  1. Re:Looks useful, but... on DevMaster.net Presents the 3D Engines Database · · Score: 1, Redundant

The geeky "Oooh, ahhh!" value of the screenshots and juicy technical details is probably worth quite a bit to people wo like to read such things, and even to a casual browser interested in gaming, graphics, etc.

I feel like the database could also be useful to modders {not sure about that} and programmers. Modmakers will know what the game engine their working in is capable of {things taht arent neccesarily taken advantage of in the game}, and what they might want to add {sorr yif this is completely off-target, I only make up mods in my head, not in my computer}.

It could give programmers ideas of new ideas to include in their own engine. Also can let them browse engines, maybe for a medium-sized project, where perhaps the owners will not show up just to pitch the engine, only if serious interest is shown.

However, I do agree that you don't really need this on a day-to-day basis, so perhaps it's too much effort for what it's worth.

Oh man, capes! That's awesome. They look good too. City of Heroes sounds like its a really fun MMORPG, I;m glad to see it doing well.

Hopefully the delays in the other games will help them get up to CoH's level {I hear Lineage II kind of sucks, which seems to show in the sales figures}. Kind of like Blizzard, who delays games all the time, but it's in order to make/refine/perfect a superior product.

and yea, what's up with all the 503 errors?

  5. Sounds like a classic ominous foreboding future on Feed · · Score: 1

I mean, we really already are a glutinous, self-absorbed, incredibly selfish and illiterate country anyway. If you don't think corporations control educational materials today, you are sadly naive. This novel sounds not so much like a vision of the future, but a stylized version of today.

Don't you think maybe, just maybe, the author is maybe trying to make a point? That the future described by this book is what will happen to us if we don't change what's going on today {of course the future is stylized compared to today}? Kind of like a large amount of other good sci-fi books {1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, The Giver, lots of PK Dick, etc.}?

also, if your worried about corporate control of text books, etc., I recommend some books.

First, I can't find evidence that Sierra has confirmed using EAX sound. If you could provide that, I'd appreciate it {I am actually interested!}. Second, I didn't mean push the release back very far. HL2's release hasn't even been announced, EAX shouldn't delay DOOM 3 that long.

It's not lazy journalism if he talked to BMG Music representative Rob Anderson and that's what the guy said. I agree with the original response, journalists talk to PR people to get more information. They can read press releases on their own, they don't need them regurgitated.

Sloppy journalism cannot be excused, even if it makes an argument you agree with ...

I totally agree with you here, but you shouldn't assume that things are assumtions, as you seem to imply in your post.

    1) I know that China's black market is bad because I've heard about it in the news. Now you could say this is an example of xenophobic paranoia again. However, china online* talks about black martket problems too. Perhaps these countries [are] named to increase xenophobic paranoia, but you should support your point when you imply it is true. Maybe show that there are examples of black markets in the US. Support instead of stating blindly. For example:

    2) Why** not? If they can, then they will, at least some of them. One possible reason is that the bootlegger was set up more recently than the legit distributor and so got the best stuff on the market, better than was avaliable to the legit guy, who hasnt been able to upgrade yet. I don't know if this is true, but at least I'm making a theoretically possible arguement.

ok, enough. My point is support arguements you make well, don't troll, and try not to make assumptions.

*this seems to be based in Chicago, kinda weird, but it is "for china" and all its articles focus on china, so I would argue that it is not xenophobic {towards china, at least}.

  18. Used equivalence to not selling on Buy Second-Hand Games, Stifle Creativity? · · Score: 3, Insightful

It is true that when someone buys a used game, the game company sees no money, but they saw money when the game was originally sold. Someone had to not like the game enough to sell it back so that it could appear on the used market. So the effect of the game appearing not to sell is partially true, the original owner would rather sie had not purchased the game. This means out of the 2 buyers of the game, only one would buy it if given a second chance. The company only receives one buyers money. This is fair {unlike the ridiculous markups on used games!}.

    If people are selling games after playing through them, it is usually long enough after the release that these purchases would not affect the company's income very much. {Another case is that the game has little-no replay value, and here the company is paying for it.}

On the other hand, the author of the article makes good points and I do agree with him about supporting the companies {or local bands!} that one likes. Also, much of his arguements are about console games, which i feel have a larger used market than PC games {and I am almost entirely a PC gamer}.
