Because it is not a replacement for real brushing. Everyone does not creep through the jungles/deserts of the world fighting "evil." What this gum is supposed to do is to provide a better alternative to not brushing at all. As a student of the dental arts, my guess is that they are using triclosan in the gum formulation. Triclosan is an antibacterial agent currently found in colgate total toothpaste that is more effective at killing the streptococcus mutans strain of bacteria that is responsible for caries. This ingredient, along with the physical motion of chewing the gum which removes some of plaque, is defintely better than not brushing. But when it comes down to it, their is no good substitute for the scrubbing power of a good brushing and the cleansing action of using floss between the teeth.

Would something like this make a good mythtv box with an added external tv-tuner? Perhaps a cheapo linux desktop with a free pci slot? One reason I'm stickin to xbox Media Player is the fact that it built for a specific platform and therefore "works well." I don't have time to learn a whole new operating system's intracacies so something with a preinstalled linux like this would be interesting because it would cut the installation hassle out.

Root canals are performed (usually) due to bacterial invasion of the dental pulp by bacteria you see in what a layman may call a cavity (caries). Your pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue, various other stuff. As the pulp chamber is a rigid chamber with no room for the inflammatory process, a constant bacterial invasion results in death (necrosis) of the tissue in the pulp. A root canal procedure is one in which a dentist or endodontist ATTEMPTS to remove all pulp within the tooth to prevent pain and, more importantly, a spread of infection to the rest of the oro-facial complex. If you leave a significant amount of pulp on the inside of the tooth two things can happen. The infection will continue and spread to the bone, or the tooth will discolor from the dead tissue hangin around the inside of the tooth. Therefore, no, you shouldn't get a discolored tooth from a properly administered root canal treatment.

As a student of microsurgery (currently a second year dental student), where measurements and movements of tenths of millimeters are routinely made, I can tell you that video games don't seem to be a great predictor of a successful dental student. What seems to really make a great difference are the people who are artists of some kind. I think it comes from the fact that games tend to be more "trigger-response" exercises as opposed to more dynamic activities such as picking up a pen or brush and creating something. Although, I can't say that the video games hurt anyone... except for the people who stay up all night playing halo.

How about this... how would any civilian even know they're violating the GPL? Access to these computers would presumably pretty tight. Just something to ponder over...
