMO that linux and open-source in general are seen as not only viable alternatives in the corporate world, but as better alternatives.
Like Perl, Java also has a shorthand syntax to define an entire array at once. However, it lacks some of Perl's quirky and powerful array manipulation features, not to mention hashes
I'll admit perl has some pretty damn powerful array maninpulation functions (map, grep, join, etc..). But Java does have 2 standard hash types in the java.util package that are standard with every jdk... (java.util.Hashtable, java.util.HashMap) Although, I do have to admit it's alot easier to use perl's variant..
Bare with me a minute here.. Let me make sure I have the facts straight:
1. A college kid creates napster, and it starts getting some underground attention.
2. Napster gains immense popularity across the world
3. While gaining popularity, literally millions of copyrighted mp3's are being shared between millions of Napster users
4. The RIAA takes notice, and slams a suit on Napster (since they obviously own all copyrighted work that lives on Napster)
5. Napster and Bertelsmann make an alliance. Wouldn't ya know? Bertelsmann is one of the biggest labels behind the RIAA.
6. So, now that Bertelsmann practically owns Napster, and the RIAA has a big-time suit nipin' Napster in the butt, they're turning Napster into RIAAp$ter.
As much as I hate these turns of events, it seems like the RIAA had this planned out all along. Maybe they've had the better of the Napster Community?
When all my friends went and saw the Blair Witch project, and were trying to convince me that it was a true story, and that the movie was true footage. This really did put a more "scary" spin on the movie for my friends.. but oh well.. they were doped by lying marketers, and I shove it in their faces everyday hehe:)
It probably wouldn't be hard to implement a system that keeps track of currently logged on users, getting mostly rid of the "everybody uses 1 ID" problem (You'll still have people loggin on at different times, but this can't be stopped I presume). As for 1 ID at home, 1 ID at work.. this probably wouldn't be needed if their was some sort of "Auto-Logout" feature that logs you out after so much time of inactivity(ala yahoo).
<sarcasm> Maybe we should get 10 karma points for signing up as well.. since that's so treasured here.;)

And this is the first I've heard of this outrageous bill. This seems like Just Another Parent's Overreaction(TM) to his kid seeing porn on the internet. Yes, kids shouldn't be looking at this sort of thing, but no, putting censorware on every computer in Texas sure as hell won't stop that. Dallas is a very tech-savvy industry, and I'm sure this won't pass, (Nortel Networks alone has something in the order of 15,000 employees... imagine their delite in this bill) Maybe this is one time where Corporatocracy could actually help our freedom.
I've been programming for ~5 years (I started when I was 13) Programming is fun, but learning new languages etc. Hasn't been challenging me in the past year or so. There are many things I can't do i.e program kernel drivers, etc.. but I hope to be doing this at the end of the year.
Anyway, My dream has been to design some sort of DSP within my life time, so I chose CE over EE for a few reasons:
EE is a more rounded off Electrical Major. EE will let you design chips and boards, but not just for computers (think specialized devices, consoles, etc..)
CE is more tailored to Computers and embedded devices. CE also covers low-level programming, and hardware implementations of certain software algorithms.
CS wasn't a choice for me.. I think I could learn some programming techniques, but in the long run this keeps me on the higher level of things (still a good major, as it covers many theoretical algorithms and software design)
CE was my choice, because not only do I want to design chips, but I also want to do some low-level coding. It's all a matter of preference

And the Bible is filled with very negative messages; anti-gay, anti-female, anti-other religion, etc. Quake, Doom, Unreal, etc. show a little blood and guts, while the Bible tells you that everyone unlike you is evil and should be punished. Hmmm....
Have you read the bible lately ? One of the biggest messages spoken in the bible is acceptance and love for your fellow man. Your sterotype of christianity as a whole is disgusting. I admit, many of our religious leaders have interpreted the bible to mean these kinds of things, but these are merely interpretations.. please read the bible for yourself and make your own interpretation. But until you do, do not make generalities about a book that has inspired so many to lead good lives and has set a standard for morality that even the leaders of our country confided in.
I recently graduated high school, getting a job in the tech industry is suprisingly easy for anyone that has experience (age and college degree seem to not matter much..). I started programming when I was 13 w/ QBasic and moved on to doing AOL Cracking VB programs when I was 14/15..
After my "destructive teenage" years ended, I started getting interested in C, C++, Perl, and Java.. and nowadays I've been coding solely Java and C++.. It's amazing the amount of experience these older people coming into the industry don't have.. It's really a sad story when you're hailed as one of the best developers at your company (the company I work for has ~100 people), and you're the youngest one there, and don't have a degree. There's a slight contrast though. Everyone here seems to admire my technical skills, but I've never received technical lead on a single project.. it has always gone to the people with more 'seniority' (aka age, not served job time) than I.. I'll admit that my organizational skills aren't the best in the world, but many mission critical tasks are often given to these older people, without even a thought of handing it to me.. I think it's the Project Managers and Corporate Monkeys that only recognize age, and not skill... almost all people that I've met in the in the industry that have an ounce of technical skill judge by actual "skill"..
No need to attack me.. this is what we like to call humour. People laugh at humour. Humour is supposed to "loosen" you up a bit. I think Katz is a very skilled writer/journalist, but this comment was meant for you to cackle at..
There's nothing bad about it. Assuming no conflict of interest in a majority in the House or Senate, this bill should definitely pass
That's precisely the point -- something like this could easily be barried in comittee. Even if it is a favorable bill, remember that most of the corporations that are funding your favorite congressman's next campaign are the same that abuse this power. Don't we all wish we could have congressmen in our pockets..
A large corporation sees that mass conformity and unified services are the way to go!:). Maybe the American government should secretly "unify" with a communist society.. 1.25 billion users, er, people, now that's a big economygovernment!
Aside from the over generalization you give people that are my age (I am 18), I would like to point out a few good qualities my friends and I have:
We have all recently graduated high school, and landed software development jobs in prestigous companies, working full time.
We are ALL currently attending college and plan to get at least a bachelor degree in some varying form of computer engineering / computer science.
We get drunk every[ other] weekend;), and have loads of fun.
The point is, we are very rounded individuals, and have our future in mind. The experience of the tech industry is irreplacable, as is the experience gained by a college degree.
We're young, not stupid.
